Indeed, there it was, the awkward pause before... something. What something? The way she responded, it was different than usual. Something in her voice, her posture. He couldn't tell. Things were always so playful-prickly between them, two good friends throwing little jabs, but only because each of them could take it, like sparring partners in a boxing ring or something. Honing their wit, their comebacks, even their...flirting?
But now the energy was different. There was no sparring, no quick jabs, not even flirting, as such. Only... care. Concern. Something way more deep and genuine.
Tom started to panic a little at the awkwardness. He wasn't used to this. But there was... there was a thing to do, and he couldn't be sure, but... it was the kind of thing you were never sure about, right, you just had to--
He grabbed her by the shoulders, leaned in, and kissed her on the mouth. Not hard, not in a real panicky way, but in a way he wanted to savor. She was gorgeous, and soft, and smelled nice and... he broke the kiss.
"Oh my god," he gasped, looking in her eyes, his hands still on her shoulders. "I... I'm sorry... I..."
