Heaven isn’t what most people think it is. No, you don’t grow wings and become an “angel” as people called them. No, you didn’t have to wait in a line to be sorted and judged on whether or not you lived a good enough life to be sent to heaven. And no, God isn’t what most people think he is. There are two parts to heaven. The first is sort of the headquarters, if you could call it that. Normal souls didn’t go there. Only guardian angels did, and God of course. The only beings in heaven that had wings were guardian angels. They were the only ones capable of traveling between heaven and earth, and their sole purpose was to deliver their person to heaven before a demon could take them to hell. Until the proper time, guardian angels are to watch over their person, to protect them from little creatures called imps, who play pranks and cause accidents that had the potential to kill. Once the time comes, the guardian Angel then guides their person to heaven, where a deliverer takes them to the second part, called the Oasis. That is where souls spend their eternity, until reincarnation. Once reincarnated, all memories are lost. Ren was a guardian angel. He had just arrived on earth, taking a form that mortals could see. This way, his wings were hidden, and he acted and looked like a normal person. He was here on an assignment. A wealthy businessman was set to die in 2 days. Until then, he needed to protect him from an early death caused by either imps or demons. Dawning the look of a pale male with long black hair pulled into a loose braid at the back with his front ends out wearing a business suit, he made his way into the building that the man’s business resided in. He made his way up to the counter, speaking with a nice lady as he smiled. “I’m here for an interview, for the manager position.” The lady nodded, buzzing up to the man upstairs, letting him know the interviewee had arrived. Ren had planned this out meticulously. He had a perfect forged resume, identification,

and a whole made up experience to back it up. He was sure the position would be his, and this way, he could stay close. @Vox: Too much Caramel

"You're a liar." He dropped the packet resume to his desk, adjusting himself in his chair. Bjōrn was in that graduating class and had run the images through his mind. This man wasn't there with him. Ren connected with his mortals past memories, a skill guardians held to know their marks better. You aren't applicable for the outreach program, even with your families company in the list.... The explanation came easily, the program providing an easy out. Bjōrn would never had seen him, classes and ceremonies at different times of day between the groups. Bjōrn sighed softly, sliding thin glass lenses on, begrudgingly picking back up the resume. In his distraction, Ren could see him relax slightly and the curse he carried. A spirit twisting in his chest, dormant, degrading his human body. Bjōrn Emerson had been born ill. A baby born too early and too small, and unlike his younger siblings; sick. Just as his father. Just as his grandfather. It was often joked his illness was the curse in exchange for his intelligence. He had graduated from a tiny prestigious college at fourteen, apparently something their informants had latched to trying to play on sympathies. He'd rose to CEO at 22 after his father's death. He was determined to outlive his father's tender age of 30 and was nearly there at 28.... "You would have the duties of taking care of me while at work, and assist me in organizing my health care team and work meetings in arm with my secretary." He slid across a small tablet and a paper packet, "This is your information and pay forms to fill out, as well as your duties and any information to help you. You can start next week." He unlocked the wheels to his chair, gently pushing backwards. He'd had his chair specifically made, high backed and easy to move. He refused to use a motorized chair. He opened his door, motioning Ren out, "Now if you please. You were my last meeting before lunch." He said it deadpan, without a smile. There had been nothing positive in
13:03
his expression the entire meeting, nearly unnerving. There was a motivation in him like a fire, but his curse was quickly dampening it to flickering coals. @certifiedangel

Ren was fairly composed. Any suspicions the other may have had would be easily dispelled. He sat back in his chair, unusually relaxed for someone interviewing for some big CEO. But Ren couldn’t help it. It was too easy. His eyes were half lidded, listening to Bjōrn’s explanation of his jobs duties. Not that he listened to them very well. He was too focused on the spirit writhing around the other man’s chest. Infesting it. Degrading it. It wasn’t the first time Ren had encountered such a situation. He’d guided many a sick human to the other side, and this one was no different. That didn’t stop it from being sad, however. The man was only 28. Ren found it difficult when the souls he carried were far too young to die. He was snapped from his thoughts as a tablet and a paper packet were slid towards him. “Sir.” Ren stood as Bjōrn opened the door for him. “I’d like to take you out to lunch, if you wouldn’t mind. My treat.” Despite Bjōrn’s unnerving nature, Ren’s was soft and caring, with a gentle smile on his face as if he were speaking with an old friend. @Vox: Too much Caramel

