Usually, the brothers would help each other up and over the high stone fence, one climbing on top of the other's shoulders before climbing to the top and then extending a hand down to pull the other up. But then, Calvin had taken ill and unfortunately, he would never leave that bed again, dying later that same fall, the same day Leonard turned 19. When they buried him, Leonard placed some flowers he had stolen from a local garden on the grave. Carnations, lilies, and asphodel.
Even with one less person to feed, the family was still destitute. So, two days after putting Calvin to rest in the earth, Leonard found himself climbing the wall, this time all on his own. He filled his bag full of apples, but found difficulty getting back up the fence while carrying it. He'd usually have his brother to give him a boost and then, once he was atop the wall, he'd reach back down and be handed the sack of apples.
Leonard climbed up the wall, gripping the tied off end of the bag in his teeth. The stones of the wall dug into his hands and legs. As he neared the top, one of the stones shifted and he slipped, falling backwards to the ground, landing full on his back before hitting his head off of the ground and everything went black.
Leonard woke to a persistent poking. (edited)
