The structure stood before them, slumped and jutting from the earth like a rotting tooth from black gums. The porch steps creaked under their boots and they had to hop a hole at the top that looked down into the dank space beneath. The front door sagged to the left like a crooked spine. The front room of the house was strewn with hanging strings of moss, and a cardboard cut out with red LEDs stared from the space beneath the stairs. They heard the group in front of them on the floor above. They sounded to be children, from their high pitched screams, considering no older person would find this shitty haunted house frightening. It was a house of cliche and cardboard. Their group passed through with only the little hop from a cheap jumpscare. Definitely not worth the five ticket entry fee but hey, it was a tiny Midwest town in the middle of corn fields. The most scary thing about this place was the lack of steady cell connection.... the group stepped back into the hub of the small park, different paths running to different rides and attractions. They pulled a flyer from their coat, looking at the image of a clown grinning from ear to ear advertising an "Halloween Show, 'Traveling' Circus! Once every fifty years! Over 15 different acts!" It wasn't often the circus came to your town, the flyers proclamation of fifty years seemingly true. No one they'd asked remembered the show except for the crazy old man that lived down the road and screamed at birds. But the current attraction carried none of the same flyer they carried in hand now. What circus didn't advertise their own shows? (edited)
