The crunching of gravel was the only sound to be heard through the darkness of night. She didn't know what time of night it was, but judging from the moon, she'd say at least 11pm or so. She had learned this from her late older brother 10 years ago when they were out scavenging in the woods. Those very same woods she was wandering through tonight. It was pitch black, except for the glow of the moon lighting her way and a small makeshift torch in hand. Despite it being very dark, Nikki could figure out a bit on how to navigate through the trees. Faint hooting of an owl up above, and the distant howl of wolves in the distance singing their melancholy song to the moon above. She was alone. Ever since Evan passed away 2 weeks ago, it made it a bit difficult to cope with the fact that the last of her family was truly gone. That she was on her own. A dud. In this current world, humans were given powers. Scientists found a way to alter the genome of Humans and created a way to make them better. Humans were creatures of greed, always wanting more and thus it erupted into the Great War that wiped out almost all of Humanity. At least; this is what her family told her. She was only 3 at the time when the Great War broke out. Now living in this world for 23 years, Nikki often wondered what the old world was like, before the war. Before the apocalypse. Before greed. The footsteps started to recede a bit as the light in front of her was coming up to an old cabin. It wasn't grand by any means, just a dinky little home, probably for someone who wanted to get away from the city and live on their own. It had suited Nikki just fine. While the cabin on the outside was rugged in appearance, to her it showed memories of her family. Of her growing up here. Nikki set the torch down in the dirt and kicked some of the soil onto it to put it out before walking to the old wooden door and pushed it open. Closing the door behind her and making sure the lock was secure, she reached to the left

of her for something, feeling the top of a table and then something metal. Moving her hand to pick up the candle holder, she reached into her pocket where she had stashed what she had found today and lit the candle with a small lighter. Who would have thought that something so small and everyday in the past would intrigue her today. Nikki had found out about it earlier today while searching through an old car. Nearly singed her hair discovering the damn thing. Nikki held the candle holder and set the lighter down on the table. While the cabin was dark, features could be seen as she walked around to other parts of the small home to light other candles sitting in areas to give light. The layout of the cabin was as followed: Entering through the front door you were greeted by what would be a living room of sorts, quite small. A glass table with a metal rim and legs, a dusty old green couch and a bookcase that was slightly slanted with an assortment of books on the bottom shelf. The upper shelves seemed to hold little knick-knacks that Nikki had found throughout her frequent searches. Some consisted of a porcelain horse, a small cactus that looked to be dead, and a large amount of polished river rocks in several jars. To the right of the living room was a small kitchen which contained a rundown fridge that was empty. The cabinets seemed to also be bare of any dishware or food. They did hold various materials however like a random extra blanket, utility rope, and even a couple bottles of wine. Almost like she didn't really have a care where things went, just that she wanted them stashed away. Above the kitchen was a even smaller loft that could be accessed by a wooden ladder of to the side. Climbing it, there was room for what looked to be a single bed and dresser. A window looking out to the side of the cabin into the woods. It was mainly covered by a torn curtain.
20:06
Nikki walked towards the ladder after lighting the candles and slowly climbed up, balancing the candle in one hand and climbing with the other. After reaching the top and setting the candle down so she could pull herself up entirely; she made her way towards the dresser and set the candle holder down, the faint glow illuminating off of her light blonde hair. Setting the pack down next to her dresser after pulling out a book from it. She took a seat on her bed, letting the candlelight be the only source of light to read with.

