Calloused hands strained at the ropes he was holding onto, the taught wiry muscles in his arms feeling like they were going to be ripped off as his feet planted on the wet slippery wooden floors. Lightning crackled and stuck at the sea attacking his senses while rain soaked his body to the bone. He shivered from the cold; his clothes drenched while the strong winds whipped away the last of his warmth every time his body heated up. He wasn’t expecting to miss the humid heat of the evening, but he really did. He was covered in sweat before, tanned from the rays of the sun but now. A wrong move could be their last. “Keep those lines taught, if we stay in this storm, we are not going to make it.” Their captain called out from behind the wheel his thick arms straining to keep the wheel in the same place while the majority of the crew including him was working to keep the mast drawn. Things were bad right now, but they’ve been worse. He still remembered that storm from a year ago when the mast was hit by lightning and the hit rocks at the start putting holes in the hull. He had spent hours that night with a bucket emptying the water that got in through the cracks until his arms felt like they were going to drop off. But they survived that, and he knew they were going to survive this, he felt a wetness drip down his hands from where he was gripping the rope the liquid being too warm to be water. Sweat mixed with blood he was sure, tomorrow he would be aching he knew it they would all be, but he probably had it the worst. His normal position was not work the sail, no his role when there wasn’t storms and all hands on deck were required was up in the birds nest, at the very top of the sail, where most of the others lacked the dexterity to reach his job was to keep an eye out for land, for other ships, for rocks they would need to ignore. For storms, but as the captain said nature was like a lady.

You would never grow tired of exploration, every new sight, every new understanding breath takingly beautiful. But understanding a woman fully was like knowing what would happen a month from now. While Kai didn’t have much experience was the fairer sex at least not in dating them he had quickly found the same love for the sea, for nature as his captain. Even if this wasn’t how he expected his life to turn out he wouldn’t want things any other way. Suddenly the wood they were standing on gave, damaged too much by the elements it couldn’t take everyone's weight sending everyone but him falling down into the crews' quarters. With Kai being the only one nimble enough to keep his footing his legs stretching as he stood on the two edges of the cracked wood. And that was when he realised the mistake he made. Without any help he couldn’t keep the rope in place and so it pulled him forcing him to the edge of the boat his sides smashing into the wooden railing with enough force to drive the air from his lungs. He heard the captain yell something, but he couldn’t hear the man properly as he felt himself tip forwards everything tipped as if gravity was reversed and for a moment, he felt weightless then his head hit off the wall of the ship and everything went black.

Karinne laid on the hot, dry sand. She could only imagine it was some time in the late afternoon but she had no way of knowing. The seasons didn’t change much on this island, and day lasted longer than the night. The community was very close knit. There was a leader and his wife, their children and more families. Karinne didn’t belong to any family. She felt like an outsider, even though she had her friends. Her parents got lost at sea when they sailed for supplies. No one was ever able to find a trace of what exactly happened to them. She was young when it happened so she doesn’t remember too much, but she was raised by the island’s “Grandma”, an elderly lady who also didn’t have any family left but took care of everyone as if they were her own. This island was always fruitful and beautiful. The trees were green and the sand golden. She took up her own handmade clothing shop to trade for what she wanted or needed. It wasn’t exactly modern but it was enough for her and everyone else there. As much as she wanted to travel, there was no way to. She couldn’t touch the water away from home, and she couldn’t talk to humans. They must never know the secret of the village. They could survive under the water- as merpeople. Some clouds lurked in the distance and before long there was a thunderstorm. It was nothing dangerous but the waters were choppy and the rain produced a wall of water. Everyone hid inside their homes until it was determined to be safe. This time wasn’t until the next morning.

