Falling in line behind him Aspen let the momentary smile tug each corner of her lips up while soundlessly mouthing his name. His name was uttered under her brother four times before exiting into the upper section of the place and into the hallway she’d came through moments ago. By now that smile she’d given long since faded, replaced with a determined expression, with knitted brows. Every sound, movement, smell and taste funneled through her senses, easily processed and shifted where it was needed most. Such as the scent of bleach far off to the right.
Keeping close enough to have his six, Aspen moved with relative soundless ease. Hips moving naturally back and forth with each step. “D… do you think we will get out?” She couldn’t stop the fearful note from creeping into her voice. A fractured sound hitched somewhere in the middle, ending on a slightly strangled pitch. This wasn’t who she knew herself to be, fear reclaimed the parts of herself she’d never known existed. Trepidation seeped into her soul, making it difficult at times to think clearly. He was use to this, his cop put him in dangerous situations on the regular. Watching cop shows and movies couldn’t be completely off base… right?
For nearly four minutes the two navigated slowly, silently down the halls and through one area after another until a familiar scent assaulted her senses. Instinctually she knew what lay within the cages. Every hair on the back of her neck stood on end. The breath she’d held burned her lungs. Aspen studied the people, their faces shadowed in the darkened interior but their scent… fuck she knew their scent. Not all of them but most were familiar. Every part of her rebelled at the idea of leaving them. “We can’t leave them… we can’t abandon them to this. What if he comes back and kills them. They can’t die here.” Her voice flooded the confines of her throat in a panicked whisper.
Knowing he spoke the truth didn’t help ease her guilt. She breathed in, peering back at them. Still, near lifeless save for the even breaths filling their lungs. Aspen closed her eyes and forced herself to move on, to follow his lead. If only she could get outside, find a phone, call her father, or the clan alpha she’d be able to fix this. Likely knocking Dietrich out in the process but a small price to pay when trying to protect her clan. Nodding she followed, needing to stay calm but with every sound her entire body jumped. Soft gasps escaped from between her lips at the sound of a door being opened and closed.
Head whipping back she looked to D, moved a hand and gripped the back of his shirt. If he looked backward towards her she’d gesture behind them. “I heard something, a door open and close.” It couldn’t have been the cellar. It sounded in a different direction but for all she knew it could have been. “do you think they found out about us.” By now her hands fisted his shirt, fear causing her body to respond nervously and instinctually seeking reassurance. “Please tell me you aren’t like that creepy man from the movie saw. Please tell me you aren’t just fucking with me.”
