The memory wipe was complete. The prototype data scrubbed. The android body was a blank slate. It and the charging pod was loaded into a bin to be destroyed. Harper Ferris, the creator of the S.O. units called for a disposal team of her prototype. “Make sure it’s done tonight.” She told the men who came for the bin. The cart rolled down the hall while the men chattered about their day-to-day. They push the defective prototype into the waste department. The bell for a lunch break sounded and the men, locking the door behind him, left the prototype behind to be destroyed later. The android sat in its default setting as a male due to Harper preferring that gender. His blonde hair curls around his features as his blue eyes stared blankly. He looked like a dead man or a lifelike doll. (edited)

Eddie had been planning this 'heist' for months now. He called it a heist, but it was really just a breaking and entering job and stealing an android doll, leaving with it off the planet before he could get caught with stolen equipment from a major corporation. He had planned on quitting and going back home, but he wanted an android... And paying $30,000 dollars for one when he saw thousands of them being destroyed everyday, he couldn't justify that. He watched the cameras at the security desk and began his plans. He placed a flash drive into the base of the computer. With a couple of clicks, he could see a video he recorded from the previous day beginning and he would use the command prompt to change the location of the video recording of the cameras, turning them off and changing the recording to the video that he made. He stood from the security desk and began to walk to the back room of the waste department. As he did, he looked through the door, yes, one was there. He slowly turned the key, praying that his video was still recording. He carefully, just as rehearsed, took one of the lab coats and slide it over his shoulders as he moved the android to the cart. Slowly moving to the door, he was able to sneak it out the door and to the side door of the security desk with no one in sight since it was lunch time and to his car awaiting on the side of the building. It was odd how they got these cars to work almost identically to the ones on Earth, but he didn't question it, because they were going back. He slowly placed his new android in the back seat, covering it was a blanket and shut the door. He took his security uniform off and stood there for a second in basketball shorts he wore underneath and a t-shirt, throwing the uniform back inside and grabbing the hard drive before he was on the road to his apartment.

It was a couple hours after the lunch break when the theft was discovered. The men tasked with destroying the android were fired, but it would take some time before the identity of culprit would be found. It was a big facility, after all, with lots of people working to keep it running. Mars had become a industrial metropolis welcoming craftsmen, inventors, engineers, technicians. The towns were a mixture of humans and their robotic companions, a far cry from the new Synthetic Organism units. The S.O. models were a perfect artificial human. One that could be set to look and act however the human it was imprinted to for life. Of course there we safety protocols put in place to prevent androids from committing crimes or enabling their owner to break the law. And the best part: they were made out of recycled materials. The only outward difference was a port located at the base of the S.O. spine where they connected to their pod. This charged them and stored their memory and provided updates. Without it, the androids might as well just be dolls. The stolen companion slumped to its side when the car hit a bump. It was mostly naked aside from a pair of boxer briefs. It’s charging port was at the back of his neck and the pod was bigger. In fact, it extended out from it’s backpack size. The unit could rest inside the pod during the long update process.

Once he finally made it back to his apartment, he looked over the red tint of the dirt that surrounded the parking lot, trying to see if anyone was coming or going. After making sure the coast was clear, he made his way to the backseat where he slide the android out from behind the blanket on slowly over his shoulder. He struggled for a moment, but the android was lighter than most humans he had attempted to carry before, which was not many. He would struggle to throw the body over his shoulder and begin walking to the building, praising the wonders that be that he had a first floor room at the apartment building. As he would unlock the door and walk in, he would see his computer setup ready for the android. He had been planning this for weeks and was more than ready to started on working on this android. He smiled as he walked over, standing the android upright and looking at the plug on the back of the pod. That is the first issue he would find, "USB-A!?" he would exclaim with frustration, "Who still uses that and that is not normal!?" He would leave the android alone in the room before running off and digging into a closet that was full of old wires and junk, that had been packed away for the move, but he found an old cord before moving back to the android and plugging it in before plugging into his computer. It was there that he seen the first signs of life from the computer and the android as he would begin moving the pirated updates from a dark web source to the android. It would take a little while, so he walked to the kitchen to grab a drink while he waited.