He shivered as his body fell through the water, as night was already in full effect his sleeping body felt the cold fully. It was so warm this morning, the storm was caused by the sudden shift in temperature after all that he wasn’t dressed for the cold. Not that it would have done him much good. He didn’t have any fully waterproof clothes. Whatever he would have worn would have been soaked from the water now and freezing cold. The torn trousers he was dressed in, worn from use and stained in blood at parts. The one good thing about being knocked out was that he couldn’t feel any pain. He couldn’t feel the way that the salt water made the cuts on his skin burn in pain. He couldn’t feel the way that he choked his lungs filled with salt water. But in the end, he was lucky. The he didn’t sink to the bottom of the ocean. Instead, the water currents carried him along until he reached a nearby island. The high tide carrying his body onto golden sands, where he would be found unmoving save for the rise and fall of his chest. His hands were covered in blood and cuts., his chest marred in purple bruises light cuts that continued to bleed littering his chest, his legs were covered in similar scratches and bruises. @Deleted User

Karinne always woke to the sunrise. It was as if her body slept on the same clock every night. She rolled out of her blanket and stood up, stretching her arm and legs. She tiptoed out of her small cabin and saw the leader of the village running from the far end of the island to the rows of cabins. He went to a tent and came back out before going back in the same direction. She stepped off the ledge of her front door and into the sand, walking towards him before she felt a quick hand yank on her arm. Upon turning around, it was Grandma. “You do not follow that man. You must stay here, where it’s safe.” She told her, with a disturbed expression. “What’s going on? At least tell me if I can’t go see.” Strange things occurred on the island but very rarely. Things were normally peaceful. Grandma leaned in closer and lowered her voice. “A stranger was found on the shore right before the sun came up. We think this wasn’t a mistake. He could be a human.” Karinne just stared at Grandma, unsure of what to say. The villagers were warned about humans. They couldn’t be allowed to find out the secrets of the merpeople. This place was home to them and everyone knew that humans would just try to study them, and falsify science to be able to adapt to underwater life like they could. Fortunately for everyone they had no unusual appearance until reaching the water. “They took the intruder to the medical cabin but after that, we have to make him leave.” @All time Jack

What he felt when he woke up was pain, the muscles in his chest and stomach. It wasn’t anything too bad, nothing that some rest wouldn’t fix but that didn’t help the pain he was in right now. His chest and stomach heavily bruised, his hands and arms stung from the rope burn that hurt his hands, and most of all his head hurt. It was a dull steady pain, that he just couldn’t ignore. It was the kind of pain that he just couldn’t stand. When he woke up he was alone in an unfamiliar room, his eyes slowly opening as he made himself sit up and look around quickly noticing that he didn’t recognise anything. The last thing he remembered was falling into the ocean, he thought that he was going to die. Maybe he did. Was he in heaven? Hell? He felt like he was too sore to be dead. Maybe someone found him. He only looked around for a second before he pulled himself to his feet only stumbling slightly before he was off sneaking out of the door a small yawn leaving his lips. Living on a ship was perfect for him, working in the mines as a child had led to him hating being inside. He liked to be outdoors, in nature, no matter the weather. Sometimes out at sea when the weather wasn’t too bad, when it wasn’t too hot or too cold, he would sleep outside on the starboard with blankets under his back and the stars in his eyes. It was perfect to him, the only way to make it better in his mind was to spend the night with a beautiful lady, especially a nude one. He was a simple person after all. It wasn’t difficult for him to leave, even as he walked out barefoot, he wasn’t all that bothered that he was barefoot. It didn’t matter to him that save for a pair of pants someone must have changed him into he was mostly nude. His bare chest on full display for anyone that looked. Not much was important enough to keep him from going out. The moment he stepped outside, and he felt the warm rays of the sun on his body he felt revitalised, his spirits lifting. He started to walk at a steady pace, not caring where he ended up, he just wanted to explore his mind moving a mile a minute, so focused he didn’t notice her. If he was paying more attention, he probably would have noticed her, he would have avoided her but instead he felt his body collide with hers and the impact reminded him of how weak his body had become. His legs wobbled almost making him fall over. But luckily, he managed to recover as he took a small step away from her and looked back at her. And then his eyes widened as he saw her, his eyes looking into hers. His features scanning along her face. “Beautiful.” He couldn’t help but murmur. @Deleted User

