Jax BOT 14-Aug-21 09:56 PM
The mist shredded through his fingers crawling like snakes in the air as he flew through a cloud made of rain and wasted dreams. Zooming out one side with speed in his favor he burst through the haze with a splash of water springing to life around him. Those tiny droplets sparkled in the moonlight before falling to the world below. Jax dashed downward competing with gravity then circled back up like a rollercoaster. Propelling himself into the forest where the fairies and nocturnal creatures dwelled. He was not supposed to be there. Stay away, they said. You are chaos, they said. Screw’em, he said. And flew into territory that would get him into trouble. Fuck it. What was the point in living if you could not rock the boat once in a while? Plants whipped past him and a group of glowing fireflies chased his path. Flying over areas that were off-limits to pirates and meant to remain unseen, kept secret - but he could not stop himself from exploring the world he had come to call home. Even if that meant stepping into danger. Living this isolating life was the only one he knew, traveling at night under the disguise of the moon.
When he happened upon a purple lagoon dazzling with glowing water, he perched himself on a nearby tree branch and stopped to watch the creatures bathing there. Their dainty figures spun on the surface like ballerinas. Playing games with each other. Magic dust spun around their flawless bodies casting visual spells that kept him there for hours. Each fairy was different in size and color creating a unique sound when they flew, like chimes in the wind, their melodic chords were hypnotizing and pirates would kill to get their hands on one of them. Jax smirked. They would have to catch them first. There was one fairy in particular he spied on every night. Having met her only once, she reminded him of sunlight and had helped him when she was not supposed to, broke the rules for him - and left without saying a word. He wanted to thank her for what she did all those years ago. Though he never found the right moment or courage to approach her since they were not allowed to speak, that did not stop him from coming to see her each night, wondering if he would ever get a chance to see what her wings felt like.

There was a large rock Kix liked to sit on. It was in the middle of the lagoon and gave her the ability to see what was going on. Considering the fairies were playing a game of tag it was important for Kix to claim this spot. She hunkered down hoping her friends wouldn’t see her huddled there, hiding as best she could. She peeked out to see where everyone was and to her surprise…. no one was around. She crawled onto the rock, her wings fluttering, and looked over the edge to where her reflection on the water stared back at her. She’d all but fallen in love with her image when she noticed a figure in the trees. A boy with brown hair and green eyes watching her. She quickly turned around but he was gone. A figment of her imagination lost like a popped bubble. She stood on the rock to get a better view but that was a mistake as two hands pushed her and she lost her balance, falling face first into the lagoon. Splash! Purple water swarmed her as she sunk below the surface. Engulfed by the warmth of the lagoon her golden wings glowed under the depths of the clear water, sparkling like magic with tiny bubbles swirling around her body. Her feet kicked and soon she was swimming to the top, bursting through the surface and gasping for air…. and there he was. The fairy Lord named Damel offering his hand to her in more ways than one.
She wiped her face and spun around hoping to see the boy in the tree, but he was gone. Her diamond-like eyes searched but the night held only the moon. When she looked back at Damel she splashed water in his direction and grinned, swimming away from him until she was at the shore. That’s where she started to dry off. Shaking her body and wings so droplets of water fell to the earth. For once, she wasn’t the one chasing everyone around! Kix stayed near the trees and watched the games unfold. This is what they did every night to recharge their energy. Every fairy had a unique gift. Some could create fire or call upon water, earth, or air. But Kix was different. She happened to be the one blessed with pure luck, just something she was born with, and why it was important for her to stay hidden. Pirates hunted fairies that could bring them good fortune and no one else was like Kix. Not for centuries. So when night came and her golden colors could shine she was easy to spot. Yellow rays of light whispering into existence everywhere she went. She was all but relaxed when a twig snapped behind her. Her fairy senses didn’t pick up danger, but something else, something familiar. Turning slowly to look over her shoulder she anticipated seeing Damel….