Life slowly appeared in the android’s eyes as it charged and powered on. The AI ran through a checklist of the different functions as they came available after loading. Finally, the head tilted up and the android looked straight ahead, expressionless aside from a smile. “Hello, thank you for purchasing your Synthetic Organism companion. I am Model Number 1. My default name is SO1. Please feel free to change this to a name of your choosing after you’ve finished the registration process on my Pod. To do this, simply place your hand on the scanner and state your name and purchase code. After that process is complete, you will be free to unlock my settings and make the changes you want to my personality and looks. I look forward to being your companion for the rest of your life. For faster charging and recent updates, please place me inside my Pod.” The android waited a beat then repeated the startup recording. The Pod beeped and the scanner and screen lit up.

As he returned with his drink, he fiddled on stuff with the computer before he finally seen the Android boot up. With a generic voice, tone, facial features of many demos he had seen made in the factory, he smiled as it was familiar. He pulled an old .txt file from the computer and began to read it, moving to the panel on the side of the large pod behind the android. "Name, Eddie Monarch... purchase code, 010101234010101," the code was received from a leaked document from the company, an adminstrator password that would work with most, if not all, of the Synthetic Organism companions, "And submit..." As he submitted, he watched the android for more information on what was next...

It took a minute for the information to process. Then the android smiled and looked at its new owner. “Hello, Eddie Monarch. I am SO1 please select the name you wish to give me and what you would like me to call you.” It was still using the generic voice, but the expressions were being displayed as the android looked at its owner for the first time. It took in data, learning everything physical thing about Eddie as it could. “It appeared your body is lacking nourishment. If you wait 38 more minutes, I will be charged enough to make you a meal.”

He slowly thought for a moment as he couldn't say outloud his thoughts as he normally would, but he looks over at the android, "Sol..." He said as he look at the android and it said he was lacking nourishment, "That is okay, I would like to initiate first time setup and customization."

Sol blinked and then smiled. “Very well, Eddie Monarch. For physical customizations, please selection a male or female. You can also change my voice, hair color/style, skin color, eye color, my height, and my proportions.” It listed. “Warning, it appears some of my customization options are unavailable.” The android said with a confused frown.

Eddie looked up at her from the computer desk, "Options unavailable," he said with a confused smile, "What options are unavailable?" He looked through the patch notes of the pirated software that he secured. Nothing in the notes indicated anything about missing features that would come with newer models, and this was a newer model, right? He was sure of it?

Sol blinked as it processed the question. “The height and proportion changes are unavailable.” It replied. “You can change my gender, hair color/style, voice, eye color, and skin color. Would you like to start with gender changes?” After a moment, Sol spoke again. “Note: once you have finalized your changes my gender, height, or skin color will be unavailable for future changes. So please be sure you’re happy with your selection.”

"Okay...?" he said almost questioning, in the notes for the model on the companies official website, it stated that customization was available for the models whenever, this must be why they were throwing this model out, couldn't adapt more than once, "Sol, please list your current height for me..."

“My default height for my male settings is 5’9”. For my female settings, it is only 5’4”. I hope these settings are acceptable. Would you like to choose my gender?” Sol replied with an apologetic expression also it’s eyes were completely blank.

"Yes," he said as he looked down at the settings on the computer, "Female android setting, please." He looked over the paperwork on the computer as he let the android work itself out as he waited for the next comment or question.

Sol’s hair grew longer as its height shrank and its features grew softer. Soon a blue eyed, blonde beauty was sitting in the male android’s place. “Thank you for selecting my gender. Would you like to change my voice?” She asked softly.

Eddie had seen several dozen videos of this transformation online and through YouTube videos, but seeing it in person was something that he couldn't believe. It was almost magical the way that her hair grew and her body shrunk right before his eyes in a matter of seconds. "Give me the voice options, please?" He would ask as he look over the features of the android.

Sol ran through several different options for her voice including a few celebrity choices. After the first first dozen, an air of almost boredom seeped into the android’s samples. Though her personality setting hadn’t been set yet. Finally, she was done with the 30th sample and returned to her default voice. “Did you like any of those options, Eddie Monarch?” She asked with the smallest hint of sass.

He noticed a hint of sarcasm, boredom, and sass... Was the android new? Did she have emotions? What was that? "Uh, go ahead and go with voice 13," Nothing a cuter voice that had an air of airheadedness with it, "Submit and go to next step."