Karinne was sitting on the sand, feeling the warmth and grit on her soft skin. The sun beamed down harshly and water rippled, splashing gently on the shore. Later that day she planned on fishing, if the weather would allow for it. She tried to get the mystery man out of her head. She didn’t want to let it get to her- Grandma sometimes tried to instill fear in the unknown to make her stay away. She rolled over in the sand and stretched out. Defeat. She quickly got up and dusted off the best that she could, and made her way towards the cabins and homes. Her feet dragged through and her purple hair fell behind her shoulders. No one was around. Bump. Karinne stumbled back and landed on her bottom. She looked up and there he was. How did she miss this? How was she so careless enough to run into the dangerous stranger? Slowly she stood up and took a long step backward. She was not supposed to interact with him. “No… what are you doing here?” She whispered with a harsh tone. Rather than get noticed by the guards and his outcome be worse, she was trying to figure out how to get him away from plain sight. She gripped his wrist with a strength she didn’t know she had, and yanked him towards the back of the medical hut. This was hidden. She didn’t know what kind of mercy washed over her, but maybe he deserved a chance to live and explain himself. @All time Jack

What surprised him most when he bumped into the stranger was how beautiful she was, her pretty purple hair looked so soft so nice to touch, he found himself wanting to run his hands down her hair, he thought of cupping her face and the clothes she was wearing. He felt like she would be able to pull his gaze in a lot of things with her looks alone but he definitely liked the two-piece dress she was wearing. Her cotton top looked more like a top, covering the most intimate areas but still showing a lot of her creamy skin. The only thing covered completely were her legs and hips not that he was in a position to complain with much of her midriff he could see. Her attire made a lot of sense, with the area they were in. While severe weather could make things very chilly especially during the night, the weather during the day was such that you could probably walk around fully nude and not feel cold. And she definitely didn’t look like she was cold. He felt bad for accidently making her fall over, he was about to walk over to her and help her up but she started to get up before he could and he had a feeling like she didn’t trust him. That feeling was made more certain with the step she took away from him following by the harsh question. Before he could answer her though he felt her grip his wrist and tug him along.

Not knowing where he was and not wanting to offend the woman, he had bumped into he let her pull him along noticing that she took him back to the tent that he had woken up in. It was weird he really thought that he was going to die last night. He had whoever brought him here to thank for keeping him alive. “I’m part of a crew.” he started to say before he stood up straighter and shook his head “not like a pirate crew or anything like that. We we’re delivering cargo when we got caught in the storm, part of the mast broke while we were trying to steer out of it and it kind of threw me over board.” He told her honestly before he moved in close to her his hands trying to go to her body, one of them trying to wrap around her waist while the other sought to cup her face with bandaged hands. “You fell when we bumped into each other, you're not hurt are you?” He asked her softly his gaze raking her body quickly for injuries.

Karinne was watching the stranger with an offended expression as he explained himself. She wasn’t injured at all. It wasn’t natural for folk of her kind to sweat- even though the climate was generally hot and full of humidity. It was something they had been accustomed to. Her flowing hair brushed past her shoulders and her outfit was snug in just the right places. She made most of her clothing herself. “Listen,” her tone was still just above a whisper, “You need to leave. Now.” It was out of fear for the safety of the man. The footsteps of guards made the damp sand audibly squish nearby. Thunder crackled over their heads off in the distance. Karinne peeked around the corner where she knew she couldn’t be seen and saw the men pacing the common area. Handcuffs! This idiot would be remnants of what he used to be. The once pale blue sky had now become masked with black and grey clouds. The rumbles of the thunder clapped louder along with a few flickers of lightning. The guards decided together to flee for their shelter and she froze in a panic. Where was she supposed to hide this fool? The only reasonable option would be to run as fast as they could off the main land but there may be unruly animals - and the trees could only do so much to protect them from lightning. She didn’t want to reveal her true identity either. She couldn’t bring him back to her home. This would be too obvious. “Just.. go this way!” She pointed toward a cluster of the trees that began the dense rainforest. It was their only hope. @All time Jack

