Taylor McAllister BOT 01-Nov-22 04:01 AM
Taylor McAllister was just like any other twenty four year old woman. She had a steady job, her own apartment, and while she didn't have a car, she didn't necessarily need one. The city here had public transport that picked her up and dropped her off right outside her complex which made things easier than any other place she had lived at. It was a beautiful sunny day when... when Taylor's world crashed and burned. "Whew! I'm beat..." She yawned as she opened the door, two armloads of groceries in her fists. She dropped the heavy tote bags onto the ground and kicked the door shut. Her condo was rather small. It had an open layout with the living room greeting the individual that entered as soon as they stepped inside. Off to the right was the kitchen and to the left was a small hallway that lead to the bedroom and bathroom. While the condo was small, the rent was affordable and it had all the necessities she needed! It was honestly her own little sanctuary. She was the end unit so she didn't have to worry about noise from both sides. The condo was a single floor, as were all the other condos, but it was cozy. She walked across the living room after removing her sneakers and leaving them on the mat at the door. She headed into her kitchen and began to unload her groceries. The kitchen was decorated with light grey wood and white walls, but the cabinets had black accents that luckily gave the room some closure instead of being all white. Her fridge stood beside the oven and the counters extended for the length of the kitchen, which gave her plenty of room to cook. She had a small kitchen table off to the right that had enough room for two people. Taylor lived alone so she didn't see the need to get a huge table. She also didn't host people often, so the need just wasn't there.
04:01
When her groceries were finally put away, Taylor went and hunkered down onto her couch with a sigh. "Finally..." She grabbed the remote control and clicked the TV on. Some Jerry Springer show was on and while she normally loved this 'trashy TV' she just couldn't stay awake. Taylor curled on the couch with a hum. She grabbed a blanket from the basket beside the couch and she pulled it over herself. She buried her face in the furry throw pillow she had sitting on the plush couch. Soon, Taylor's eyes began to grow heavy. The last thing she remembered before she fell asleep was, "Smells like the neighbor burnt dinner again..." ~~~ Taylor woke up sweating. God, why was it so hot in here? Taylor whined and tossed her blanket off. As she did, she felt even hotter! Was she running a fever? Her chest was tight and she couldn't breathe well. Coughing, Taylor opened her eyes. When she did, all she saw was smoke. Thick heavy grey smoke billowed around her apartment, and the ceiling was burning! Orange and red flames danced along the room, specks of the wooden frame dropping onto the floor. Her acrylic rug began to melt and burn and Taylor screamed. "H-Help! Someone!" She scrambled to get off the couch. She stepped on a burnt piece of wood and she yelped, dropping to her knees. Why couldn't she remember her first grade training on this?!
04:01
Her heart slammed into her chest, her long blonde hair scattered around her back. Her blue eyes brimming with tears. Another scream tore from her throat. "Someone help!!" She began to crawl to the door, the smoke thick and clouding her vision. She reached for the door, but as soon as she grabbed the metal handle, she screamed. The metal was so hot! She clutched her hand and pulled it back. "Fuck!!" She hit the wood of the door, but that too was hot. The condos were not built with numerous exits, as they were older buildings. She couldn't see, and she could barely see the window! As she tried to decide where to go next, a large beam from the ceiling suddenly broke, the burning wood dropping down onto Taylor's extended leg and ankle. The bone snapped, causing Taylor to wail. "Someone help me! Please!" She screamed as loud as possible. The smoke became too thick and she struggled to breathe. She coughed and hacked before she laid on the floor, her eyes burning from the heat and smoke and tears. She was going to die here... She was going to burn to death... "S-So...Some...one..." She whimpered. @Himbo Tie

Alejandro Ramirez BOT 10-Nov-22 01:02 AM
“You’re on dinner duty tonight, Ramirez. Just keep that in mind!” Alejandro looked up from the sink with a small grin as his friend, a large white man with an even larger grin stepped towards the door. Looking over his shoulder at the stove, he nodded before calling back, “Alright Braun, just don’t be a baby this time. And don’t be weird and add sauerkraut to your quesadilla today.” Laughing as the man shrugged before continuing out of the kitchen, Alejandro turned his attention back to the pan he was washing. It was a large skillet, and it was going to be what he used to cook the meal for the men and women of the firehouse. They traded responsibilities as they went through their shifts, with meal duty switching between the more talented of them while others took over other duties like laundry, mopping, or cleaning in the living quarters. No one dropped duties on the truck or in the garage, each one of them helping to clean and prepare the vehicles. They were preparing for the inevitable calls that would have them drop their comfortable patterns and go immediately into action to stop the worst from occurring. Taking the pan and rinsing the soap suds off it, he smirked as he grabbed the towel from the front of the oven and dried off the pan. Setting it on the burner, he replaced the towel and went to grab the rice cooker from the counter when he heard the alarm buzzing in the ceiling. Cursing his luck as he pulled his hand back from the cooker, he could hear groans of complaint alongside heavy footsteps as men and women scrambled into action. He was in a pair of black pants and a black T-shirt with the station’s numbers in red on his back. He had his boots on already, but he hadn’t been planning on an emergency. Whoever really was? Grabbing an apple from the counter, he ate it quickly in three large bites before tossing it into the trash can at the end of the counter. He chewed quickly with his mouth closed as he stepped out of the kitchen. .
