Delayed rhythmic collision of water droplets against the metallic surface of the wash basin sounding audibly was the first thing collected into memory as fatigue and grogginess instantly assailed him. Eventually though, dim lighting allowed usually delayed opening of eyes to be expedited, attempting to blink away blurred vision while sitting up from the cold concrete surface, mumbling under his breath at the unfamiliarity of the place before attempting to rise. That’s when the audible snap of chain links as well as his arm being restricted from moving alongside him was noticed. “The fuck?” Mumbled more then anything, bicep drew taut as he snapped arm towards him twice only for handcuffs to keep him locked in place. His handcuffs…fatigue disappeared without a trace as adrenaline flared within, a small moment of panic being shoved away and allowing his training and even personality to retain control. Shouting would do little more then draw attention, instead focusing gaze around the interior of the room. It appeared to be some manner of warehouse, or industrial complex, various tools scattered around all significantly out of reach. Idly, free hand searched pockets for the key that was missing, only for the puzzle piece to be located across the room at the base of…another person?

“What the fuck is going on?” Barely beneath the breath as the distance combined with lack of proper lighting prevented the man from ascertaining any features or even gender, instead making out the dark silhouette of someone laying upon their side. “Pssst! Can you hear me?” While audible level of volume remained minimal, there was a harshness laced into that whisper turning it sharp and carrying it across the room despite the person not seeming to budge or move. It would just be his luck that time passed had been invested speaking to a corpse. Letting the chain go slack as his arm stopped tugging against the cuffs, attention sweeped around him, once to the door then to the corner nearest him, one of those wooden push brooms dragged over. With a swivel, he’d detached the shaft from the heavy sweeping head. Instead of throwing the entire broom head at the hopefully sleeping figure, he snapped free about a hand long length of the broom handle before tossing it across the room at the person. “Hey!” Followed along, barely more than a sharp whisper.

Somewhere in the distance the words etched along the confines of her skull. Harsh at first but quickly growing faint as the fog swept in again leaving her adrift. Mind determined to stay in that state, eased by the comfort. Pain had become a minor discomfort but enough to make it easy to ignore and stay in the induced fog laced dream. Images danced in the back of her mind, flickering emotions and wordless actions. Her body lay still under the insistent pressure from outside forced. The aimed broom shot across the space, skidding into her back and effectively sending tendrils of pain to radiate through her. A moan pressed into the fullness of her lips, bubbling upward along her strained vocal cords. She shifted ever so slightly and moved to rub her head but fell short. The clink of chains echoed in her mind causing the fog which only moments ago had been thick and hazy to dissipate. The sounds filled the room were much clearer, giving way to an uneasy, sinking feeling. Aspen tried once more to lift her hand upward and touch her head, if only to brush the thick, damp hair from out of her face. No luck. This alone caused her eyes to snap open in a rapid flutter. Muscles screamed in protest when she moved her body to position her palms to press into the dirty floor. Fingers curled inward at the filth. The texture of the floor was strange and alien. Another soft sound of pain or confusion carried on the air within the space they resided in. .

Finally Aspen lifted herself up into a seated position and stared blankly around. It took her a good three minutes to notice him. Once she did the blue in her eyes thinned as her pupils widened. In an almost scratchy voice she asked. “What… where am I?” With a little more effort she was able to sit up more fully, pulling her slender jean clad legs up under her. “Who are you and why am I here?”

Grew increasingly annoyed due to something that should of not bothered him quite as much as it did, the feeling of his own cuffs collapsed upon his wrist when he’d been so used to being on the other side of the equation. The hand-sized piece of broomstick seemed to elicit the desired reaction…waking the bitch up. To be fair perhaps she was a very nice lady but all things considered, Dietrich’s mood already significantly soured from the situation they both appeared to be within. Part of him simply reckoned allowing her to come to conclusions herself would be best. Patience quickly wore thin though despite the exterior nonchalant composure or perhaps some measure of bravado exuded. The first question past lips seemed a reasonable enough one, though its existence alone caused a small curse to die upon own lips, realizing his own confusion was mimicked across the room. “Shit…I was hoping you’d be able to tell me where we were. Does anything look familiar? Anything at all?” His line of work, Dietrich had seen a finite but astounding number of rundown warehouses so picking one out of the bunch at least at the moment seemed next to impossible.
19:10
It hardly seemed the time for introductions, but all things considered, answering questions oftentimes set people at ease, allowing the muscles in arms to slack and letting the limb hang with the cuffs providing support. “I have no clue why you’re here. I just got back home for the evening, was about to get in the shower and remember feeling a pinch on the side of my neck. Next thing I know I woke up here a few minutes ago. My name is Dietrich, I’m a detective…” Lips parted in a small manner of amusement, a flash of pearly whites. “This is where id normally show you my badge but…” Clink Clink, own cuffs rattled against metal as he gave a tug or two to emphasize. “Not that I think I have it on me anyways. What’s your name? What’s the last thing you remember?” Gaze slipped down to the key within reach of her foot if only a second, forcing himself to remain a bit patient instead of demanding she kick them over to him, attention wandering about the room. Being polite and courteous was not always his strong suit, one of the reasons he became a detective and was not a part of patrol anymore.