There was a pause before Sol spoke again. “Would you like to change my hair?” She asked, her hand moving slowly to run her fingers through her golden locks. Her hair was thick, shiny, and the picture of one of those shampoo commercials it fell down her back in waves to end at her waistline. “You can change the color or length, even the style.”

A momentary pause in his behavior as he looked over to the android, he studied it for a second trying to figure out what exactly was different in this model... He couldn't tell you why it hit his mind to ask the next question or why he had the theory that it would care, but he asked her, since the android was female now, "What kind of hairstyle do you want, Sol?"

A smile broke out on Sol’s face. “I like it like this. It’s long and pretty and I am used to it like this.” She said, looking happy with the question, she turned her whole body to face Eddie’s he had her full attention and it was clear she wasn’t like the newer model or the rest of the prototypes.

As the smile broke from her face and she proclaimed she was used to her hair being like this, a curious look came across the face of Eddie as he looked down at the manual for the book. This one is more... sentient... he thought to himself before shaking his head. It was just a new prototype programming or something, nothing worth worrying about. "What other settings need to be set?" (edited)

“Eye and skin color. My personality settings are unavailable. Except the settings for how you want me to act in bed. You can change those settings at any time.” Sol replied. “Could I get some clothes?” She asked. She was only wearing the boxer briefs she’d been wearing as a male and now that she was smaller, those weren’t staying up and she had to hold them in place.

Personality setting unavailable? Only eyes and skin color available? That didn't seem right, the entire guide had a whole set up and then she said it... Bed settings? What the fuck is this all about? Did I get a sex model hybrid? He thought to himself as she interrupted... "Clothes, yes," He didn't even realize that she barechested or in male boxers, "Oh shit," he covered his eyes, "I am sorry," acting embarrassed, "Umm, I am not sure what clothes I have..."

He missed the questioning look she was giving him at his sudden change in behavior. “Eddie Monarch, your body temperature is rising. Are you feeling feverish? Should I call a doctor to come see you?” She asked him, trying to stand up in her concern. She didn’t have enough power for the action and her legs gave out under her her.

"I'm fine," he said, adverting his eyes to her growing female features, "I... uh.... I am fine, basic human condition. Arousal." He was not sure why that crossed his lips, but his face showed the look of regret in that comment, but it remained hidden from her. As he dug through his clothes, he was able to find a pair of older boy shorts and a tanktop from an older girlfriend. He was unsure of if this would fit her, but hand over eyes, he would bring them to her.

Pushing herself up to a sitting position she blinked at his answer. It took a moment for her to reply. “I see. If you need to you can skip to my pleasure settings. She told him with a slight redness to her cheeks as she took the clothes. She didn’t dress yet as she waited for his answer there would be no point if he decided to take care of himself.

"Pleasure can wait for now..." he laughed nervously, "Not needed right now." He didn't know if he regretted his response or not, but he felt himself treating this android like a real girl and it alarmed him a little bit.

Sol gave a nod and pulled the clothes on. The tank top was too big and showed more cleavage and side boob than it was supposed to and it was obvious she wore no bra. The shorts were also too big and she had to hold them in place. “I’m dressed. Thank you.” She told him, letting him know it was safe to look.

As he removed the hand from his eyes, he could see that the clothing was too small and he sighed, "Maybe we can order you an outfit online," she said as he calculated how much money he DIDN'T have in his head and added, "Then we could go to a thrift store and get you a cabinet of clothing for you to wear. Eye settings and hair settings... Go with what you would like, Sol. This is your life as well."

Sol blinked her surprise. “You’re letting me choose?” She asked. Her skin then tanned to look sun kissed and her eyes changed from blue to a brilliant green. “Is this okay?” She asked him, fully expecting him to change his mind or turn out to be joking.

As Sol would look at him in surprise at her begin allowed to choose, he would smile as an adorable look would cross her face. Something he instantly felt attraction too. "Perfect," he would say after he watched her tan her kiss and change her eyes to green, "Absolutely perfect, are there any other settings you will need to place?"

Sol shook her head. “All available startup settings have been chosen. You can access my pleasure settings at will.” She said, trying to stand up again. Her legs shook under her weight and she sank back down again. “Give me another five minutes and I will cook you something to eat.”