"Fine. But I'm driving." He tsked lightly, a half smile across his face. "I'll have to get used to having a secretary again." He chuckled, letting Ren hold the door so he could get out into the main office. His company created computer parts, himself controlling the materials and sales. It was boring, monotonous maths work. He switched out files with the man close to his door, setting them into a pack bag on his lap. "We can ditch the chair downstairs. I mostly use it inside." He explained lightly, leading through the offices for an easier path down, lightly greeting the employees in his offices. At the elevator he set his head back in his seat to catch his breath. Most of his energy got burnt off so quickly he debated not leaving the building. Getting into the elevator he waited for Ren to settle before clicking the button. "I was thinking Soba?" @certifiedangel
Avatar
Ren’s smile only grew as Bjōrn agreed. “You’ll have to get used to having the best one around.” He added to the other male’s statement as he took the door in his hand to let him out. As he walked beside Bjōrn in his chair, he held his hands clasped behind his back. A few of his employees said hello to Ren, who responded with a light wave back. Once in the elevator, he pressed the button for the ground floor with the star beside it, then he leaned down slightly in front of Bjōrn. “Are you alright sir?” His eyes uncontrollably drifted to the spirit inside of Bjōrn’s chest. He wondered how it’d got there.. they didn’t naturally form in humans. “Soba sounds good to me.” He smiled as he stood up straight again, resuming his posture from before. They reached the ground floor and began walking through the lobby. Ren waited patiently for Bjōrn to get up before they headed outside. There was a car parked already waiting for them, having been driven around front by a chauffeur. As they approached, Ren had a gut feeling, suddenly moving his hand up to halt Bjōrn’s walking. Just as he did, a person on a bike came speeding past. They would’ve surely hit Bjōrn if he hadn’t stopped him. As the biker rode away, Ren’s eyes followed him, taking note of the little imp on the person’s head, grumbling and groaning in it’s weird language. Ren’s smile had completely disappeared as he stared in the direction the bike went.

"Mm..." He blinked watching the bike. "Thank you... that was strange." He shook his head a little, the sudden forced stop from Ren making him wobble a little. He popped the handle for his door and slid into his front seat, unlocking the other side for Ren. "And if you're worried, I use the chair because I'd get too tired walking everywhere." He glanced over lightly, "I'm not like... paralyzed or something." He chuckled. He pulled out into the street, resting back in his seat. He had a nice car, one of the few things he enjoyed. He'd bought the Ford GT when he'd gotten his final diagnosis.... Humming softly, fingers tapping the handle of his gear shift, driving for the shop. "Why are you so eager to work so soon?" @certifiedangel
Avatar
“You’re welcome.” Ren said softly before making his way to the car. Once it was unlocked, he climbed in and buckled up. As he relaxed in the seat, he glanced over to Bjōrn. He never once thought Bjōrn was severely injured or sick enough to need the chair 24/7. He nodded in understanding before smiling. Ren had never had an issue with feelings getting in the way of work. However, this was.. interesting. He found himself staring at Bjōrn while he drove. Something about it made butterflies flutter in his chest. His side profile was admirable, to say the least. The other male’s question snapped him from his thoughts. “Hm? Oh.” He blinked a couple times before looking forward. “I prefer to be working. I don’t like to be out of work, even for more than a day.” He stated. It was the truth - although it was more pertained to his job as a guardian angel.

"Depending on your energy, you may be able to help me this evening. If you're up for it anyways. I'd pay you under the table." He said gently, nails tapping the gear shift. He pulled into the parking lot and slid his legs out of the car, pushing up to his feet. From just behind his seat he tugged out a cane, carefully heading up the stairs to the small restaurant. He held open the glass paned door for Ren and followed him in, leaning on his simple black cane, waving to one of the chefs behind the counter. He slid into a booth, sighing softly crossing his ankles. "This place is good." He wasn't sure what to say, interlacing his fingers. When the waitress came round for drinks he ordered a beer, using it to take some of his medications; the small packet of pills tucked in his pocket. @certifiedangel
Avatar
Ren raised an eyebrow, wondering what Bjōrn would be needing him after work for. He followed him up the stairs, then into the booth. The whole time, he made sure to take his time, allowing the other to keep up. The way this spirit was dragging him down irritated Ren in a way he’d never felt before.. He couldn’t seem to figure out why. “So I’ve heard.” Ren replied as he ordered himself a margarita. He was more a fruity type of guy. “What job were you talking about?” He asked, glancing at Bjōrn over the rim of his glass. @Vox: Too much Caramel