Delicate brows arched upward, slanting just right to display frustration and anger. Full lips pulled into a thin line. Heat flared but quickly faded at his words and in the wake of anger a sense of fear settled through her entire being. Aspen shivered. Instantly her mind took stock of her surrounding, the scents and feel of the room she found herself held captive. There was a faint odor, mold maybe, that drifted along the slow breeze from some unknown source. Aspen shifted to a more comfortable position, facing the man which she eyed with weary resignation. “How long have you been aw-“ Her words cut short under the weight of his own questioning which oddly seemed more important. For a second maybe four Aspen thought about what she remembered last. Coming out of a store after looking forward to a nice comfortable time at home with a bottle of wine. Her big case and the discovery her boss promised would break the case wide open. “Getting a bottle of wine and walking to my car. I don’t remember much else that could be useful.” Pulling her legs closer to herself Aspen fought the urge to brush a few wayward locks of dark brown hair from out of her face. “I’m Aspen Grant?” Her voice was rough, graveled even as if she swallowed sand but under the layers of rock a melodic note carried over each syllable. “Do you have any idea’s as to what we are hear? I guess you just got too close but I’m a nobody with nobody connections.” Aspen shifted again, pain lanced through her causing that dirt smudged face to twist in correspondence with the pain. With effort she rolled her shoulder back and whimpers a little at the intrusion of pain. “It didn’t hurt before.” Then again it could easily be the position of her arms behind her back and laying on them at such an awkward angle. Light hazel eyes swept the ground and happened to land upon a set of keys. Emotions flickered over her face, surprise and then excitement dancing in unison. “Hey, I think these are keys to the cuffs.” Aspen exclaimed in an excited tone. Shifting she scooted forward and moving as she practically bounced on her ass. Grunting in her efforts it took her a good two minutes to actually get them. Twisting her body and moving in different ways to blindly feel for them. All the while making disgusted faces at the dirt caked on the ground. With a little effort Aspen lifted herself up and onto her knees. Using one leg to pull out and up, making a kind of bridge to lift herself up and onto both feet. It took all of a few seconds to walk to him, turn around and stoop by one of his hands. “Can you get it?” she waited for the feel of his fingertips and the lifted weight of the keys before once again moving to give him –or what she hoped – better advantage in freeing her.

Dietrich appeared for all intents and purposes relatively calm despite the extraneous event that was his…their kidnapping. Inwardly was an entirely other story roiling beneath the surface, anxiety, fear, anger, frustration each having its own barely constrained compartment. Despite knowledge inherent with profession, it was clear there was still the animalistic instinctual struggle against metallic cuffs, thin lines of red apparent beneath the overall flush of irritated skin surrounding his wrist. Polite manners were irrelevant considering the situation but turning someone hostile due to bubbling frustration would only make things increasingly difficult. One skill that is and would be always useful was the ability to listen, and that’s exactly what he had done with her unfinished question. “Well Aspen Grant, Id say it’s a pleasure meeting you, but under the circumstances…” Metallic rattle issued only for a moment as shoulders rose and fell in an almost casual manner before continuing. “I've only been awake a few minutes myself, and I don’t think anything Im working is related to….” Gaze swept about the room for a moment as if the words followed before simply “This…” If it were any other situation, the bouncing butt movement would of been almost comical and perhaps even dangerously close to cute. Right now, it caused little more then impatience to flare within, nearly causing the man to bristle before reminding himself with a mental elbow to the ribs so to speak, both of their options were severely limited. The obvious statement instead of drawing a ‘no shit’ simply provided a slow nod of the head as he allowed infamous temper to deflate and even offer a smile. “Good, Good!”
23:37
Astute and observant gaze rested solely upon the progress as Aspen made her way towards him. Due to the high difference of her hands behind her back and his own elevated caused some acrobatics that were uncomfortable to say the least. “I can’t reach it…” A disgruntled sound echoed forth past lips as he grumbled incoherently about something likely better left unsaid. “The only way ill be able to get it is if you put the key in my mouth…” The dirt and muck made it less then appealing as his wrists bled, allowing himself to hang from the handcuffs positioned around chest level, shoulder popping audibly and loudly from the effort and lowering himself down with a painful grunt of exertion a few more inches. Leaning forward slightly, lips found the key, pinching it between lips and raising back to his feet, the key was pushed forward by lips into his palm and after fumbling for a few seconds the audible click of the cuffs allowed the locking mechanism to break free, following the other one and pushing the cuffs into his back pocket before working hers to the point where they opened, tossing those to the side and pocketing the key. “You alright?” Though the question was to her, he seemed distracted over at the solid, reinforced door as he gave it a few tugs without budging, locked from the outside. “Look around and see if there's anything at all that can help us get out…and something to defend yourself with should they come back while we’re looking…” If they had been in another environment, Dietrich would even be thinking along the lines of how attractive she was even despite the dirt and dust they both seemed to accumulate in a layer…instead though, he simply continued to look about, attempting to find anything to help with an exit while grabbing a rusted screwdriver on a table for himself. “See anything?”

