Unlike the empty suite where Jeff had dropped his bags off earlier, the dorm was now bustling with activity when he returned. Paul was the first to spot him, greeting him at the doorway. "Bet you weren't expecting me as a roommate, were ya?" Paul grinned as he put an arm around Jeff, bringing him in close. Paul was a big guy, and Jeff grimaced as he wrestled out of Paul's grip. "Yeah yeah, there's usually a couple surprises in there, aren't there," Jeff quipped.
Jeff looked up to see his other suitemates, Pete and Chuck. They had trained together before, but other than that he hadn't interacted with the other two much. The conversation quickly turned to discussion of their schoolmates, as teenage boys conversation often does.
"I was down at the gates this morning, there's a new freshman that's really cute," remarked Chuck.
"Psh," remarked Paul, "Jeff's got his eye on another junior already," elbowing Jeff in the ribs.
"We were just talking, ok? No big deal."
"Oh? Who's the lucky girl?", Pete inquired.
Jeff stayed silent, but Paul answered for him. "It's that girl Jess. Water fairy. You know they've got all kinds of tri-"
Jeff shoved Paul, interrupting him mid sentence. "Hey hey! Just kidding around," Paul said, backing down. "What about courses. Orientation was pretty intense today."
"For sure," said Pete, "I hear there's some kind of threat they're not telling us about. You know how the teachers like to keep things quiet."
"Well, there's always a rumor that there's still more Burned Ones out there. Who knows if thats the case, if it's not I guess we're just doing all this training to look good." The boys laughed, and continued their conversation into the night.
Eventually, they all settled into bed. Jeff closed his eyes and began to dream.
