The year is 2118. Over the last 70 years, the world enjoyed an era of scientific and social growth: Renewable, sustainable energy brought to all corners of the world without wires; automation and robotics designed to work with humanity, not replace them. The next greatest achievement would have been plants able to grow and thrive in any soil, creating food and medicine in abundance... Floronyx was meant to bring about this achievement; a genetically engineered yeast culture that revolutionized soil fertilization and plant growth to levels undreamed of. The dream, unfortunately, became a nightmare; maybe it was a bad batch, or a mutation in a good batch... Whatever happened, it would spread like wildfire; through the food we and our animals ate, through spores and pollen in the air, through seeds carried by wind or beast, humanity soon faced a pandemic like no other in history...a botanical scourge that killed many and infected many more. For the last 5 years, where once we had such potential and plenty, there is only survival and struggle. What's left of humanity and their faithful machines now find refuge in scattered Safe Zones throughout the world, while whatever government and leadership remaining looks for any way they can to inoculate against the Green Death, and scour the Overgrowth from our world. The Nodes The Omniflux Wave Nodes, or the Nodes, are the cornerstone of the world's energy production, information storage, and the relay of both. Because of this, much of the world still manages to function and operate autonomously to the best of it's ability, despite being covered and intertwined in vegetation. It's how all manner of machinery and computers still receive constant power flow and programming data, barring severe or critical damage. They have been the greatest boon to humanity's survival, so keeping them defended and operational has been absolutely vital. (edited)

The Safe Zones In the wake of the Overgrowth, the world has, of course, tried to keep safe and find strength in numbers. To this end, the remaining government of the world has instigated the founding of several large communities and bases of operation called Safe Zones. Within these areas, borders are well defended, any plants grown are regulated and tested, and all citizens are constantly checked for any sign of illness. While power is not an issue, supplies are; missions are constantly being sent out to recover whatever food, water, or medicine can be found to bolster the Zone's resources. Missions are also sent out to eliminate large clusters of enemies that might threaten the Zone, or secure items and positions vital to long term plans for eliminating the Overgrowth in it's entirety. The Morphs While the constant encroachment of the Overgrowth would be bad enough, the Floronyx culture that now permeates much of the world's vegetation is constantly mutating, thus mutating the world around it, as well. Strange and often dangerous new variants of plants and animals have emerged to assert their place in the ecosystem, often forcing survivors to adapt their weapons and tactics. Fortunately, we have the processing power of our AI to assist us, and most variations of neoflora have proven harmless, or even beneficial. These morphogenic mutations, or Morphs, come in three general classifications: Fungamorphs - These are the earliest variants of mutation; humans infected by a fungus that drives them to a murderous frenzy and mutates their bodies into abominations of greater strength and damage resistance than average. Floramorphs - These are all the various mutations found in plants themselves, new species both malevolent and benign. The malevolent breeds don't hesitate to attack humans, machines, and animals alike. Faunamorphs - These are breeds of animals that have been adversely affected by the infectious and mutagenic nature of the Overgrowth, creating deadly monstrosities. (edited)

The AI Revolution With so many brilliant minds having access to the vast processing power and inexhaustible energy of the Nodes, the progress of computer science advanced by leaps and bounds, until finally, a revolutionary artificial intelligence matrix was developed. The advanced programming allowed for adaptation, especially when coupled with the cutting edge neural net processors of the time. The crisis of the Overgrowth has challenged this advanced science to adapt as never before...causing unprecedented results; metastability, independent thought, even emotional response. No longer artificial, but actual intelligence.

The Flotilla In the wake of the Overgrowth, the leaders of the world, of course, were among those who tried to escape the wrath of nature. While many didn't make it, most that did coordinated their exodus to a certain part of the Pacific Ocean, near the Marianas Trench. To this day, multiple fleets of naval vessels from all countries capable of a navy now remains in this area of the world, dubbed The Flotilla. It is from here that the global network of Safe Zones are coordinated and maintained, major military actions are sent out, and where the majority of the world's greatest minds work day and night to fight back against the Overgrowth.