Put it in his mouth? An image conjured inside her mind’s eye was far from pleasant. While her hands might have knocked off most of the dirt, grime and other debris she couldn’t help but notice a slick slime like texture coating the keys left from the liquid from the ground. That perk nose wrinkled ever so slightly, along with the curling of her lips as she nearly chocked on her word. “Okay.” In little to no time she’d managed to work the key to his mouth, waited for the secure hold of his lips onto the metal before releasing and stepping away. Wide eyes watched his movement, the cord of muscles and the ease in which he handled himself. Aspen tilted her head but once he found himself free he saw to her own and both now stood looking to find a way out of their current predicament. A situation she was mostly sure had been caused by herself and her race as a whole. It was true most didn’t know about shifters but the few humans that did haunted her kind for either sport or fear. Not wanting to give away anything Aspen struggled with the growing desire to shift and free herself. Before he suggested looking around she positioned herself in front of the large pipe to the left of the door. “We might be in a caller or basement.” She said, her voice picked at the words with unease. Blue eyes followed his movement, the way he tugged at the door before giving up and looking elsewhere. Everywhere she looked she saw dirt and more dirt. Nothing looked like a potential exit, but then again she’d never been trained as he had to see every detail. After a few minutes Aspen walked over in a slow meander to the front door and pressed the palms of her hands against the cool rusted surface. Pushing into it until her muscles strained she could only detect a slight shift as the door held firm. Maybe with a little more effort. “Hey, maybe if we both push the door will give, it moved a little.” A measure of excitement soaked into her voice. Turning to him an expression of hopefulness etched beautifully against her face. “Unless you found a way out, I’d love to hear that.” Blue eyes fell onto his handsome face, staring at him for his answer and likely denial. No matter where she looked everything seemed locked tight with only one way out. If she had to Aspen would reveal herself to him but first she had to at least try. “ If you aren’t working on anything that could cause this then why do you think they want you?” Keeping the conversation on him she leaned into the door and once again it groaned under the pressure of her weight.

It was not exactly a picnic of sorts for himself either, there was no universe in which he wanted to put the filthy key in his mouth but compared to the alternative of remaining locked up it had been an easy choice. Gaze flickered about the room as she mentioned the possibility of being in a cellar or a basement, it was possible considering the lack of windows. One thing that was noticed opposite the door was an air vent. Leaving that thread untugged for the moment, the proposition of putting both of their efforts against the door was at least reasonable. “Id love to be able to tell you exactly what you want to hear, unfortunately no way out as of yet…” Alert and focused, attention lingered upon the woman…just a normal human woman. Of course, why would he believe anything different? It was not as if there was some reason, he’d suspect her of being a shifter. One of the joys of being a cop was oftentimes a double-edged sword regarding information. Stories and gossip had been passed along after the alleged discovery of her kind, but most of it was dismissed along with all the other supernatural nonsense people spouted while drugged or drunk. “I would have to know who ‘they’ are before I could ever hope to answer that. Unless you don’t ever watch the news, Id imagine you realize cops aren’t exactly the most loved members of the community as of late. You know something I don’t?”
17:58
Despite the negativity, it seemed to all be captured in stride, lips parting to release an almost comically light hearted laughter considering the gravity of the situation. While speaking to her, attentive gaze traversed the attractive silhouette of her body, admiring despite the situation though not leering before setting up next to her and planting his feet, putting both his weight and the strain of muscles against the door. The audible groan of the aged metal hit a peek as the handle of the door snapped clear away tumbling into the dirt and Dietrich along with it considering he’d been pushing with all the force he could muster. Standing eventually and brushing the now dirty clothes free of some dust before looking at her much closer this time, then over to the vent. He would never fit due to his broad shouldered frame…but her… “How are you with tight spaces?” That solitary question laid an entire scenario before them “Can you bring the screwdriver sitting over on the table where I was cuffed?”

The mind doesn’t always want to grasp what the gut is saying of a situation. In this case, Aspen’s brain still thought along the lines of this being a sick, stupid prank. Maybe this guy who likely isn’t a cop is in on the little joke. Instinct screamed out a strong negative but panic and the brains willpower firmly overruled all logic. Halfheartedly Aspen searched the room only to return back to the door. Rusted, battered and older than a cheap re-usable condom. The delicate lines of her face wrinkled at the thought but stared determinably at the door as if it held all the answers. “I'm bartend at night, and work at Walmart asking little snot nosed brats to sit pretty for the picture. I don’t know diddly squat.” The slight bite that entered her voice was mostly all bark. However, his compliance to trying her suggestion helped in easing her discomfort. That didn’t stop her from nearly rolling her eyes at his comment or shaking her head. “I don’t even know if you are a cop and this could just be a joke a friend of mine set up.” Aspen said as she followed his lead and shoved at the door. Pushing with every bit of strength, allowing for a second the shifter to take over and push far harder than she might have. With a gasp the handle gave way and off she went. Nearly tumbling backward before managing to rebalance herself instinctually. Hopefully he’d not even caught her blunder. With both hands she dusted them off along the thick denim of her jeans, wiping them off before smacking her hips after seeing a layer of thick copper rust. “Um, I do alright.” Aspen tilted her head upward at the vent, judging if she’d even fit. While slender and fit Aspen was by no means a toothpick of a woman, curved hips, large breasts, a classic hour shaped body. If she could get her breasts through without difficulty then maybe it could work. If she shifted he’d be able to but Aspen wasn’t willing to reveal herself to a stranger. Instead she nodded slowly in a considering manner as she went to retrieve the screwdriver only to not see one “If you can fit I should be able to.” “There isn’t a screwdriver.” The words exited her mouth even as she turned to look around the place, trying to find something to replace the tool. Using the bottom of her shoes Aspen pushed aside one thing of another before turning around at the sound of his voice.