"I'm firing a nurse and I'm not doing so without a witness in room. Then you can go home." He chuckled sipping his beer. "300 dollars for being a camera man?" He gave taking the menus offered by the waitress. "I believe he's been stealing my medication." He flipped through the menu though he wasn't reading it, he came here nearly daily. He knew the menu by heart and he got the same thing every day. "I'm paying by the by. Order anything." He smiled lightly arms set over the other, thumb tapping his knuckles. He ordered four bowls just himself, three packaged to go, and the one for himself. "Thank you. In general." He said gently, "for being kind to me. Even if it's just to get a job." @certifiedangel
Avatar
Ren tilted his head curiously. “300 dollars to film you firing your nurse?” He said softly. Why would his nurse be stealing his medication..? What a no good for nothing.. He found himself getting.. frustrated? On Bjōrn’s behalf..? He realized this and shook it off before starting to flip through the menu. He ordered a spicy ramen bowl. He hadn’t indulged in human food in a long while - but this was definitely one of his favorites. He ordered just one, not wanting to pick the man’s pockets even though he’d offered. The thank you threw him off. In all of his years, no one had ever thanked him. Even though Bjōrn didn’t know what he was really doing, Ren still appreciated it. It caused a smile to form. “It’s no problem, sir. But I will say, it’s not just to get a job.”

"Either way." He sighed softly setting his head back on the booth, eyes closed. His head ached. He kept most people away from him, a personal selfish activity. He couldn't bare the pity at times. He sat up when the food arrived, lightly mixing it with his spoon. "Most treat me like I'm too tired or weak to be independent. I thank you for not." He nodded lightly smiling gently, then eating.

Ren’s eyes softened. He could feel his heart pounding out of his chest as he looked at the other. Something about him.. just.. drove him crazy in a way. He wanted to help Bjōrn - more than what his job had required him to. As the food arrived, Ren slowly began eating at it, closing his eyes. “Of course. You are just another person after all.” Anyone who knew what Ren actually was would laugh at that comment - at how suspicious it sounded. It made it sound like he himself wasn’t a person in that moment. @Vox: Too much Caramel

He chuckled softly, but focused on his food. "Well, Ren. Are you dating? Married?" He tipped his head lightly, smiling. He didn't care to be proper with it. Life was too short for it. "I'd assume you'd have someone bending over backwards to make you happy." He emptied his bowl and set it aside, lightly rolling his beer bottle between his palms. This is what is important. He smiled softly reminding himself. @certifiedangel

Ren’s face flushed slightly, almost choking on his food at the question. He quickly grabbed a napkin to clean his mouth. “Ahem.. no, I’m not currently.. with anyone.” He hadn’t expected such a question. It really threw him off. As he finished eating what was left, he also pushed the bowl away before downing the rest of the margarita. @Vox: Too much Caramel

He laughed and silenced it by drinking, setting the bottle back to the table. "I'm sorry. That was rude. But the face you made was hilarious." He chuckled, setting his chin in his hand. "But you could get probably any girl." He chuckled again finishing his bottle, "Guy too." He looked up to take his to go order and set them to the table, "I'm sorry my medicine is kicking in so I'm being a fool." He snorted shaking his head. @certifiedangel

“No no it wasn’t rude, you’re okay.” Ren waved a hand with a smile. His heart was racing, what was this? He had never felt this before. What the fuck was going on? “I see. Must we get you home then? I can drive if you need.” He offered, setting the bowls up to be easily grabbed by the waitress at the end of the table. He stood, offering a hand to help the other up. @Vox: Too much Caramel

