Nate had already gotten a late start on the day, so carrying the worm, the boiler, and the burner down the hill this late was not part of the plan. Luckily, he had hauled the starter down earlier in the week and buried it in the ground to cool before now. He knew that right now he would not be able to get started today, not now, but he could get things set up and ready for the move tomorrow. It was a small run this go around, but still the 100 gallon tub was a haul down the hill. He had just placed everything down in the little clearing beside the stream and he had enough time to sit and catch his breath for a second before he would start digging. Moonshining, or the act of making one's own liquor, is something that has ran in the Harlan family for years, but it has also been highly illegal since the beginning as well. Making your own alcohol or liquor without a license from the state is highly illegal as the law reads: No person shall keep, store, or have in his possession any still or distilling apparatus for the purpose of distilling alcohol without a permit from the Board. Any person convicted of a violation of this section shall be guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $2500 and up to one year in prison if committed in a public place. But, the money that could be made was well worth the possibility of arrest and fines. Nate knew that he could easily keep hidden here, no one came up on this small mountain in Virginia. The road, which divereted from an ATV/4-wheeler path along the mountain side, stopped about 500 yards before he would take an immediate right at an old oak tree and go down here to a natural spring and stream that he would use to help make the liquor and cool his equipment. He started the long process of pushing into the side of the hill next to the stream.

Emily hates this place.. it had only been three days, but she had already decided it. Every single store was small, there were no shopping malls, there was no library, you needed a car to even do your groceries. And to top it all off the small house that she had rented was filthy and old. It had taken her two days just to clean up the place enough to feel like she could even live there. So now that she got that done, it was time to start doing what she actually had came here to do, to study the wolves that lived in the forest that surrounded the small town. She packed her back with all her notebooks, vials and other things that she would need for her research and put on her best hiking shoes and set off. She had even brought a tent in case she found something interesting and wanted to camp out. She was excited for it! Finally she would get to observe wolves in their natural environment and it was said that they were a plenty around here. She took her car to the edge of the wood and then started to track her way into the wood and up the hill. The forest was densely grown, but she was an experiences hiking and did not have that much trouble finding a path that she could follow up. Along the way she made sure to keep an eye out for markings of the wolves. Wether it was feces or scratch marks at the bark. For the first time since she came to that town, she actually felt somewhat happy. @Jake

Nate had just finished moving everything into place, he was slowly beginning to make a still sized hole in the dirt beside of the stream, being very careful not to knock off the natural pattern of the stream as that could ruin the whole spot. Placing the drum, the condenser, the worm, and all the other equipment together, he would begin mapping out in his head where everything would need to go. As he took a break, finding an old stump that was going to be near the still site, he begin to look into areas where he would be making his camp. Plotting a tent location, camp fire, what food he would eat, everything along those lines. He had just placed his lunchbox against the stump, pulling out a water bottle from the ice filled chest of snacks and drinks, he took a sip, but he was startled when he heard a rattling of branches near him. It was not uncommon for deer, raccoons, possums, wolves, or even bear to frequent this area. He scanned his surrounding, especially in the direction the noise had came from, slowly moving to a standing spot and bringing his hand behind his back. Tucked into the waist band of his blue jeans was a .9mm Glock pistol, something he had bought for self defense. It wouldn't take down a bear, but it sure as hell would scare it off. However, it wasn't animals that he was scared of seeing right now. In the state, a concealed carry license allowed you to carry a weapon of this type, but if this happened to a liquor revenue lawman, they wouldn't care and would charge him with a illegal weapon charge as well, but he wasn't going to get ate by no bear either. He held the gun at his side, concealed against his body as he looked through the woods, waiting for the sound. Another branch breaking, another rassling, he could hear whatever it was getting close. As he hid behind a larger tree trunk, he watched as, not a bear or even officer of the law, but a girl, naturally stunning in beauty, was just walking through the woods, looking for... something?