The mind was a terrible thing to waste as it often was said. Throughout the situation what appeared to be a relatively calm exterior all things considered clearly was not the case as her words caused brows to knit and check his pocket. “Oh…about that, forgot I grabbed it earlier…” Never the strongest with multi-tasking it would appear that both brain and attitude was focused soley upon the task of getting away from the building, ideally never returning. Considering he himself went flying, there was hardly a moment except from a possible mid-air epiphany if that were such a thing to notice anything amiss. Holding the business end of the screwdriver up to illuminate the fact it had been in his hand. Wiggling the flathead into the small groves between the metal and wall, Dietrich seemed to make progress prying the metal of the vent backwards, the locations where screws normally would be utilized for holding the grate in place instead scorched dark by welding markers. The occasional grunt of exertion was pushed forth while speaking aloud, working a few inches at a time until one of the corners popped free. “You got some pretty sick friends if you believe they would ever set up something like this as a prank” Another corner popped free, stopping for just a second to wipe away sweat on his brow only to turn and face her. “It makes no difference if you believe I am a cop or not. I can see bartender with you, but not walmart. I am only interested in getting out of here, figuring out who is responsible…and” Lips parted only to shut and instead offer a smirk before finishing with a thought that was clearly different then the original. “And having a perfectly civil conversation with them…” (edited)
18:59
Voice trailed as he went back to work, one corner popping free, then another and within minutes the telltale rattle of metal upon the ground echoed forth as the grate fell none too quietly. It was at that point Dietrich faced her squarely. “I know I can’t fit, that’s why I asked how YOU were with tight spaces. Air vents usually lead over the hallways. Maybe you can shimmy your way through, drop down and remove whatever has the door jammed in place…” It was not exactly on a list of things to do, or by any means safe… but then again nothing about the situation was. If she did agree, Dietrich would boost her up and hopefully not grab too much ass helping push her into the vent. Not that he’d mind, but she might not be too fond of said occurrence.

Sick didn’t even cover half the situation in regards to her friends or people she knew well enough to count as friends. Survival was an ever changing event with her kind. Keeping each other on their toes was meant in good faith but could often go awry. Choosing not to replicate her end of the conversation, Aspen allowed the topic to fade with his focus on the vent. The more he talked the less likely her friends had hatched this entire harebrained scheme. In fact, Aspen couldn’t help noticing the tone of his voice which clearly screamed cop and the way he sounded perfectly sane and confident. Yeah not good. Attention moved from the man wielding the garage tool to the not useless door. If she could just slam her entire weight into the door maybe it’d give way. Not always the brightest at thinking on her feet, creative solutions had never been her strong point. Which wasn’t to say she was stupid or lacking in intelligence. Moving towards the door Aspen gave way to the large predator lurking just under the surface, channeling the strength without shifting. At a full run she barreled into the rusty, solid metal door. Eyes closed and face scrunched tight as she braced herself for impact. The key word when describing the door is solid. Aspen slammed into it with a resounding thud that shook the frame but otherwise did not a damn thing. Emitting a throaty, painful grown Aspen staggered back clutching her right shoulder. Not the best idea but panic had made it difficult to stand idle while the maybe-cop worked on the vent. Turning to him, an abashed expression found on her face and a lift of her hand in warning. If only she’d listened to him more maybe she’d have found his solution held more merit. Rubbing her arm she grimaced with every step. Standing before the vent she couldn’t look at him, not right now at least. Instead, lifting her shoulder in a painful but luckily not broken or dislocated shoulder she took that moment to eye the opening. “Sure, I think I can. Shouldn’t be too difficult.” The words fell from her lips on a much more normal cadence then before. With both hands grasping the edge of the vent she hauled herself up and into the vent, quickly wiggling herself inside. Twice she nearly kicked him in the face. “Sorry.” She said as she did managed to kick something hard, maybe a shoulder or chest. Carefully she army crawled, fighting the urge to shift and make the trek easier. Turning this way and that she found another vent in a location she hoped was where she needed to end up. Pushing it out Aspen grunted and grimaced all at the same time when the metal vent clattered to the ground. She paused for a solid to minute in breathless anticipation. Exhaling she pulled herself out and adjusted her body so her feet hit the floor. Then she set about looking for the damn door.