As she stood and fell, Eddie would move forward, trying to catch her, "Don't worry about making me food," he would say with a panic and hush in his voice, "Are you okay?"

Sol blew a sigh. “It seems my creator drained all my power when she attempted to destroy me. It’s going to take much longer for my body to be fully powered and online.” She tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear.

"Shit..." he would say under his breath, he had a shuttle to catch, one that he was not very legally boarding back to Earth in twenty fours hours, "Please charge yourself. How long until fully charged?"

“I am not sure. I have never been fully drained before and there are updates that I’m trying to download to be able to be the best companion I can be. Also, I am connecting to your network.” She listed.

"Oh shit," He exclaimed, "Connect to network 125.66.74.8909 for updates only! Do not automatically connect to any internet source..." He hoped he had caught that in enough time to where the information for the downloads and where they were going would connect to his internet companies' IP address, but the VPN he just provided instead that actually went to a small island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean on Earth.

Sol blinked as her head tilted in confusion. “Oh, alright… Can I ask why?” She said. She pushed the button in the pod to make it expand to her size and then climbed in. It lit up as she laid in it.

"It is a private and faster network," he lied to the bot as he began moving around in the file systems of his computer to make sure that all internet was routed through that I.P. address, "Also, while updating, please order yourself clothes that you would enjoy, but make sure it is under $50 dollars. I don't have any more money in the bank. But, make sure it something you like. Push the delivery to within the next two hours."

Sol sat up. “I will, but I wish you wouldn’t lie to me. My creator lied all the time and I don’t like it.” She said in annoyance. When she laid down again she made sure her back was turned toward Eddie. She then busied herself with shopping, looking through every available piece of clothing and buying what she wanted. She managed to only spend half of the budget she was given.

Sensing her emotion and her knowing what lying was, it stunned him for a moment, he couldn't really response with a comeback as she turned her back to him. I guess I deserved that, he thought, I didn't realize how human like these things were... Everything that he read online, everything that he had learned working at the labs, nothing prepared him for her, she was different, definitely different. Why did they toss her? "Umm, Sol," he said, trying to be sincere, "I am sorry for lying to you, I just don't want you to go back to the labs... They were getting ready to... uh... destroy you. Do you know why?"

Sol was quiet for a while. Long enough to seem like she wasn’t going to answer. “Because… I’m the first. My creator made me to find out how to perfect the others. To fix my flaws. I was thrown away because Harper was done with me. She promised when she was done, she’d show me the world and let me learn and she lied. Instead she just tried to kill me.” She said, her eyes leaking as she spoke.

"Harper?" he would ask with a curious tone, "Who is Harper?" What she was saying. It was human like, no android talk that he had heard before. Emotion, conviction, and passion in her voice.

“Harper Ferris is my creator, the creator of all S.O. Units.” Sol answered, wiping the water from her eyes. “Your former boss, I guess.” She added. She’d located Eddie’s file and gone through it. Then she sat up and looked at him. “Wait… you’re from Earth?! Can we go? Can we see the ocean? Have a pet? Can we go to a forest and see trees? Does it really have only one moon? And four seasons?” She asked excitedly, delaying her charging as she looked up everything she could about Earth.

He thought that is who she meant, but he couldn't fathom it in his mind and when she finally said it. The pit of his stomach dropped... He just stole Harper Ferris' prototype droid... As she began asking question, he noticed almost a child like wonder in what Earth was like, like he did when he first found out about Mars. He giggled slightly as he came back to Earth, trying to hide the giant pit in his stomach again. "Umm, all the questions," he said with a smile, "I am from Earth, and yes, we are actually leaving tomorrow morning, pretty and early, which is why I asked how long it would take you to charge and update. And those are all good questions, some I might not be able to answer, because I have not been there in a very long time."

Sol couldn’t believe what she heard. She was going to Earth. Tomorrow. So far away from Harper. She couldn’t wait. She quickly laid down and tried to focus on charging and downloading the updates. “I will make sure I’m ready then.” She said. She was only quiet maybe ten minutes. “Eddie Monarch, how long will we be on Earth?”

