William looked back at Allie as she grabbed at her shirt, listening to her explanation. Sheriff Grey grinned at the sight of the girl behind him, he smiled back at William, "Oh, I am sorry, William," he stated with a smirk, "I didn't realize you had company over."
William played it off, smiling back at him, "Yeah," William stammered, "An old family friend that wanted to talk about Susan. God bless her soul."
The sheriff noted in agreement as he looked back at the girl, "Hello, Sheriff Grey, I run the law enforcement in Stillwater. I must say, I have never seen someone like you around these parts before, I would definitely remember you. What is your name, darling?"
William watched intently as Sheriff Grey stuck his hand out to greet the golden curled girl. "Yeah, we were a bit predisposed talking about Susan and once she heard that, she choose to keep us both inside for safety, I guess, you know how women can be." William gave Sheriff Grey a nudge, which he seemed to chuckle at and smiled.
"Believe me, son," Sheriff Grey stated, "Back when Rebecca was alive, I one hundred percent understand that she would want you to stay and not go out."
Sheriff Grey's smile slowly faded, and in its place, his authoritative tone returned, "Well, look, there is a huge hole in your old corn field, with nothing inside of it. No fire, debris, nothing, just a big hole of unsettled dirt. I mean, I can't do anything about it since it is your property, but stuff like that just doesn't happen. I wouldn't be surprised if you hear from someone in the coming days, NASA, newspapers, Mrs. Karen for more gossip, who knows, so be prepared. I will leave you all to it, have a good night."
With a tip of his hat, the sheriff exited the porch into his police car and back away off the property. William turned back to Allie, "Thank you for not saying you were a star."