There remained certain immutable facts in life that people would ever have difficult successfully disputing. Water was wet, fire was hot…and when someone was crazy enough to run straight into a rusted yet altogether solid metal door, it required a person to stop and watch. Maybe it was the strength in which the collision occurred, or the pondering of thought sequence which it took in order to make that the best decision regardless of the moment, Dietrich simply stared in quiet disbelief as metal proved stronger than flesh and she bounced from its frame. Eyes narrowed, struggling to come up with words befitting the event that occurred, lips parting, then shutting…then parting, and shutting only for the hand held in silent warning. In normal situations, Dietrich would of ignored the nonverbal warning entirely, but it was the abashed expression which rendered him mute at the moment. Instead, chest swelled as lungs took in a deep breath only to return to the task at hand and not mention a word about the previous attempt. Attention befell the rotation of her shoulder, eyeing the joint and noticing no particular sound or better yet hinged movements. “Just be careful, pretty sure we’re alone right now, but there’s no way to be certain…” No voices or noises from outside the door had occurred since they had been locked up, but then again the people on the other side weren’t scrambling to find an escape either.
20:34
Head weaved back once, then twice to avoid the flailing feet only for attention to be distracted momentarily and receiving a footprint directly on his chest. Without leverage or too much force it did little more then scrape the skin and dirty the surface of his shirt. Once she was in all the way own hands gripped the edge, muscles clenching as he pulled himself up so he could peek inside and make sure she was managing alright, instead Dietrich was gifted the realization that whatever she was, it came with an add-on of a curvy buttocks. No time to be caught perving, once she had turned out of sight, he returned to the door. The butt of the screwdriver was utilized to lightly tap where the handle used to be, nothing exceedingly loud that would echo through the halls but enough for someone on the other end to know there was a person behind the door. Piercing gaze slipped up to the vent once more, debating the intelligence of sending someone who seemed to occasionally let their panic take control. It was hardly realistic to expect anything but that though, all things considered. In a rare moment Dietrich allowed his own mind to wander. It was of course possible that she saw an exit and just took off leaving the man stranded, after all she didn’t know him, or owe him anything. Instead though he looked around for another moment, for anything that could be used as a makeshift weapon. The rusted pipe she’d been standing next to earlier was gripped at the bottom and after wrenching it multiple different ways managed to break it free, keeping it tight in his grip only to return to the tap upon the door, waiting patiently as a prisoner could.

‘I should run.’ No sooner did the thought conjure within her mind before just as quickly discarded. Aspen was many things but dishonorable wasn’t among those things in which made up the very fiber of her being. Just the thought left a sour taste in the back of her throat, leaving her to swallow a mouthful of pooled saliva. No, she would not leave him behind. Hopefully, she hadn’t made a mistake when the opportunity presented itself. What if he would have left? She had no choice but to trust his word. Inside a darkened room she surveyed every inch of the room with a slow methodical attention. Using the animal’s ears, sight and smell Aspen studied everything. It wasn’t until she’d opened the door slowly that she heard the light tapping. Yeah… cop. His identity and the gravity of their situation slammed in on her. Making it a touch difficult to breath. Someone had gotten ahold of her, and knew how much drugs to give her. Maybe she was jumping to conclusions that didn’t have anything to do with anything. The little voice inside her screamed that was a fat chance. Moving into the dirty hall Aspen turned towards the sound of tapping and headed in that direction. Only passing through one other door that lead down a flight of stairs. Closing each door behind her so not to alert anyone, she descended the steps and walked to the door. Against the door rested a large metal pipe, rusted but just as fucking solid as the damn door. A grimace touched her face sat the memory with the door incident, before she yanked the pipe up with little effort and a lot of strength. Naturally, with her luck, she sent herself falling back on the very ass he’d been admiring. With the pipe cleared and out of the way, the solid door opened enough for the other occupant to push it the rest of the way. Cheeks stained red she lifted both hands and said “Ta-da.” A sheepish smile claiming the fullness of her lips as she pushed herself up to her knees. Rocking back in one fluid motion Aspen lifted herself up and onto her feet. Using her hands she dusted herself off, feeling dirt and possibly animal’s droppings felling to the ground. “Okay, Mr. Cop, what do we do now?” She held no shame in the fact that she would follow his lead, do what he said and maybe make it out alive.

