His father gave him a rare smile as he nodded to his son, he wasn’t the most emotional of people but he showed his feelings when around those he trusted. Sometimes at least. “Well, I’m glad that it didn’t give you trouble.” His smile died down when he opened the briefcase and looked at the money something being off to his shrewd eyes the movement, he saw it. “Hey Harvey does this look like real money to you?” He asked his brother lifting the money up in his hands to see the way the light hit it.
When Harvey saw it, he couldn’t keep himself from snickering his hands quickly going to his face to compose himself “no it doesn’t.” he told the man before turning back towards Max with a slight frown on his face. “Sorry kid but you’ve been duped” he said making Max deflate.
His hands went to his head, running his hands through his hair as a wave of humiliation hit him, “I probably should have been more suspicious from how happy she seemed to be to just give the money away.” he said with a sigh before standing up straighter wanting to make this right.
“I’ll go out again tomorrow early this time, to get the money and I’ll make sure that the money isn’t fake.” Max promised as he turned to his father, his eyes silently pleading for the man to give him another chance causing him to wave his hand.
“Fine, fine.” the man grumbled a little annoyed that his son fell for a trick like this so easily. His hands clenched into his fists before he pointed at his son “You get one more try to make up for this.” He told his son planning to send people that were more persuasive next time if he failed. He then smiled softly at his son, muscles loosening “now get out of here, dinners almost ready so freshen up.” he said dismissing his son.
Max smiled and nodded, thankful for the second chance as he waved goodbye to the two of them but not before grabbing onto the briefcase. He planned to get up bright and early to knock until she forked over their protection money.