He gave him the to-go box inside, large cups of soup stored safely for the car. "Do you know how to drive?" He blinked pushing up, setting up his cane. "I'm safe to drive but else you can." He chuckled following him out of the restaurant. He waved goodbye to the chef who joked quickly with him in Japanese. He laughed with him, shutting the door behind him. "I live downtown." He opened his car holding the keys debating who was driving. @certifiedangel
Avatar
“I do.” Ren smiled, picking up the to go boxes and carrying them carefully cradled in his arms - as if they were precious cargo. Although he understood the Japanese man well, he didn’t make it obvious, pretending he didn’t. He simply waited patiently for the other before heading down to the car. Once there, he set the soup inside in a snug spot before taking the keys. Before he climbed in himself, he opened Bjōrn’s door for him, then closed it for him as well then climbed in. “Just tell me where to go.” He smiled. As they drove, it was quite peaceful. Ren only made small talk - but he couldn’t quite get the feeling in his chest to go away.

His chest still hurt.... He lightly guided the way to the downtown and to the highrise parking. His building was a massive spire of glass, Bjorn carrying the food inside. He scanned a card to get in the door and let them both inside. His building had a front desk, the woman behind it smiling when he set down the containers. "Heya can I get a new key?" "Again?!" "Yea. But turn card three off and give him it." "I've done this twice this month." "Yea but I brought you food." "You can't bribe me with chili." "But it's Soba today." She pursed her lips and he motioned for the new keycard. "Only because you're sick." "Oh b.s. it's cuz I'm hot." He snorted, and she rolled her eyes. "I'm old enough to be your mother!" He let Ren in the elevator passing him the key. When the door shut he leaned back on the wall, tightening his eyes in pain. "Don't mind her. She'd let you in even without a key if you need to. She's nice." He chuckled softly, voice tired. @certifiedangel

As they walked in, Ren resumed his stance of walking with his hands clasped behind his back. He smiled at the small interaction. It was endearing - and it made the whole situation harder. It was evident to Ren that Bjōrn wasn’t the one who has earned this curse. He didn’t deserve it. It didn’t sit well with Ren that he’d be the one to deliver him to heaven so early. Could he do anything…? As Bjōrn began walking away, Ren was snapped from his thoughts before he followed, quickly entering the elevator to take the key. He looked over it. Everything was so high tech now.. His eyes trailed to the other male in the elevator. “Are you okay?” He asked, a hesitant hand coming up to rest on Bjōrn’s shoulder out of concern.

"I'm alright. My condition causes me pain and my medicine isn't the best all the time." He smiled tight lipped, hoping it was reassuring. When it opened on his floor, the top, he unlocked his phone turning on the video for him. The night nurse was furious at being fired but Bjorn was right. He'd been taking his medications, commonly used to get high. Ren connected why he wanted the recording mentally. Bad days that the nurse exploited. Stealing his things. Threatening to report him for crimes or abuse. Who would they believe some rich brat or an employee? Once the man was out Bjorn sunk onto his couch holding his pills. "Thank you. You can leave. If you want." He said softly. His apartment was relatively empty. He only had two photos of family, only one of which he was in. He had two younger siblings based on the picture. Twisting off the cap to his pills he downed two of them dry. "I'm worried if you stay I'm going to start waxing philosophy." @certifiedangel