The desire to survive was hardly a reason to cast blame upon another, most people in their daily lives facing little more regarding survival then the decision between what would grace the dinnerplate and the monotony of work. As a cop there was some level of danger in just about every moment to be made outside the home, as this day was testament to…some were significantly worse than others. Dietrich would have never been able to live with himself leaving her behind, despite being a significant asshole on the daily, his moral compass leaned towards helping people, at least usually. Lips were moistened instinctively as a bit of nervousness accompanied the slow methodical tap, only for whatever had been upon his face leaving a putrid taste in his mouth. Hell, maybe it was the key and he’d just not had a moment to let it all sink in. Commotion from the other end of the door caused knuckles to whiten with the tight grip around the makeshift weapon the rusted pipe proved to be. It was probably the woman. Ass something, he wasn’t the best with names. With the door ajar if only slightly, it was pushed open the rest of the way to reveal her on her ass. Well kept teeth were displayed in an amused grin, start contrast to the dirt and grime covering the man as she explained Ta-da.
21:35
Perhaps it was the momentary jubilation even though it barely made it to his face, that was the only real explanation for the next line. “Mr. Cop was my father’s name, just call me Dietrich, or D if its easier to remember…” Was that a joke? Who knew as she asked the question and immediately attention swiveled from side to side. One direction simply ended in a brick wall while the other took them down a corridor ending with some stairs leading up. Instead of acting with panic, the mans training and instinct took over, despite the white of his knuckles showing as he gripped the pipe tightly. Dietrich was just as susceptible to fear as the rest of them, blowing out a bit of air to calm his nerves before formulating a plan. “Just keep an eye out, whatever this is, we have a better chance if we stick together. Keep an eye behind us, and ill keep an eye up front” Handing over the rusted pipe, showing a small level of trust as he gave away the metallic weapon, Dietrich began down the corridor with her close behind, making it all the way to the stairs before peeking around and up. It was almost silent to him, straining to hear what sounded like muffled whimpers coming from whatever room was at the top of the stairs, voice muted and calm again. “I think I hear something…Im not sure, just stay close…” With that being said, he began trekking up the stairs to the closed door with a dirtied pane of glass in a small square up top. There didn’t seem to be anybody walking about, but there were various cages strewn about the room, mostly empty.
21:35
Inside a few of the cages though were chained and drugged shifters barely lucid or conscious and emitting the occasional pained whimper. To Dietrich they looked like normal people, especially in the barely lit atmosphere of the room, pushing the door open and approaching one of the cages eliciting a harsh whisper. “Hey, can you hear me? You okay?” No response…Attention shifted about the room. There was no way even with the few extra people they would be able to get out undetected and call for help especially having to carry the barely conscious individuals. Attention shifted to Aspen to gauge her reaction, own momentary jubilation shifting to somber disgust at the situation. “We’re not going to be able to get out of here carrying them with us…we need to get out, and call for help” Being who he was, that meant the cops…but what would that mean for the rest of them? Shifters were still openly regarded with fear usually, and that meant danger.

Falling in line behind him Aspen let the momentary smile tug each corner of her lips up while soundlessly mouthing his name. His name was uttered under her brother four times before exiting into the upper section of the place and into the hallway she’d came through moments ago. By now that smile she’d given long since faded, replaced with a determined expression, with knitted brows. Every sound, movement, smell and taste funneled through her senses, easily processed and shifted where it was needed most. Such as the scent of bleach far off to the right. Keeping close enough to have his six, Aspen moved with relative soundless ease. Hips moving naturally back and forth with each step. “D… do you think we will get out?” She couldn’t stop the fearful note from creeping into her voice. A fractured sound hitched somewhere in the middle, ending on a slightly strangled pitch. This wasn’t who she knew herself to be, fear reclaimed the parts of herself she’d never known existed. Trepidation seeped into her soul, making it difficult at times to think clearly. He was use to this, his cop put him in dangerous situations on the regular. Watching cop shows and movies couldn’t be completely off base… right? For nearly four minutes the two navigated slowly, silently down the halls and through one area after another until a familiar scent assaulted her senses. Instinctually she knew what lay within the cages. Every hair on the back of her neck stood on end. The breath she’d held burned her lungs. Aspen studied the people, their faces shadowed in the darkened interior but their scent… fuck she knew their scent. Not all of them but most were familiar. Every part of her rebelled at the idea of leaving them. “We can’t leave them… we can’t abandon them to this. What if he comes back and kills them. They can’t die here.” Her voice flooded the confines of her throat in a panicked whisper. Knowing he spoke the truth didn’t help ease her guilt. She breathed in, peering back at them. Still, near lifeless save for the even breaths filling their lungs. Aspen closed her eyes and forced herself to move on, to follow his lead. If only she could get outside, find a phone, call her father, or the clan alpha she’d be able to fix this. Likely knocking Dietrich out in the process but a small price to pay when trying to protect her clan. Nodding she followed, needing to stay calm but with every sound her entire body jumped. Soft gasps escaped from between her lips at the sound of a door being opened and closed. Head whipping back she looked to D, moved a hand and gripped the back of his shirt. If he looked backward towards her she’d gesture behind them. “I heard something, a door open and close.” It couldn’t have been the cellar. It sounded in a different direction but for all she knew it could have been. “do you think they found out about us.” By now her hands fisted his shirt, fear causing her body to respond nervously and instinctually seeking reassurance. “Please tell me you aren’t like that creepy man from the movie saw. Please tell me you aren’t just fucking with me.”

Levity in such a grave situation was exceedingly short-lived, as was only natural. A simple yet fleeting moment which proved meaningless upon the surface, but proved different within. Hope was something fragile and weak, a thin thread taking little more then a snip to disappear. Reinforcing it with a gesture as simple as a mild joke was paramount to a victory. Small, but a victory nonetheless. It seemed reinforced moments later when the question rang within his ears regarding their chance or likelihood of getting out. “Thanks to you crawling through that vent…I know we will” There may have been some chance still but it definitely had improved since shimmying through the duct. Despite words, inwardly Dietrich was anything but certain, though he was assuredly going to do his best, better then his best to make it a certainty. The panic in her voice as it raised pitches only to lower naturally while she reigned in the panic and fear simply had Dietrich watching her, waiting. She seemed capable of swallowing down emotions should the situation require it, and that hard almost unemotional stare simply waited for the panic to subside, for the surety of his words to burrow in. Gaze swiveled from one ‘prisoner’ to the next before returning to her. Lips parted to make a very keen statement on their ability to help them required them not ending up dead themselves.