01:03
Sprinting down the hall after the others, he grabbed an unoccupied pole and slid down it quickly to get into the garage where others were donning their gear. He looked at the chief for a second before the older man pointed at one of the ambulances that was being started. Alejandro was one of several firefighters that were cross trained as a paramedic, so he had to make sure he knew where to go for a call. Running over to his locker and pulling on his black and green fire resistant over pants and jacket, he pulled on his respiratory backpack and attached the tube to his helmet and mask. He heard from the chief that it was a structural fire, and that his crew would be charged with insertion and extricating any casualties. Finding his large axe and crowbar, he held them in his left hand while he pulled himself into the back of the ambulance. The whole process took less than a minute, and he could feel the vehicle already rolling to leave the garage. The drive took little time as well, for the dispatcher was directing the driver along the best route and police were already acting to block civilian traffic along portions of the route. Sorting some of the equipment in the back of the ambulance as the vehicle sped through the streets with its sirens blaring, Alejandro listened to the chief over the radio detailing that it was a condominium fire. Two units were engulfed in the blaze, so the paramedics would go there first before clearing the other homes of their residents. Nodding as he listened to the other ambulances on the way affirming that they had heard the order, Alejandro settled down for the next few minutes' drive. Before he knew it, they had entered the housing complex and were pulling up on the scene. Pushing open the door quickly, Alejandro leapt out of the slowing vehicle and turned to get his eyes on the scene. Sighing softly as he saw the final two buildings ablaze, he reached for the radio on his shoulder and spoke into it, “Ramirez on end unit.” .
01:03
Sprinting past the few parked cars and residents that were standing out front in shock, he saw out of his peripheral a trio of people in heavily smoke-stained clothes. The door to the second unit was open, and he had to figure that was where they came from. Pointing to them, he shouted quickly, “Is your neighbor home?!” Seeing the man look up before nodding slowly, Alejandro nodded back sternly before the paramedics from the second ambulance approached the residents. He pulled his helmet down tight and secured his mask before reaching the door to the unit. He could hear faint shouts from inside, but he knew they wouldn’t last long if he didn’t act. Dropping the crowbar, he brought the axe down in two swift chops at the doorframe next to the doorknob and locks. Separating the wood from the support and allowing the door to swing open, Alejandro stepped quickly to the side as a large tongue of flames blew out of the now open door. Reaching up and turning on the headlamps on his helmet, he stepped into the condominium unit and looked around quickly. Seeing the flames and smoke billowing throughout, he stepped in more and saw the ceiling beam on the ground. He then saw the woman pinned beneath it, her face a mixture of terror and agony. The beam was on her left leg, and the angle in relation to the rest of her body showed that at least one of her bones was broken. Walking towards her, he stepped over the beam and knelt down next to her, his eyes looking over her torso for any other obvious signs of injury. He was struck by the beauty of her features, but he ignored that instant thought and turned his attention to the beam that had her held down in this fiery blaze. Nodding as he developed a quick plan, he looked into her eyes and shouted over the roar of the blaze, “I’m going to lift the beam, I need you to try to pull your leg back to you when I do!!” .
01:03
Standing up and positioning himself over the beam, Alejandro looked to the woman and breathed in before squatting down and gripping the underside of the beam. He ignored the pain of the burning wood pressing through his resistant gloves and sleeves. Lifting up and shifting to the side, he set the beam down on the other side of her foot, no matter if she moved or not. Brushing the burning embers from the fabric onto the floor, Alejandro brought his hand up to his radio and spoke into it, “Need a stretcher at end unit. One female, early twenties, leg injury.” He hadn’t seen any sign that she had fallen from scrapes on her torso, so he had to believe she had been on the ground when the beam fell. Therefore, her spine and neck should be fine. As he scanned her again quickly for injuries, he heard creaking above them and the beginnings of another cave in. Knowing he couldn’t wait for the stretcher, Alejandro knelt down and brought his right arm under her arms and his left under her knees. Standing up slowly before stepping over the beam and exiting the home, he spoke in an apologetic tone, “I know this is going to hurt, but we’ll fix your leg soon.” @Super Sonic Vava

Taylor was starting to fade. Her eyes fluttered and she felt so dizzy. Her eyes were stinging and the smoke was suffocating her. She was going to die here... She set her head down, ready to accept her fate. The melting carpet was so warm and the pain in her lungs was so intense that she could feel her body telling her it was time to sleep. She had to just sleep now... it would all be over soon... Suddenly, the door burst open and Taylor's eyes snapped open. A large shadow appeared beside her and a man's voice could be heard through the dense smoke. He was instructing her to move her leg as he lifted the beam. The pain in her leg suddenly flared and she cried out. "P-Please hurry!" He lifted the beam and as he did, Taylor crawled forward, her ankle limp behind her. It was definitely broken, how badly though, she didn't know. Sobbing in fear, she wrapped her arms around his neck as he lifted her up. "I-It's okay. Please just..." She coughed hard as the smoke continued to surround her, "Let's go!" She hid her face in his neck, coughing as she forced the smoke out of her lungs. As the two exited the condo, one of the other firefighters, Melinda James, one of the newer fire fighters, approached Alejandro, "Hey! Get her into the ambulance! She's definitely got a shit ton of smoke in her lungs! We've found the source of the fire. We'll get working on the inside of her house. Go!" She said, clapping Alejandro on the shoulder before she rushed into Taylor's apartment, dragging a long line of hose behind her. The ambulance was wide open and a stretcher was waiting inside, ready to go. One of the other EMTs, a gentleman named Nathaniel, grabbed the stretcher to get it out. "Bring her here! I'm ready!" @Himbo Tie