Just a little longer. A little closer. He did not want to leave before he had a chance to see her twirl around coaxing fairy dust to spiral through the air - that was his favorite part to watch each night. There was not only a sound that happened when she did her dance, but also a fragrance that accompanied her nightly ritual. Wheat. Sunshine. Warmth. All bundled up into tiny particles that sparkled like diamonds. He managed to touch the aftertaste of her magic only once and to this day, he still remembered the way her essence made him melt. Affection did not exist where he came from. The concept of love was beyond his understanding. The girl with golden wings was his first experience touching an emotion he was not aware could live inside of him. Striking curiosity to visit her each night. Questioning why he found her so...addictive. His hand pressed against the rough bark of the tree, leaning in for support to get a better look at the fairy who captured his attention - when the branch he claimed suddenly snapped in two causing him to plummet to the ground. “Ow,” he groaned with dry leaves poking and sticking out from his wild brown hair. Jax got to his feet, and when he stood up - there she was. Staring at him. He froze like a deer in headlights. They were mirroring each other with the same expression. Surprised. Cautious. Fear fueled the color of his usually calm green eyes. If she called for help, he would not be able to escape the wrath of the fairy kingdom. Their magic was enchanting, yet poisonous to their enemies. He took a step back planning an escape to flee...

Within the darkness, a boy stood basking in silver moonlight, and if she didn’t see it for herself, she’d never guess he was capable of experiencing fear. Kix could see that wonderful emotion hiding in those beautiful hazel eyes. Her cautious hand reached out to him in the silence as if to beckon him towards her. Let him know she wasn’t going to hurt him. How could she? He was the face she’d rescued all those years ago. The one burned into her mind like a fire gone wrong. Did he remember her? She remembered him. Every night she looked to the stars and made a wish hoping to one day reunite with the boy that made her break all the rules…. “Don’t go,” she whispered. The honeyed aura of her wings cast shades of amber onto his face. She took a fragile step towards him and when he didn’t run her wings beat together graciously, sending her into the air in his direction. Her soft hair fluttered past her arms as she landed inches away so they were nose to nose. Golden light washed over his sharp features taking him in like a buttery embrace. Her lips hovered near his, smelling the woodsy scent consuming the air around them. Curiosity captured her every move as if she were seeing a flame for the first time, she needed to know if it hurt. Reaching out to move one of his wild locks away from his face. That tender finger swiping his brow with benevolent intentions. “I know you….” the words were filled with kindness and truth. They were quiet and loving. Compassionate with the weight of a deeper meaning. The white dress hugging her figure twirled in the wind, gripping her as the warm breeze moved between them, combining their unique scent together in some sort of forbidden promise that was destined to be kept a secret.

Stunned. He stood there amazed as the fairy flew to him with wings that chimed quietly in the night. Jax was tempted to run - yet he could not. He was frozen in place by her radiant beauty. Not many creatures could fly the way he did and it was only when he was faced with her abilities did he realize how attractive it was that she could go to the secret places only he could find. She could join him in the caves of Loiya. Or swim in the rivers of Harthole. Why was he thinking of taking her to his favorite hideouts? When her finger touched his face he suddenly had his answer. A tingling delight trailed the path she carved over his brow. Unsure if that was normal or he had made the whole thing up. Yes, his eyes were wide. With awe. And fear. As well as unexplainable interest to get to know the girl that was off-limits. Fairies were incredible creatures, yet they were deadly for a reason. Turning back from this was too late, though his gut would tell him she would be one of his greatest adventures - one he needed to take.
She leaned close to him as if she were interested in getting to know who he was. How he smelled. The feeling of his skin. But what about his taste? The idea sprung to life and just as quick as it formed into existence it manifested in the flesh. Without warning, he gave that etherial girl a peck on the lips. The movement was so quick he did not have time to reconsider what he had done - acknowledging the lingering bliss he stole in that moment was worth the risk. A smile sparked against his features. One that would let her know he enjoyed doing this with her. His playful gesture was met with a push of his feet, kicking off the ground and soaring to a branch that reached for the midnight sky. He perched himself there and stared down to her as if finding new safety in their distance. “What’s your name?” he asked the fairy. If she had intentions to betray him he had put enough distance between them where he could escape - doing this had kept him safe over the years, and he would not stop practicing this favored routine now.