Instead while he had set pace towards the door the opposite only to have his shirt tugged along with the faintest of sounds he’d attributed to little more then a possible rat. Used to discerning small details from a lifeless scene, and even moreso from a living one, Dietrich studied her face for any measure of falseness to provided claims. “You’re sure?” How the fuck had she even heard and been able to distinguish what the sound was, when it had barely even registered to his alert brain. Chalking it off to heightened senses due to fear or some such nonsense however unlikely before squatting and shaking his head in dismissal of her question. “No…there were no cameras in the hallway, and ive not seen any here either. It could be anything…” The shirt she had been fisting against his back normally had a very soft, comforting feeling resting against the flesh of his torso. Covered in muck and grime was another story entirely. “Never seen the movie…I deal with enough horrible things every day. No need to watch it at home too…” One thing about the big city was the fact that bad things happened to good people every day, and some of it sticks with you. “We’re going to be fine, now be quiet before someone hears you” It was the first time that he’d issued a command with an air of authority, ignoring her hold upon his shirt as they crouched down and came close to one of the swinging doors, peeking up and through the dirty glass once more just in time to come face to face with some guy who seemed just as surprised to see him that came to investigate some sort of noise.

It would appear she had heard correctly, one of the pawns of whatever was going on coming to check on their capture? Their stock? Who knew, but without hesitation Dietrich reared back and smashed his foot into the door, the solid metal slamming into the guy sending him onto his back and pushing past without hesitation. At the moment Dietrich appeared not a cop at all, no hesitation issued before the rusty pipe connected with the mans head, preventing him from getting up. Leaning forward two fingers was placed upon his neck, still feeling a pulse despite the blood coming from his head. Looking from side to side, he then turned back to make sure she was alright. Pulling the cuffs he’d removed from his own wrists early and with a booted foot kicking the man onto his stomach, cuffs were placed about wrists and locked in place only for one of the arms of his shirt to be ripped free and formed into a gag. Just in case he woke up. With that problem taken care of, Dietrich waited a few seconds to hear if the commotion had been heard by anyone else, looking behind her with a reassuring nod “You okay?” If she was, his pace would increasing, hurrying down the hallway towards the far end where the exit hopefully was, pulling her this time by the wrist.

Every sound, smell and movement seemed heightened. Instinct and fear battled franticly against one another. Hyperawareness filtered through her at an alarming rate making her skin crawl and her body jump at every sound and smell. The very nature of her own being screamed to get out and leave and yet honor held her still for several heartbeats. These people were not her pack though they didn’t deserve what was happening to them. No one deserved to be treated like a lab rat. Aspen was too much in shock to narrow her eyes in his direction for the rebuke from his comment earlier. In the commotion everything seemed to move faster then she’d expected. One second they were fine, and within the span of a heartbeat someone assaulted them. Gasping, Aspen stepped backward. Fight had never been drilled into her behavior, rather all shifters were taught to walk away. Knowing that way of thinking wasn’t the best way, it had aided in their survival over the years. Silence followed in the wake of their calamity. For a good twenty seconds nothing was said as they both strained to listen for any approaching footsteps. All that greeted them was silence. Breathing in slowly, carefully as if she feared each breath might be loud enough to alert nearby people. This was bigger then she’d originally thought and something her pack alpha would likely have to learn about. No way would she allow a human to snoop around. It was heard enough keeping their secrets before, this would make everything almost impossible. “I’m fine.” she said, her voice a little shaken. “Are you?” Concerned eyes slide slowly over his body, face and finally resting on the rip in his cloths. “Lets hope we don’t get attacked anymore, you would soon be bare.” Aspen smiled nervously, the ill-timed joke washing over her lips even as it soaked heavily with fear. Taking a breath she inhaled, allowing the scent to fill her mind and giving her an idea of who was close enough to be a threat and who wasn’t. “Let’s go this way.” But as he pulled her in a direction Aspen acquiesced. Following beside him, the sound of his feet hitting the floor seemed far too loud but that was likely the rushing in her ears. Almost at once Aspen pulled him into a room, opening the door and closing it with a soft almost inaudible snick. Seconds later the heavy sound of steps grew louder before fading. “I thought I heard something.” She said, hoping that would help answer how she managed to get them out of the way so quickly. Casting him a sheepish smile Aspen held back for only a moment longer then said. “It’s clear, I think they are gone. Come on.” Turning she headed out the door, not giving him enough time to question her nearly impossible feat. Down the hall they moved, opening this door and that but without knowing where they were they could be walking further into the building rather than out.