Why she seemed to have such a grouchy look on her face he wasn’t sure. Maybe she just had resting bitch face, or she woke up on the wrong side of the bed. He didn’t think that he had done anything to anger her too much. She was beautiful though and he didn’t know where he was, so he decided to stick with her. Her words made him shrug as he hummed back at her. “And go where?” He asked her softly not sure where to go. Even so he did pick up on her urgency even if just a little as he crouched down to look around. It seemed like not getting found was in his best interest. He was finding it so hard not to yawn and close his eyes, he was exhausted his body sore and achy still from having to fight the storm and from the sounds of thunder it was clear that the storm was going to come back tonight. He just hoped that his crew would be okay. They would have probably found somewhere to dock but would they be able to find him? Deciding to just go with the woman who pointed to the cluster of trees he followed her quickly catching up to her and once he was close enough to her, he reached forward to gently take her hand into his own before he playfully tugged her along with him. “Come on beautiful.” He told her teasingly. "I wouldn't want you to catch a cold. Although if you do I wouldn't mind nursing you back to health for a quick kiss." He winked @Deleted User

“I promise, you don’t want them to see you.” Karinne kept a firm grasp on the stranger’s wrist as she guided him along. She wasn’t sure of the exact direction they needed to go but wouldn’t stop until she knew they were safe. Eventually there was a clearing. The sound of footsteps vanished entirely and patters of rain began to fall on the sand and leaves around them. She quickly shuffled and sat beside a large tree trunk, its width was much wider than hers. Green palm leaves fanned out of the top and she was dry. Thankfully. Karinne was worried about them being found but it was almost certain that they lost any sight of the guards. They had traveled rather far. She glanced at the man, and back at her arms. He’d probably find her truth out anyway if they were to be stuck here together. “You need to sit. Take some weight off your legs, and you’ll feel better soon.” She tried to sound reassuring. It was peaceful. For once she didn’t feel like there was any pressure of anyone criticizing or watching her every move. But for now she had to decide what she was going to do with this man. Preferably find a way to get him off the island, and back home. @All time Jack

"What's so bad about them seeing me? Are you sure that you just don't want to get me alone beautiful?" He asked her teasingly as he let her continue to lead him the rain starting to fall as they want into a clearing and found shelter from the elements but he lagged behind slightly letting the rain hit his hair a little making him smile more widely. Not a lot of people liked the rain but he loved it ever since he was a child he loved every form of water he encountered from still lakes to the stormy ocean waves. It was why he spent so long working at sea that and it was his only option at the time. The island really was pretty he had noticed full of luscious greens and vibrant plants all with different shades while they walked he picked up a vibrant purple balloon flower before he found the treetrunk that she had lead him to in the clearing. "I'm feeling better already sitting out on a tree next to the most beautiful woman that I have ever seen how could I not feel great?" He told her softly before he took a seat down onto the trunk next to her and reached for her with his free hands putting down the flower for now. His hands gently gripped her hips, arms wrapping around her waist before he picked her up off of the log only to then set her down onto his lap. "Why are you helping me though? I think it's only right that I thank you." He whispered into her ear his lips brushing against her earlobe as one of his arms stayed wrapped around her waist as the other retrieved the flower and gently tucked it into her hair. @Deleted User

“Okay, I owe you a fair explanation. Now that we’re alone. We’re not.. they don’t..” Karinne sighed. She didn’t know how to tell a complete stranger about the one secret she had. It was her identity, and amongst her friends and family she didn’t need to hide it. “You’re a human. I’m not. Us, on this island, are not. You can’t be here because they will hurt you very badly, or take your life. Nobody knows that this village exists,” she continued, “It’s a secret. No one from the outside can be trusted to keep it. I don’t even know if I can trust you.” Karinne felt her body tense as he grasped her by the waist, feeling their bodies move closer together. Her cheeks burned in embarrassment. “Please take me seriously. You’re in trouble if we ever get caught here.” @All time Jack