Her face popped with surprise when he stole a darling kiss. “Tricky boy,” she said with a delighted smile curving her rosy lips. She watched him create unforeseen distance between the two of them as if he were ashamed of what he’d done. “Trust issues?” she added. She unfolded her beautiful wings and flew up to the slim branch where he felt safe. Knowing he was inching closer to the midnight sky so if he wanted to escape there would be at least an itty bitty chance for him to flee. Kix was well aware he’d have luck on his side since her lingering golden taste glistened on his lips. Her nose scrunched ever so slightly with disapproval and curiosity because of that. Tenderly sitting on the branch next to his perched figure she turned her eyes to the stars. Her white dress swooned against her closed thighs as her hands came to rest upon them. “My name is Eloira Kixalene, but you may call me Kix, if you wish….” she didn’t press him on his name or ask any questions. She was determined to keep him around for as long as she possibly could. The tiny stars hovering above her twinkled within her bright eyes, telling her this new destiny she’d been hoping for had finally been granted. But at what cost? When she turned to face him there was happiness battling uncertainty within the angelic glow surrounding her.
“You know I could get into a lot of trouble for speaking with you,” for a moment she peered to the lagoon worried someone would notice she was gone or that she was having a conversation with a potential threat to their kind, but no one was looking for her. Not yet. The fairies were still playing their innocent games and if she played her cards right, they wouldn’t even notice if she slipped away for a while. But was that really a good idea? She bit on her bottom lip nervously debating if she should end this now or stay a little longer. Mirroring the boy who was equally ready to depart. What a pair they made.

“No one can be trusted...” he said, and pushed off the branch to float aimlessly in the air. He folded his arms across his chest. Wisps of brown hair touched the sides of his face as he continued to glide away from the fairy. He wanted to see if she would follow him into the sky, or if this is where they parted ways. “Tell me, Kix…” Jax was now offering her a smile. One that meant mischief. And adventure. Seeing if she would take the bait to join him on betraying the rules once more. “What would happen if they discovered you saved my life all those years ago?” His movements changed from a linear path to one that was curved. Soaring through the sky in circles until returning face to face with the fairy. If she were smart, she would know he would try to steal another kiss just to have good luck on his side. Just to see what she would do. Just to cause trouble. Jax placed his hands on either side of Kix wrapping his hands around the branch. That was the problem with lost boys. They could not keep away from their temptations, even if it meant they would get hurt in the process - they needed a light to guide them through the darkness.

While sitting on the slim branch her feet swung gently back and forth. Her delicate hands moved on top of Jax’s fists at her side, leaning into his savory advance just to tease him a tiny bit. Nose to nose again she said, “I’d be in a lot of trouble. What happened that day stays a secret between the two of us! You got that, lost boy?” Her wings fluttered ever so slightly and the yellow aura illuminating from the thin translucent texture twinkled like wild sparkles on the fourth of July. She rose her eyebrow as if she were challenging him and then…. she was gone. Kix leaned backward, holding onto the branch like it were her own personal jungle gym, so her legs would push against Jax in the tumble causing him to fly upward. Kix let go of the branch somersaulting in the direction of the ground. She pushed her wings open to fly in the air, suspended in the night sky with a sudden urge to wipe that silly grin off the boy’s face, she hovered near him with playful intentions to rile him up. Was it working? “How fast can you fly, boy?” she asked, smiling because she knew she could outdo him if she really wanted. Her wings fluttered again as if she were preparing to take off. Would he be up for a midnight game of who could win the race? She wanted to see if he could keep up with her, and that friendly gleam in the corner of her eye was meant to taunt him just because she could.