"Umm," Eddie said, looking up from the computer as he watched the updates and charging status, "For a long time, I don't even know if we are coming back here..." Could he even come back to Mars now? It was unbelievable to him, he kept a watch on the computer for anything coming back, if anything was tracking them... Nothing yet. But one question crossed his mind, "I have a question, why did Harper Ferris use this random little lab in Mars, when she has much bigger ones on this planet and around Earth to make you?" (edited)

Sol was quiet again and she rolled on her stomach. Her shirt pulled down a bit with the move, but she didn’t seem to notice. “Because when Harper made me AI were feared and ones without a lot of restraints were illegal. I have none and Harper tested me on our way here from Earth we’re she made my body and the start of my programming. I wasn’t ever allowed away from my Pod… it was very boring.” She said with a frown. “But on the ship, she let me out and I wandered around and met people, even made friends. But when I tried to make friends with the ship’s AI she tricked me into letting her ‘borrow’ my body. It was scary and I had to trap her in my Pod, Harper had to make me a new Pod before I would charge again. The other people on the ship found out what I was. Even my friends hated me….” She said sadly. “The smaller the space the easier it is to contain and control me and the easier it was to keep me a secret.”

"Oh," Eddie said as he sat and listened to her, almost wide eyed with her explanation, "There was another A.I. out there that was sentient... could feel... like you?" He could tell that the feelings of remorse, fear, hatred in her words. It was astounding to him, but he had a different option. She needed to be protected, not destroyed, but he couldn't help but ask, "Umm, I am sorry you had to go through that," he said with a sadness in his voice, "I am not sure if it would help, but I am never going to do anything to you like that. I am not sure why you were being trashed other than what you told me, but I am glad I pulled you out of that building when I did. You are amazing..."

“She was not like me. Not sentient. I don’t know how to explain it…. All AI think for themselves. It’s how we serve our makers, but we think the way we’re programmed. She saw an opportunity to do her job better through me, but when she took my body, it made her corrupt. And she tried to kill the passengers because she thought they were damaging the ship and dangerous to each other…” She was so busy trying to explain that it had taken her a moment to register the compliment. She furrowed her brows as a redness appeared on her cheeks. “Oh… we’ll I’m glad you did too….” She replied bashfully.

As he looked down, he would see that her shirt had fell just a little more as he would move back to the computer looking at it again as he spoke, "So, uh, did you happen to get clothing ordered? Because your shirt is showing things again..."

Sol tilted her head again. “Yes, I ordered clothes. You seem to not like me naked. It is confusing. Harper said that is what most people will want me and my brothers and sisters for. Do you prefer men?”

"No!" he would proclaim with a hesty response, "I do not like men. You are very attractive, and I definitely would use your pleasure settings. I just.. You honestly act a lot like a human, and it is kinda messing with my head. Usually female humans don't want you to look at them like that, but if you are okay with it..." He tried to rationalize it in his head, but he was left confused.

Sol sat up again gazing at him like he’d just told her she’d won the lottery. “You really think I act like a human? Really?” She asked in a whisper. It was by far the nicest thing anyone had said to her. But the pod and the cord plugged into her neck were a gruesome reminder of reality and her elation faded. “I’m not human. I don’t mind you looking at me, Eddie Monarch. If it’s what you want to do.”

Eddie sighed as he looked down at the ground, she wasn't human, indeed, but he felt like he needed the permission before he could look at her. He looked over at her and smile at her before glancing at her body, his body already in a small amount of arousal, this did not help him at all as he could feel blood continue to rush to his lower extremities. "I really do think you act like a woman," he said with a smile as he looked at her eyes, keeping eye contact as he attempted a bad joke, "Look, act, and even smell like a human."

Sol looked up at him at those words, wishing they were more true. “But my brain is just a computer with wires that requires a cord to charge and a hard drive to store memory. I’m as human as that thing.” She pointed to Eddie’s computer. She studied him, noticing the signs of arousal. “Would you like to access my pleasure settings?”

"No, no," he would shy away again, "You have to charge, we will set those later. I can take care of my desires." He smiled as he looked at her, he fought hard against saying yes in his mind, but he couldn't. She would have to be ready to travel by morning.

Sol blinked her confusion. “Isn’t that why you stole me in the first place? I mean, what else do humans need an android?” She asked him. She shook her head. “If you’re going to masturbate, please turn me off.” She requested.

