The bell over the door rung mutely, announcing a new customer. Raising her head, Coté looked over the unfortunate who had entered. He could not be more than a few years younger than her, but it was hard to tell with how thin he was. William seemed soaked to the bone, water dripping as he approached with caution. She wanted to be angry, if anyone else had tracked that much water into her work, she would have turned them out on their ear.
"Howdy stranger," the young woman greeted with a slight accent.
Rising from the seat she had dragged over, she smoothed her leggings as Coté drank in the strangers features. Kid looked like he had it rough.
Taking a cup, she dug it into the ice chest before think better of it. The shaven woman dumped the ice back into the chest and produced a menu for the stranger.
Turning, Coté placed a chipped white cup by the coffee burner as she spoke, "got caught by the down pour?" The woman made small talk to fill the otherwise grim silence that sat thickly like the dust on the decorations up on the top shelf.