Ren stood relatively close - almost like a body guard - during the confrontation with the nurse. He would assist, if need be. But that didn’t happen. The nurse left quite angry, so Ren was glad nothing had escalated. Once he was gone, Ren turned to the other, his eyes softening slightly. He could see the time was coming close - that Ren would have to lead Bjōrn to the other side soon. Something about that.. didn’t sit right with him. He had this feeling in his chest, one he’d never felt before. But it was so strong. He wanted to really save Bjōrn, not just in the sense of taking him to heaven. His body tensed as he made up his mind. “I’d like to stay.” He said softly, sitting beside Bjōrn on the couch. “At least until you fall asleep..” @Vox: Too much Caramel
Avatar
"You're not here to work. Are you?" He said softly hands gently shaking. "Overall. I hurt." He struggled to say, what energy he had fading out. He was tired and hurt and just wanted to sleep. "I can't take two more years of this." He hugged himself sliding sideways on the couch. The medication and alcohol made him delirious, and barely mentally on earth. "I'm scared." He mumbled eyes burning so he curled up, squeezing his eyes shut. @certifiedangel
Avatar
Ren moved from the couch to the floor to kneel in front of Bjōrn. His expression was sad. He had never felt this way for a soul before. Was it because he was so young? No. He had never wanted to save someone - even younger ones than Bjōrn. A soft sigh left his lips. Another thing he’d never done was spill the secret on his identity. But it technically wasn’t against any rules. “Yes, I’m here for work.. but, not for you.” A hesitant hand reached forward, moving some hair from the other’s face. “I’m your guardian Angel. I’m supposed to help you to the other side.. t.. tonight..” The state of the other distressed the angel. What could he do? @Vox: Too much Caramel
Avatar
"Then... please do now..." He murmured, "I can't take this pain anymore..." He curled up. Eventually he fell asleep, head in Rens lap. His mixing of alcohol and his pills were making his sleep wavering, his breath shuddering. The curse would be easy enough to suppress for a little while, a month or so.... He twisted in his sleep groaning softly in discomfort shoed feet dragging across the carpet. @certifiedangel
Avatar
As Bjōrn fell asleep, Ren plotted. He had an idea - it was crazy but.. The heart inside his chest was racing. He’d never felt this way for anyone. After a moment, he slowly crawled out from under the man’s head, making his way out of the apartment. A month passed. Ren never showed back up, but after a few days, Bjōrn’s condition started to improve suddenly. @Vox: Too much Caramel

He noticed the difference, but he also remembered what that man had said. He had people watch for him, determined to find him. And find him he did. His brother handed him a mask, chuckling softly as Bjōrn hesitated. "This was a bad idea...." He muttered sliding it on. His brother was entrenched in gangs. His whole family knew it but ignored. Today it was useful. The thought of buying another person made him sick, but he heard someone that looked just like Ren was here. Holding his brothers arm, both walked through the crowd to the auditorium, taking a seat amongst the rest of the masked crowd. The cash weighed heavy in his pocket. He hoped it was enough.... "He's third on the roster." "Okay...." It'd been hard to explain why he wanted his brothers help, but thankfully his sibling had trusted him to his silence. His heart was in his throat. I'm supposed to take you to the other side, tonight. He'd said. He was supposed to die but now he was healthier than he had been for a long time....

Everything stemmed to happen so fast. Ren had made his way to hell, spoke with the devil himself. Convinced him to rid Bjōrn of his generational curse. But of course, those things came with a price. Ren’s next 5 souls that he was meant to transport were to be taken to hell instead. Ren had hesitated, but agreed. Once he’d completed the last soul’s trek to hell, he was discovered. Taken to heaven and chained down in front of all the other guardians. God himself tore his wings from his back agonizingly slow before throwing him down to earth once again, never to return. He wandered for a bit, trying to figure out what to do. When a seemingly helpful citizen approached, Ren learned how cruel humankind could be. He didn’t have any relatives or friends obviously, so when he disappeared, it went unnoticed. Now, here he was the next day, sat in a cage on wheels. It was covered in a tarp, so he couldn’t tell exactly what was going on. But he could hear someone speaking extremely fast - saying something that had to do with .. numbers? And different voices were yelling out numbers. The first two sold rather quick. Then suddenly, Ren felt himself moving. The movement made him fall to his hands and knees. “Ladies and gentlemen, we present to you something very special tonight! Found wandering the earth’s surface, no name, no place… now you can have your very own….” the tarp was suddenly pulled off the cage to reveal Ren inside. The lights were blinding, making him throw a hand up in front of his face to try and shield it. He looked relatively the same, now unable to change his looks due to the loss of his position. The captors had left him shirtless, showing off the gashes in his back. It was these wounds that gained him the nickname… “Fallen Angel!