"I wouldn't really say that you owe me anything." He whispered back to her quickly as he heard her words listening to her sigh but he made no attempt to get her to stop taking. In reply to her saying that she wasn't a human he couldn't help but raise a brow. They had only just met but this seemed important to her he didn't want to make her think that he didn't believe her but she seemed human to him. The softness of her neck definitely felt like skin. And when he saw the way that she reacted to his touch he couldn't help but smile more widely enjoying the pretty blush that lit up her cheeks his arm staying wrapped around her hips snugly. "Sorry your just so beautiful that I can't help myself." He told her softly before he pecked her chesk softly. "So if your not human then what are you?" "If you tell me that you'd an angel I think that I would believe you." He whispered rubbing soft circles into her stomach beforenhe leaned in and let his lips brush against her ear. "But for it to really set in maybe you should show me. I'm a bit of a visual learner." @Deleted User

Karinne blinked, her expression fell flat. “You.. want me to show you?” She nudged herself off the man’s lap and stood. Rough sand coated the back of her legs. Raindrops pattered on the leaves above and thunder clapped in the distance. “You’re right. I don’t owe you anything.” He had a pretty smile. The closeness in the way he held her was comforting- something she hadn’t felt in a long time. As she backed away carefully, Karinne held out her arms. The drops trickled across her skin. Lightning flickered with only a minute to spare between each flash. The storm would not let up soon. Scales of a vibrant blue and turquoise hue began to creep onto the backs of both hands, each one having a spectacular shimmer. Her curly hair that fell in an unruly mess down her shoulders began to smooth as it got drenched by the rainfall. The entire surface of her skin would not be covered- they formed the shape of waves. This was it. The secret she was holding onto. It shouldn’t have been so easy to blindly trust a man she’d known for a day. The thought of her family looking to find her lingered in the back of her mind as she stood vulnerable in front of him. But it was too late. They had run. @All time Jack

He tilted his head as he saw her expression fall flat worried that he had accidently upset as he heard her words and when she got off his lap, he was quick to miss her closeness part of him wanting to just wrap his arms around her and pull her back onto his lap. Still, he made himself behave as he stayed seated looking up at her. “You really don’t have to, but I would like that yes.” He told her softly his words muffled lightly by the lightning as the rain drops danced against her soft skin and when he saw the transformation his eyes widened as pretty shades started to cover her skin partially and his response once, he got over his surprise was a simple one. “You really are so beautiful.” He whispered to her softly “there’s just one thing. Your explanation doesn’t change anything for me. I just want to kiss you so badly. Do you want me to kiss you? To touch you?” He asked her softly his eyes looking into hers before he raised his hands and light patted his lap. “Come back to me if you want this too.” Everyone he knew always told him that he needed to think more before he acted, that he needed to think more before he opened his mouth, but he just argued that he was only just living, and you can only live once. It was better to regret the things you did then the things you didn’t do in his mind. “I don’t care about any danger right now, if you’d let me right now all I want to do is hold you close and learn how it feels to kiss you.” @Deleted User

Karinne paused. Kiss? She couldn’t feel certain about kissing someone she just met. “I don’t’- I can’t. At least I don’t think I can.” She mumbled, feeling the pattering rain splash against her skin. The breeze was warm and humidity prickled the air. She examined his features and his genuine gestures. She found herself wondering about all the important things she risked leaving behind. It was already a danger to have left home. Had they even found out that she was missing? What exactly would happen then? Her gaze fell upon his eyes, and his posture was inviting. It was an appealing thought. There was no time in her daily life for intimacy. She was either working or asleep. Never did it cross her mind. One more flickering strike from the storm clouds touched the treetops close by. It ignited the leaves and quickly simmered out, leaving a trail of smoke. Karinne beckoned the man quickly without speaking a word and knew that they had to keep moving. They were lost. There were no set paths or directions this deep into the forest. She didn’t know where they would end up or how far they would go, but the clearing would no longer be safe to wait it out. In the distance was a cave with an entry coated in moss and tree branches. @All time Jack
