An endless expanse of beauty and death. That’s what space was, and endless trap to simply gaze at before inevitably being sucked into its void and becoming nothing more than a small part of its wide domain. The Enduring was not a ship that could so easily Marvel at it, but the observation deck allowed for just a glimpse of it nonetheless. James stood upon it, eyes looking out the large windows for a moment as he held a ceramic cup in his hand, vapors rising up and out from the coffee which had most assuredly reached a molten temperature by now. There was an exhale as he gestured out towards it.
“Serena. How long has it been?” There emerged a tri-tone chime as a cold female voice belonging to the ship’s AI immediately piped in.
“It has been twenty-seven days, fourteen hours, seven minutes, and two seconds since we last heard from friendly forces.”
A frown formed on James’s face. They were being escorted of course, here to spread the peaceful mission of exploring the galaxy’s vast and unique new frontiers. Then the attack came and their escorts moved to fend off the would-be aggressors, leaving them to emergency jump somewhere unknown. Protocol, of course, dictated they remained where they were while sending out a buoy for their escorts to pick up, but they never came.
A sip was taken from his coffee and James found himself once more staring out at the window. He could settle here for a few more minutes until someone needed him. After all, it didn’t seem like anyone was coming.