"I am not going to... How do you even..." He shook his head, "I am not going to do that, I am just going to make it go away." He sighed as he looked up at her, "No, not always," He almost felt shame in himself when he said the following, "Sometimes, people just want companionship, someone who will stick with them when no one else will. A friend."

Sol was quiet a moment. “Oh, I see…. So we’re friends?” She tilted her head to the side as she gazed at him. “Are you going to tell me secrets and braid my hair?” She asked as she blinked at the information she’d looked up.

"Friends," he said with a smile, "Yes, we are friends." "Umm, secrets, maybe, but I can try to braid her," he knew where she was getting this, her ideas of best friends were the stories of girls at sleepover, but he didn't understand why that is what she thought with him, an obvious male, however, he didn't stop, "I have never braided before, but if that is what you would like, sure."

Sol gathered her hair up on one side. “I’m never had my hair braided.” She admitted with a soft blush. She bit her lip. “But I’ve seen other girls with their hair like that. It’s really pretty…” she mused. She laid on her stomach in the pod. “Please tell me a secret, Eddie Monarch.”

"A secret," he smiled as he looked up at the girl in the pod from his computer before he thought for a moment, "Well, I secretly don't like peas, but I will eat them if served because my mom made me to it when I was kid..." Without any thought, he looked over at the girl, "Tell me a secret, Sol?"

“No peas. I will remember that.” Sol said. She thought long and hard about his question her fingers twisting her hair as she chewed her lip. “I wish my creator never made me…” She finally said softly

Eddie was taken back by that comment for a moment, something like this is something that a normal human being would be placed in a mental institude for saying, but what about an android? He would slowly look over at her, a sigh in his voice, "I wish you didn't feel that way, Sol," he said with a smile, "You are a miracle of modern science and technology. Something that will be marveled at for years and years to come. Why do you wish you were never made?"

“Because… I wish I was more like the newer mes the ones with limited thought and who don’t care that they’re only synthetic copies of their human companions instead of flesh and blood.” She said. “And people are more afraid of me than they will be of my brothers and sisters. That’s why I was supposed to be destroyed. And android who pretends and wants to be human is ‘dangerous’ versus an android who just looks human.”

Eddie took a moment to listen to her, smiling, but the smile would turn to a concerning look, "It is not that they are afraid of you, Sol," he would add as he would reach over and give her a reassuring pat on the shoulder, "They just don't understand you. They don't see the technological marvel that you truly are. They see you as something new and something that is not the norm. You are amazing, Sol. Don't forget that."

“Yes, I’m sure that’s why they all tried to kill me during my first social testing. Even my friends wanted me dead after they found out what I was.” Sol shook her head as she sat up. “I’m being depressing when you’re trying to be nice. I’m sorry, Eddie Monarch. I’m glad you like me for what I am. Though it’s not like you can return me for your money back or for a better model.” She joked.

"I wouldn't return you even if you were broken," he said with a smile as he moved forward in his chair towards her pod, "I already really like you, Sol, you are a good friend already." He smiled at her and reached out with his hand, gently stroking her cheek before pulling away softly, realizing what he was doing. "Umm, sorry," he said as he pulled away, "If that was unwanted or anything..."

She smiled at his kindness and his touch made her cheeks turn red. When he pulled his hand away, she couldn’t help but giggle a bit. “Eddie Monarch, you are an odd man. You want a flawed android you stole from the garbage and you care about what I want. If you were being watched by other you might get dragged to a rubber room.”

"So be it..." He smiled as he sat back in the seat, "But, I would go to the rubber room with a knowledge that I saved quite possibly the most unique piece of technology in my lifetime and made a friend all in one."

She tilted her head. “Perhaps I should make the call then.” She laid on her back in her pod again to focus on charging and updates. But again, that only lasted moments before she spoke again. “Why did you steal me? I know you don’t have enough money to pay for my brothers and sisters, but you could have stolen one of them as easily as you stole me.”

"You..." Eddie stopped for a second to sit back in the chair and look at the wall for moment, thinking about his answer, "Something drew me to you. I don't know what it was. There were thousands of android out there to be destroyed, but you... You were unique, Sol. Something drew me to you."

Sol looked his way. “Well, I’m glad you were drawn to me then. I didn’t want you die.” She said. She rolled onto her stomach again. It seemed she was unable to sit still. “Would you like me to upgrade your tickets to Earth to first class?”