She had been spending the entire day in the woods and she had been loving it. She had already found some signs of wolf live in the forest and had been collecting samples here and there. Her backpack was full with things that she had found and she had taken pictures of other things with her phone. It was already starting to get late when she had started to hike back to where she had entered the forest. By then she was covered in streaks from all the branches that had whipped against her and her shoes were covered in dirt, mud and leaves. She was starting to get tired, but she was kind of determined to make it back to her car. That was until suddenly saw something between the trees and branches ahead of her. Some bits of color that didn’t seem to belong in the forest. She walked closer to it till it became more clear what she was looking at. There were all kind off things there. A drum and a condenser and some other things that he did not even recognize. “What the..” She said quietly to herself as she kept pressing closer. @Jake

Nate had watched from a far for the entire trip through the woods once he saw her, he watched her as she was looking and examining small pieces of the woods. He tried to figure out what she was doing, but he couldn't gather. Was she just on a hike? A nature walk? Looking for something? Putting the gun back into the waistband of his pants, he would watch and she neared closer and closer to the still site, but he would just pray she would move on so he would not have to say anything or... do anything. However, he would not be so lucky as she would see the still through the trees. She would slowly approach the still with a confusion on her face, but he didn't say anything until she was right on top of the still's area. "Not normal to see people out this far," he would say with a bit of boom in his voice as he would slowly come out from behind the trees he was hiding behind, his six foot, four inch frame becoming full visible, "You lost or anywhere you need directions too?"

She jumped big time when there was suddenly a voice beside her. In fact she jumped so much that her foot got caught and she just tumbled over, falling over in the shallow bit of the river. “Fuck!” She said instantly, now drenched, her pants sticking to her and so did her shirt. She crawled up to her feet quickly again but it had not helped that much. As she got up and shook off the water from her arm she looked his way, seeing him standing there y the trees. He was tall, way taller then she was and buff as well. Her reminded her of those gym jocks that would always be admiring themselves in the mirrors. “Well.. I didn’t exactly expect to see anyone either.” She grumbled softly as she tried to wipe herself dry, but there was no getting to it. She groaned more audibly. “And no, I don’t need directions. I am fine. Just making my way back.” @Jake

As she would jump, trip, and fall into the stream next to the moonshine still, he couldn't help but a smirk, but he would apologize, "I am sorry, I didn't mean to make you jump," he said as he would put on his best poker face, "I didn't mean to make you jump..." He would walk forward, closing the distance between the two of them as he would slowly reach out his hand to greet her, "Hi, I am Nate," he said with a smile as he would look to shake her hand, "I am actually a local..." His comment might have felt random in the moment, but he definitely did notice the accent in her voice and she was not from around her, it was almost apparent, but she could surprise him. She looked like she had not been having a good day so far and this was not adding to it. He reached down to a large gym back that sat beside of his cooler, pulling a towel out of the bag and handing it over to her.

She couldn’t help but look at him with slight suspicion written on her face. He was here in the middle of the woods, around all this equipment. What was she supposed to think about him? What was he even doing here? She looked around herself again once more, seeing everything there. This was not just a simple camping trip.. But never the less she did give him a hand. “My name is Emily.” She said, figuring there was no harm in telling him her name. Just like everyone around this place his accent was thick and sometimes hard to understand. She even had to take a second to figure out he was saying he was a local. “Well, I am not. But it seems I am stuck here for a little bit.” She grumbled and she didn’t mean the forest. As he handed her a towel she happily took it and started to dry herself off. It absorbed some of the water from the river and she knew that soon she would be dried off by the slight breeze that was there. She looked up to the sky seeing it was already started to get dark. “I wonder if I can still make it back..” @Jake

He would look up at the sky with her before turning to his Apple Watch that he wore, seeing the clock showing 5:45pm, "I don't see why not," he said with a smile, "The ATV trail is right up the hill and heads to the main road." While she did take an interest in his equipment, she didn't see to know what it was... or would she have said anything if she did? He looked her over as she turned around looking up the hill, she was attractive, he couldn't place her accent, but it definitely wasn't the thick mountain accent that he had come accustomed to around her. He would slowly begin to drag a tarp out of the small toolbox to the side of the site before beginning to move it over the top of the still trying to conceal it, "I am actually getting ready to head out as well, if you want company on the way out..."