Valdis shouldered his backpack after filling his canteen at a small stream. He was familiar with this area and knew that the water here was safe to drink. Or at the very least, it had been the last time he had traveled this way. Valdis could have resupplied his water at a town that was not too far off, but he avoided towns unless there were absolutely no other options. Valdis had had his fill of being used by others. He was one of the first children to manifest powers after Arther Ingram and Benjamin Kim made their stupid fucking “cure”. They called them the “Children of Power.” Valdis just saw them as the children of ruin. The people at the Organization thought all of the powers the manifested were sooo interesting and wanted to put them all through so many tests. They did not care for a moment what it did to those kids. If it was really science that they were trying to perform, they wouldn’t have made them kill so many times. They wouldn’t have tried to make them into weapons. Eventually the Organization slipped up and Valdis was able to get away. So now, he kept to himself. Valdis kept moving, trying to decide how far he could get before nightfall. If he pushed hard, he could get to the other side of the forest and to a small, dry alcove in a rock outcropping. It was nothing special, but it kept him from the elements. He picked up his pace and set off at a sustainable jog. He kept having an uneasy feeling as if he was being watched, but when he’d look about, there was nothing to see. He tried to remain cautious while on the move.
21:03
It was full nightfall by the time Valdis made it to the alcove. He scrambled up the couple of handholds that led up to it and tossed his bag in and laid down to stare up at the cold stone. He slid his bag underneath his head and shut his eyes, hoping to sleep without the usual nightmares. He laid there for what felt like hours, hearing the sounds of the forest trying to calm his mind. As he lay there, he heard a twig snapping in the distance. Valdis slowly rolled onto his belly and edged himself forward to peak out over the ledge. He could flashlights shining back and forth as a line of individuals made their way towards the outcropping. He counted eight people in the line, with another one walking further ahead leading the way. He could hear the person in front as they drew nearer, “There is a Child of Power somewhere near here, I can sense them. Be ready, they’ve been here for a little bit, the presence lingers.” Valdis felt a sinking feeling in his stomach. If they knew he was here, they would not give up until they had found him. He would have no other choice but to fight. Valdis hoped that they only carried the standard issue stun guns. If any of them had any combat powers, he would be in deep trouble. Valdis slid further back into the alcove and pulled his black cloak from his bag and put it on. Anything to help him blend into the night would be an advantage. The group drew close to where Valdis lay in waiting, just above head height. He waited until the lead man was close enough that he could drop right down in front of him and use him as a human shield. As the man started to turn back to the group to speak, Valdis dropped right in front of him, a long, sharp length of bone ripping through the skin of his forearm. Valdis stabbed the bone straight through the man’s chest and grabbed him, using his body to block the stun shots of the others.
21:03
Valdis ran to his right towards the last man in line. He threw the body of the first man into the midst of the line as he swung his bone blade, slicing through the last man in line's neck. Seven to go he thought to himself. With his left arm, the bones tore through his skin and fused together to form a shield, which he used to block incoming stun shots as he took out the next two people with one broad swing. Five more Valdis smashed in the skull of the next person by bashing him in the face with the shield and then kneeing the next man in the gut, a spike of bone sprouting forth agonizingly from his knee. Three Valdis grabbed at the spur coming from his knee and snapped it off, throwing it directly into the eye socket of the man furthest from him. He dropped in a spurt of blood and a scream. Last two Valdis ducked under the swing of a club held by one of the men and landed a stab up through the man’s chin that left the hardened bone in his right forearm sticking out of the man’s skull. The last person started to scrabble away in fear. In three long bounds Valdis was on top of them, smashing them again and again with his left arm until Valdis was covered in blood and bits of gray matter. He fell back off of the person and what was left of their head. Blood dripped off of him, and he reached over and snapped off the protrusions from his arms, the skin healing itself where the bone had broken though. After a few minutes detached from him, the bones crumbled to dust. Valdis began to cry. He hated killing and the way it made him feel. And then there was all of the pain from the bones as they rapidly grew and tore from his skin. He sat there in the dark, sobbing and hating the world for what it had made him. He stayed there until after the sun had risen, shaking with the tears as the blood grew cold and dried on his skin.
21:03
Eventually, he picked himself back up and forced himself to look through the belongings of the people he had killed, hoping to find any food or things of value. He took what he found and stowed it in his bag and started walking, knowing that a lake was not far off where he could wash away the caked on blood.

Time passed as Nikki sat there on her bed reading. She has changed positions several times throughout the night reading and even more when it was finally time for bed and she had put all the candles out for the night. With no light, it was pitch black. You wouldn't be able to see your own hand in front of your face. That is the world that Nikki knew of. One devoid of technology. While she was born before the Great War started, she lived throughout the chaos that it caused while growing up. She also learned to make do with few things, those few things being the comfort of her books and the family she grew up with. Nikki didn't have any friends growing up. In fact, all she knew was this cabin and her family. Sure, she'd venture out of the woods a couple times a week to seek out things, but she was content where she was. Never had a reason to leave or go elsewhere. The only other place she liked to go was to the lake. It wasn't far from her cabin, maybe half a mile or so down a trail out behind her home. When morning came around, that's where she would sometimes go to relax in the lake or work on any various projects she had for the day. The morning sun arose, but Nikki usually stayed in bed for at least an hour or so due to reading late. Groaning, she sat up and pulled the blanket off of her, swinging her legs over and pushing herself up from the mattress. Running her fingers through her long blonde hair to smooth it out some. Next she bent down to slip her sneakers on before grabbing her bag and heading down the wooden ladder. Turning around and swiftly walking to the front door, the young blonde female unlocked the door before opening it and heading out. Let's see.. I should probably get something for Snow before I head to the lake.. She seems to really like those berries I found last time.. Nikki was lost in thought for a bit as she walked down the small steps of the cabin and around the back of it towards the trail that led down to the lake. She remembere