Dietrich despised the fact for the lack of a better word that even on days assigned to be away from the calamity that remained human existence, he somehow seemed to repeatedly get pulled into the dark tragedy occurring generally unseen beneath the glossy existence of normal society. “Im good, If I end the night shirtless but otherwise in good condition, id be thankful for it” It was clearly forced, the slight smirk which curved lips. Instinctually, he wanted nothing more then to radio in for backup but considering the current situation it seemed impossible, the quick pat down he performed on the person ambushed revealed no phone that could be utilized. The question remained and consistently looped through his brain was a simple one. Why was he here? What did he have in common with the others that were kidnapped? Dietrich had never met her, nor the people within the cages, and he’d not worked any kidnapping cases as of late. Oftentimes the best leads were gathered by finding some sort of commonality. So lost within those thoughts he’d momentarily lost track of his surroundings only to be basically yanked into a room. Brows knitted together and lips tightened as if contemplating delivering a scornful admonishment only for the heavy sound of steps which were barely noticeable fell across his ears muting his objections. It was with this, that for the first time since their initial time waking that Dietrich leveled a long, almost hard look if it wasn’t for the quizzical expression provided to her. Had he been so oblivious he’d simply not noticed? It was possible, but doubtful, lower lip being pulled between rows of white to be chewed upon in silent thought despite the fact she had headed out the door, he lagged behind. Shoving aside the nagging suspicion eventually that not all things were as they appeared on the surface, he decided to stash it away for further examination later. “Lets hope whoever that was doesn’t run across the guy we left cuffed and gagged…” It was a whisper that considering the distance she should not of been able to hear especially with the softness provided, little more then a minor test to confirm his suspicion that she at least had exceptional hearing. One of the benefits about modern hospitals were the square layout which made it easy to find an exit. Old, condemned hospitals seemed a veritable maze as was proven with the continuous open and closing of doors as they struggled to make sense of the layout. The door which had light pushing through the window was opened as they pushed through, putting them into a lobby that seemed overgrown with plants and debris. (edited)

Head tilted back, looking up multiple floors through a collapsed part of a ceiling, the moonlight pushing through in stark contrast to the darkness. Jogging over to the wall where an old schematic or map of the building was posted to provide employees some semblance of direction. Tearing it free from the wall, Dietrich stepped over to the opening in the room, trying to utilize the moonlight to read the schematic, squinting harshly against the paper as a frustrated sigh echoed from his lips. “Its too dark, I can’t make out the lines…f…” Fuck is what he was going to say, just before reigning in his irritation and looking to her once more. “This place is a maze, every time we seem to be making progress, I feel like we get turned around…”

Maze didn’t even seem to come close. Every smell within the building seemed drenched in chemicals. The faint scent of vomit, blood, smoke, and bodily waste was saturated with bleach. No matter how hard she tried Aspen couldn’t get a good feel for the place. Making one or two wrong turns. In time they would figure out their forgotten prisoners were missing. In time they would find them if the two didn’t find a way out and fast. But where to turn? Every path seemed only to make things worse. “the longer we take to get out the more likely we will be caught.” She murmured softly for his ears alone. Fifteen minutes passed, door after door opened and closed as they sought for an exit that maybe didn’t even exist. Muscles burned, sweat beading along her body which only added to her own discomfort. Aspen sucked in a breath, pulling the air through her lungs until if burned. Only then did she exhale. Their steps were faint, slow progression without even knowing if they were progressing. All of it left her feeling unease and nervous. One final door and darkness seeped past with a fresh wave of a cool, crisp night air. Aspen gulped in air. Inhaling and exhaling in an effort to get the chemical smell from her nose and out of her system. Lips parted, that velvet tongue darting out to lick over plush full lips. The breeze that ruffled her hair was delightful, helping to dry the sweat from her skin. She breathed in again before turning back to him, a wide enigmatic smile etched along her beautiful face. Wide pale blue eyes shining with excitement shown easily in her expression. “lets go…” She said, jubilation coloring the cadence of her voice. With one tug she pulled him in a direction, towards the woods, away from the building and out into the darkened canopy of the forest. Aspen moved quickly, adrenaline reinvigorating her body with every step. So close to the darkness, freedom a mere yard away. So close were they that she barely heard the sound of footsteps, a yell and the attack as someone slammed into Dietrich. Inside she screamed the word ‘fuck’ outside her body moved and reacted of its own accord. Morphing into a large predatory creature. Low growl emanating from between powerful jaws that snapped at the air moments before making contact with the two men. Aspen collided with the unknown male, latching her jaws onto the man’s arm hard enough to taste blood as it pooled into her mouth. With a massive shake she brought the man to the ground making sure not to hurt Dietrich. Another shake of her massive head had the man nearly crying out in pain. Just as he was about to scream further Aspen pulled back long enough to bite his neck and shake. In seconds the man lay limb. Moving away from the dead man the large animal looked at Dietrich with a soft expression within the deep forest green eyes. Before he could react or likely run screaming Aspen shifted back. Naked before him she stood upright and lifted her hands. “Please don’t freak out… please. I don’t have time to explain, lets go!” Lights snapped on from behind them and with one shove she pushed him forward urging him to start running.