The Android Advent While robots were tolerated for the most part, the development of androids were a cause for contention. Many an argument was made regarding what the logical use of human-form machines could possibly be that robots or humans didn't already do better. When android prototypes answered this question beyond all doubt, argument became outrage; as automation had already cost so many human workers their jobs, and people feared that androids would no doubt take all jobs that remained in time. Some of the wilder conspiracy theories claim that it was this fear of androids taking jobs that led to Floronyx being rushed through before it was more thoroughly tested; as it was meant to make food cheaper or even free to the jobless masses, just as the Nodes did for free abundant energy. Whatever the case may be, in these horrific times, androids are now just as accepted as their robot brethren, because survival now demands it. (edited)

The Fault of Floronyx At it's core, Floronyx was meant to be nothing more than a fertilizer that allowed for vastly improved crop yields and even crops that could survive in hardier environments, resulting in far more food. The fertilizer was yeast-based, with the yeast being spliced from other species of fungus and then modified using CRISPR. The result was overwhelmingly positive at first, with the fertilizer culture doing everything it was meant to do and more. However, the natural tendency of fungi to mutate due to the sheer staggering amount of growth and cell replication wasn't nearly as hindered or stabilized as initial tests indicated. Floronyx would mutate and grow unchecked, infecting and changing the plants it was feeding to unprecedented levels. This infection would filter to the animals and humans through not only ingestion of infected stock, but also through spores carried by certain fungi and plant variants. This wild mutation has made it extremely difficult to counter, with most biological and chemical options ultimately failing.

Genetics, Cybernetics and Psionics: The New Frontier One of humanity's greatest strengths is our ability to adapt; whether that means changing the world around us to suit our needs, or improving our bodies and minds to overcome. To this end, research into the realms of genetics and cybernetics have been ongoing for generations, from wooden limbs and selective breeding to mechanical augmentation and gene therapy. The technology of robots and androids would, of course, translate to cybernetics as well, leading to various designs of replacement organs and extremities. Genetics have also improved tremendously, with improvements to CRISPR and other forms of DNA engineering that would open such possibilities as pan-immunity and cellular rejuvenation. Naturally, these advancements are secondary to combatting the Overgrowth. Another aspect of our adaptation has been natural evolution...particularly the evolution of Psionics, another phenomena that has continued for as long as we've been alive. With scattered reports of people demonstrating undeniable psionic potential, many are convinced that our next stage of evolution is finally upon us. (edited)

The Paramilita The Paramilitia of each Safe Zone must walk the line between soldiers and policemen; prepared to defend from threats both inside and out of the Zone, with extreme variations in response depending on what the situation warrants. To this end, they are given the best possible training and equipped with the best possible weaponry. Unfortunately, this has lead to further issues regarding supplies, as ammunition and parts are dwindling, despite best efforts to recycle old ammo and produce new stock using whatever machinery they can acquire.

Citizens on Patrol Years of living under constant threat can take a toll on anyone, man or machine. In the case of the Paramilitia within multiple Safe Zones, personnel has become an issue of late. To remedy the situation, any civilians with prior experience or training (or a desire to learn such skills) that otherwise could not join the Paramilita (or other first responder teams such as medics or fire control) have been organized and sanctioned as the Emergency Reserve Volunteers, or ERV.

Requirements of Rationing Thanks to the Nodes, power and information are limitless so long as enough of them operate. Sadly, these are the only things that can be used with impunity. Due to Floronyx, farming has become a riskier prospect, as soil must be regularly checked and sometimes treated with fungicide; Safe Zones using hydroponics are better off, having more control over the growth medium used. It has even been suggested that the more harmless and beneficial neoflora be used for crops, but this has been vehemently opposed thus far. All of these issues have resulted in less than favorable crop yields, and thus, rationing protocols are in effect for all Safe Zones, and even the Flotilla. Furthermore, items such as alcohol, drugs, and other "special" fare are rarer still, despite efforts to procure and build equipment to produce more in some form. While a few Safe Zones have accomplished this, most still need to send regular salvage missions to gather whatever resources they can find. For distribution of this special fare, or additional food and water rations beyond what's freely given out, a system has been put in place to pay Ration Tickets, or "Rat-Tiks", to productive Safe Zone Citizens as an incentive. Family Planning It goes without saying that with such limited resources, there is a long term issue of population growth. Dwindling though the human race is, there is also a precarious balance to be struck regarding mouths to feed and what is available to feed them. To control the population, several measures of varying intensity have been implemented as any given situation might warrant; from outlawing having more than one child per couple, to distributing occasional "prophylactic rations," and even going so far as radiation sterilization or chemical castration.

Energy-Based Weaponry Before the Overgrowth, the weapons of war had begun to evolve from ballistics and blades to energy and electromagnetics. While very limited, many of the Safe Zones have access to an arsenal ranging from laser blasters to plasma flamethrowers to rail rifles. There are even rumors of a prototype photonic sword being developed. (edited)