"Him." "You're sure?" "Yes." Bjorn raised his tag, placing a bet. His siblings men helped shut down the few bidders there were until only Bjorn was left. He wouldn't let Ren slip out of his hands. He went to the cashier to pay the 15,000, handing over the cash, and followed the attendant to the side room. "We'll bring him now." The attendant bowed slightly and Bjorn anxiously waited, gripping his coat. He kept on the mask, concerned of cameras. For now he was anonymous, and he would remain as much as he could. Ren was pushed inside with him, and he restrained the urge to scoop him up in his arms. He didn't know if the angel would recognize him. If he was even real.... @certifiedangel

15,000? Was he really worth that much? Who was even paying for him anyways? What were their plans? What were they going to do? Ren didn’t really have time to sit and think about the possibilities. The booming voice of the bidder overpowered them with his boasting “Sold! To bidder 762!” And then the cage was wheeled off the stage, making room for the next item. The room he was wheeled into was dimly lit, and he had moved to one corner of the cage. This was pointless, obviously, seeing as an attendant was in shortly after to force him out. They guided him to a room quite forcefully due to Ren’s resistance, before shoving him in. That’s when he was met with his new ‘owner.’ Instinctively, he cowered away slightly, the thoughts from earlier returning. There was no real way to get out of the situation, seeing as any and all of his abilities were useless now. @Vox: Too much Caramel

He bent gently to lift Ren's chin, hands hesitant and soft. He didn't like the other flinching away from him like that. "You weren't lieing to me. Where you?" Slipped past his lips before he could stop it. Ren was real. An actual angel in his hands. "I won't let anyone hurt you again." He promised gently helping the other up, hugging him tight. "You saved my life. Even if just for a while.... Why?" He couldn't keep his hands from shaking, holding Ren tight, trembling like a leaf. @certifiedangel

Ren’s eyes widened slightly at the touch. It felt… familiar. The feeling of familiarity only grew when the masked man spoke. That voice… What he’d said. “Bjōrn…?” He whispered, quickly returning the hug as he closed his eyes, maybe holding the other tighter than intended. The wounds in his back were still relatively fresh, so he flinched a bit but he didn’t care. “I wouldn’t lie to you..” “I… I don’t know.. I just..” he started, unsure of how to explain why he’d really saved him. He couldn’t seem to let go of the other, burying his face in his shoulder. “How did you find me.. why did you spend so much to save me..?” He mumbled into him, his fingers gently gripping at the other’s coat.

"You saved my life..." He repeated. Another man, close in age and appearance to Bjōrn set a coat gently over Ren's shoulders. He smiled brightly to Ren. "We should leave. The cars outside." Isaac beamed and Bjōrn nodded holding Rens arm. He helped the angel get outside and into the car, the SUV a sleek black box. "Here. It's okay. Isaac is my brother." Bjorn explained. @certifiedangel

Ren flinched at the feeling of the coat, not having expected it. He sat his head up to look back at the man who had placed it, noting the resemblance between him and Bjōrn. Reluctantly, he broke off the hug before having his arm taken. He had so many questions, about what was happening, where they just were, who those people were.. But none of that mattered in that moment. Once in the car, Ren finally seemed to calm a little, his muscles relaxing. As an angel, he never really had an issue with trivial things such as human feelings. He never felt hunger, fatigue, pain even. But now.. as the car started moving, he could feel his eyelids growing heavy, the exhaustion catching up with him. After a moment of fighting it, his head slowly lowered to Bjōrn’s shoulder next to him, his eyelids finally sliding shut as he almost instantly fell asleep. @Vox: Too much Caramel

He held Ren close as Isaac drove, careful of his back. "Are you going to explain?" "No. Keep this to yourself." He ordered and went silent. At his apartment he carefully nudged Ren awake enough to walk. He wasn't strong enough to carry him in. He unlocked his door gently guiding Ren to the couch. "Are you hungry? I'll make food." He asked softly letting Ren lay sideways on the couch. @certifiedangel

A soft groan left his lips as he was woken up, making him sit up and rub the sleep from his eyes. He was slow making his way to the apartment, and slow to lay down. He stripped the coat to let his back breathe and opted to lay on his stomach on the couch, almost immediately closing his eyes again. Was he hungry? He couldn’t really tell. “I.. don’t know.” He admitted. The entire situation was embarrassing. “You’ve already done enough..” @Vox: Too much Caramel

He smiled softly and went to the kitchen to put a pizza in the oven, toed off his shoes, and walked through the apartment barefoot. Ren’s eyes slid open slightly as he heard Bjōrn shuffle around the apartment. The couch was cozy and warm.. it threatened to throw him back into sleep at any moment.