“Faster than you,” he replied, and refused to give her a head start. Jax took off at the speed of light darting through trees stretching into the starry sky with pointed branches labored in colorful leaves - even in the night, these vibrant shades twinkled against the twilight of the moon. If she wanted to play a game, he would give her one. The twists and turns were meant to throw the fairy off course and he would not stop to look over his shoulder until breaking out of the forest clearing. They were far from the lagoon now, and he did not anticipate feeling a sense of freedom with that minor detail. Turning around to face the girl there was a smile claiming his face, one that instantly vanished - he did not see her, or her yellow aura. Jax moved back to the tree lining disheartened she did not keep up with him, or his desire to outdo her. Savage locks of curly brown hair hung over his hazel eyes as he searched the land for any signs of the enchanted creature. Finding nothing. He moved silently in the air and crossed his arms with annoyance - had his first attempt to play with Kix gone wrong? He thought of calling out to her and knew that was a bad idea. Alerting the fairy kingdom to his presence was not worth the cost, which meant he was left with one choice: to give up. At least she would not see the sadness in his eyes, or the way his face changed realizing their time together was cut short. After watching Kix over the years he knew she was highly sought after. He knew there were suitors seeking her hand in marriage. Or whatever. Not that he knew anything about their rituals - the point was he knew the way Damel looked at her and the spike of jealousy that stabbed him when she returned his dishonorable smile. That smug piece of shi-...part of him felt the fairy belonged to him, and only him. After what they went through. After she saved his life. How could he not?

Kix poked her head around a large tree covered in tiny jasmine flowers and watched the way the lost boy hovered in the air looking for her. He seemed sad, almost as if he missed her being there to chase him, and she really didn’t know how she felt about that. She closed her wings to keep them from spreading light and tried her best to stay hidden within the darkness on the ground. Not to torment him, but to observe these strange emotions she rarely got to see in the fairy kingdom. She waited until he was planning on leaving and then rose into the air, silently moving to his backside. “Boo,” she said with a smile. When he would turn to see her, she would be inches away from his face, having planned her arrival strategically so when he turned around thinking she had really left him alone.... there she was. Waiting with bright eyes that sparkled just for him. Ready to bug him the way he deserved. Deserved? ….or needed? “Don’t look so disappointed,” she teased and tapped him on the end of his nose. “I think it’s fair to say I won this round?” Joking! Totally joking, but she wanted to get his reaction. “I think we need a redo, whaddya say?” and this time, she wouldn’t disappear on him. Because what she originally thought would have been funny, turned out to bring him nothing but sorrow. She was also hesitant to let him know she spied on those hidden feelings. Where she came from, those types of emotions meant weakness, which could get her or someone else harmed if not dealt with properly. There would be another day, another time when she could figure out what they meant for the lost boy. For now, all she wanted to do was see him happy again. Her wings moved in such a way as if to tempt him into chasing her. Slowly drifting away for round two....

“Someone’s coming,” he said, and grabbed the fairy by her wrist. He flew down to the forest floor dragging her with him to stay hidden within the brush. “They’re looking for you…” he whispered, watching the shadowy silhouettes soar above them. The warmth within his palm called his attention back to the girl, and only then did he notice he was touching her forbidden body - his fingers glowed with the unusual charm she produced and he immediately let her go. They called out for Kix. Five of them searched for the lost member of their tribe within the boundaries of the forest. Each zipping through the trees to find her. Restless. Looking for the girl who illuminated the world with colors of pure sunshine, and when she did not answer, the surprise in Jax’s eyes faded - reflecting the ethereal creature on her knees at his side. As she placed a hand on his shoulder the tension from their choices melted off him like candlewax. There was a difference when touching her on his own account, versus being touched by her own desire and will. He could no longer feel pain, sadness, or loss. The only emotions he felt were positive. An electricity that made him want to fly into the sky and make him scream at the tops of his lungs. That he found something wonderful. Something golden. Something that made him want to laugh again. Kix must have known this was happening as she took her hand off of him. Each of them mirroring the other that actions like this were off-limits and meant to be kept at a minimum. They waited until the coast was clear, and that’s when he asked her, “Are you sure you want to do this?”