d briefly passing by several berry bushes a few times whenever she would take this trail. Plus, the berries that she picked always tasted great, so why not share them with Snow? Her blue eyes came upon the shrubs within the halfway point of her walk. It was a decently large group of bushes with small berries clustered together. Elderberries. Perfect. Let's see if I remembered to pick up that container yesterday.. Could use that to put these in.. the female thought to herself as she slung her backpack off and set it down on the ground, unzipping it and digging through it until she found it. A mason jar. Unscrewing the lid of the jar, she held it in one hand while using the other to pick off clusters of berries and dropping them into the jar. She did this until she filled it completely before sealing it back up. Keeping the jar in her hand while zipping the bag back up and putting it back on her shoulders, Nikki continued her walk. She could see the lake within view now and smiled a little. Stopping just at the edge of the woods now before the lake, she looked around, admiring the large body of water before looking up at the trees. "Snow? Snow, where are you?" Nikki called out before stepping out of the woods. After a few moments, there was a faint noise in the distance. A bird call. It was quiet at first but grew louder as it got closer. Then, a white blur flew past her before circling around and landing on the ground in front of the female. It was a white raven. The bird glanced at the girl before cawing again and Nikki grinned, sitting herself down in the grass with the jar in hand. The raven hopped up onto her knee, poking at the jar lid with its beak.

Valdis was exhausted as he walked away from the scene of bloodshed. He considered to himself whether or not the people who he had killed had been specifically looking for him or if they had just been generally searching for Children of Power. Valdis figured that if they had been seeking out him specifically, they would have done a better job planning and perhaps they would have had more specialized hunters. Killing those nine men and women had been too easy. The Organization was familiar with his skills, especially since, up until his escape five years ago, they had been the ones developing him and honing them. Every drop of blood on him could be laid at the feet of the Organization. Valdis regretted the thought that he would no longer be able to safely travel these woods. Once the bodies were found, patrols through the area would almost certainly be a frequent occurrence. Valdis increased his speed to a jog to make up for some of the time lost sitting crying earlier, despite his complete mental and physical exhaustion. The lake was little more than 30 minutes away at a strong jog, but by the time Valdis made it there, he was completely exhausted. Valdis completely undressed and carried his clothes down to the edge of the water and began to wash the blood out of them. The blood had even soaked down to his undergarments, so they came off as well. His naked body shivered in the cool morning air, but it was sunny and Valdis knew that once he spread his clothes out in the sunlight, they should be fairly quick to dry. Valdis was glad that he had been able to get his hands on an outfit made from one of the pre-war materials that were heavily stain resistant, so that he didn’t have to go around with blood stains covering his best traveling clothes. In addition to their stain resistance, his outfit also was made to wick away moisture and dry quickly.

Once each article of clothing was free of blood, he laid the clothes over some of the larger rocks by the water’s edge, hoping that the rocks would hold some of the sun's heat and leave him able to travel soon. Then he walked out into the water to scrub himself clean. In the years since he escaped from the Organization, food was much more scarce, so his actual body weight had dipped, but his body had still matured and broadened with time, though he figured he would always be on the more narrow built side. He used a small, extremely sharp bone spur pushed out from his index finger to remove the patchy scruff that would encroach on his face if left untrimmed. At one point, Valdis had attempted to grow a beard to make himself less recognizable, but it was such a ragged mess that he gave up on it before long. Valdis finished washing himself and left the water to let himself sun dry as well. He grabbed a meal bar that was standard issue for the Organization’s hunters and ate it. They tasted like shit, but it would give him a full day's worth of calories and nutrients, even accounting for the active nature of the hunters’ job. He finished the bar and laid out in the sunlight fully naked, starting to doze while he waited for his clothes to dry.