She couldn't help but look at him with supicion as he started to cover everything that he had put out here. Her eyes narrowing a bit. What was he doing here? It wasn't like any of that stuff could not get wet by the rain. Neither would animals take interest in it. "What about your stuff?" She asked him then. Was he just going to leave it here? She couldn't help but feel weird about it. "Why is it even here? What is it for...?" She asked. Being slightly curious. @Jake

"Ah, I am leaving this stuff here," he said with a smile, but his mind was screaming at him, she was getting curious now, this is definitely not good, "Don't worry about all that, call it a science experiment..." He smiled at her as he would take the camouflaged colored tarp and make sure that everything was covered. He couldn't have any one stumbling across this and finding his still. It wouldn't be a good time for him, especially if it as an alcohol enforcement or someone else looking for a moonshine still. But, as the sun was going down, he knew this was not the place to be. It was dangerous as wolves were known to roam the area and they would find his still to be quite a treat. At least during the day, he would have a better chance to defend himself. "If you want, my truck is parked up the hill here, I can give you a ride to wherever your car is," he said as he would drive a few stacks into the tarp covers hole openings, securing it to the ground, "Would be very dangerous to travel around her after sunset, the wolves and bears get bad."

She was still very suspicious of him. Especially since he didn’t seem to be answering her straight. She was still padding herself dry and slowly she was starting to feel somewhat alright again. Her big backpack was still on her back and was packing full with stuff as well. But she would be happy to tell him why they were there. For research into wolves, that was not a secret. As he suddenly offered to drive her back with his truck she couldn’t help but scoff at him softly. “Yeah.. Let me just get in a truck with a stranger who won’t tell me why is hiding his equipment in the middle of the fucking woods.” She said to him with her arms crossed. Yet it did dawn on her how close it was to the sun going down and he was right.. She had seen plenty of evidence that there were animals here. “Just know I have ways to protect myself.” She then said as she pointed a finger at him. @Jake

As she scowled him for offering a ride, he would smirk back at her, just staring as she finished her rant and then pointed a finger at him, "I am sure you do," he said with a smile, as he would begin to pick up his items that he was taking with him, a backpack, a cooler, a gym bag full of clothes, just in case, he was taking no chances this go around. He smiled as he began to walk up the hill side leaving her standing in the middle of the woods as he spoke again, "Truck is up here, if you wanna ride the bed of the truck is open, if not, a bid ye a dew!" His southern delict absolutely butchering the final saying as he would slowly begin gather space between the two of them, but stopping and turning when he could tell he was out of sight. If she had continued to follow him, he would stop and let her catch up. If she stuck around, he would watch her again, judging her movements to see what she was doing out in the woods. He could have easily answered her, but it seemed like that conversation would not have gone as well.

As he suddenly walked off she was just left behind stunned. Was he just leaving her here? With all this strange stuff that had been poorly hidden under the tarp. She couldn’t help but scoff. Fucking southerners.. She had always learned that they were hospital folk, but really they were rude! She hated his place! Absolutely hated it! Yet the darkness was starting to stretch across the horizon and as she tapped her foot for a few moments she decided that perhaps his offer was her safest way out. “Wait up!” He yelled after him and would start to climb that hill as well. She didn’t like the smile that came to his face as he noticed her catching up. Smug bastard.. “Just to my car, it is parked at the southern entrance of the woods.” She said to him, once more pointing a finger before climbing into the bed of the truck. She had never ridden in a car this way, but she was sure as well not getting in the front with him. @Jake

He would begin walking up the hill when he heard her say wait up and she started climbing the same path that he did. He would smile down at her as she began up the path, just to the car and southern entrance of the woods she would say, he would just nod and grunt his approval as he would finally see his old truck sitting off the side of the little trail that went off the side of the ATV trail. He would throw his bag, cooler, and toolbox in the passenger seat of the ride since she was going to sit in the back of the truck instead of the front. He would go across to the drive side of his car and move to open the door. He would lean over the side of the bed of the truck and watch as she would follow behind him, "Southern entrance?" he would confirm, "Near the river opening?"
