The beeping of his machine went off earlier than he had expected or he had dozed off, he wasn’t exactly sure. He was pouring himself a nice hot mug of coffee when he heard giggling from out front. It brought a smile to his face as he knew it was the sound of children playing, but when he made his way to the living room to look out the window, he was surprised to see Harper playing with the kids. It deepened his smile a bit to see nearly the whole block outside with one another. For a moment, he thought about joining them, but he simply had too much to do. He turned on the lights in the living room and sat his coffee on an end table that wasn’t in its rightful spot yet. He had the big items like the couch, the entertainment stand and the bookshelf in its designated spot already, but there were still so many boxes to go through.
He opened all of the boxes and sorted them by where they needed to go in the living room; movies with the entertainment stand along with gaming consoles, books and little figurines with the bookshelf and anything that needed to go on the walls were pushed against one. When he was done, he heard the giggling still happening in the street and decided he could return the favor to Harper. He grabbed his coat and slipped on his boots as he left the warmth of his house and made his way out into the shin-high snow, straight to Harper.
“Harper? Hey! I just wanted to return the favor from yesterday. If you’d like a warm drink, I just made coffee.”
He smiled warmly as he cross his arms, not properly bundling up since he was just making a quick run outside. His sweet offer was foiled however when a snowball came hurling into his back just below his coat collar, causing snow to melt down his shirt. His mouth fell open in whimsical shock as he turned to see the same boy who had been playing with Harper.
“I—I’m s-sorry, Mister.”
Jacob chuckled to himself as he shook the snow off his back a bit, kneeling down to gather some snow himself.