“Stand clear!!” Alejandro shouted as he exited the smoke-filled unit, his eyes looking around quickly to make sure he didn’t step out of the smoke and right into one of his fellow firefighters. He was not so much worried about knocking them over or falling himself, but in this moment, he didn’t want the woman in his arms to become the unfortunate meat in a sandwich between two 300+ pound individuals in full gear. Letting his right hand splay out across her upper back to help pull her in closer to him as she coughed and tried to escape the heat and billowing smoke, Alejandro looked out and saw Melinda coming towards him quickly. Melinda had just recently moved to the area, having been a volunteer firefighter for a couple of years where she came from before joining the department here. She brought with her a lot of drive and energy, something that the station was lacking. She also brought a fair amount of beauty, something that the Human Resources department had brought up frequently with the men as they made every attempt possible to keep everyone on track when it came to the job. Alejandro could not say he hadn’t had his moments of looking at her to admire snippets of her beauty, from her midback length black hair to her gray-green eyes that were attentive and seemed to catch everything. There had been times that he knew she had looked up in time to see his glance, their eyes meeting with a small smile from each of them before they went about her business. That meet-cute energy and the budding attraction went out the window as they were on the job however, as Alejandro merely nodded as he passed Melinda and listened to her speak. Turning to face her as he walked backwards a few steps, he called out over the speaker in his helmet, “The beams are coming down fast, be careful in there!!” .
03:31
Seeing her thumb go up in acknowledgement as she waved a few others after her, Alejandro glanced down at his side where his axe and crowbar were in their straps on his belt. He had worried for a moment that he had made the epic rookie mistake of leaving his gear, but he turned to keep walking towards the ambulance. Seeing Nathaniel dropping out of the back with the stretcher, Alejandro walked quicker towards the man before lifting the woman in his arms and setting her down on the stretcher. Taking hold of the side of the stretcher and helping Nathaniel lift her into the ambulance, he turned back towards the fire before climbing in and pulling the doors shut. He switched off the headlamps on his helmet and the oxygen to the mask before pulling it and his helmet off his head. Letting them dangle off his back, he pointed at her ankle so that Nathaniel could busy himself with her broken leg. The other paramedic’s hands moved with expert skill to immobilize her leg at the knee and ankle before applying a splint to her broken leg. It was not the final means of helping her, but it would keep the break from becoming any worse or ripping anything on the way to the hospital. Feeling the vehicle shift beneath them as the ambulance turned on its sirens to start towards the hospital, Alejandro ripped his gloves off before reaching for the gasmask attached to the oxygen system in the ambulance. Bringing the mask to the woman’s face, he held it over her mouth and nose for a few moments while he moved his right hand to get the strap over the back of her head. The oxygen would help to cleanse her lungs of any residual smoke and pump her full of fresh oxygen to start repairing the tissues in her lungs. .
03:32
Smiling kindly as he watched her breathing for a moment, Alejandro would move to start attaching the pulse reader to her index finger so that they could check her vitals. Once it was in place, he gave her body another quick scan before smiling and giving her a thumbs up as he saw nothing else aside from some minor burns on her hands where she had fallen on the burning ground. With her initial needs stabilized, he started unbuckling his gear and setting it to the side of the vehicle while speaking, “We’re gonna get you to the hospital soon. I’m Alejandro and this is Nathaniel. When you feel up for speaking, I need you to tap your hand to your thigh and I’ll remove your mask so we can get your name and details. Do you understand?” @Super Sonic Vava

Taylor's chest was tight and it throbbed with pain. It felt like she had inhaled the fire that had engulfed her condo not even ten minutes ago. The firefighter that had her brought her into the ambulance and set her onto the stretcher. She clutched her chest, sobbing weakly. Her leg was throbbing and her eyes were stinging. Tears ran down her cheeks, leaving streaks against her soot coated cheeks. It resembled smeared makeup but the opposite, pale skin revealed against the darkened soot. As the firefighter pulled the oxygen mask over her face, Taylor quickly pressed it to her jaw, taking deep gasping breaths of the pure air. Her lungs still ached, but the searing pain started to reduce. "There ya go..." Nathaniel said softly as he splinted her leg. Taylor cried out as he adjusted her leg. Nathaniel didn't even flinch. "It'll be alright. Pumping two milligrams of morphine." He said to Alejandro. Something to take the edge off. Taylor's breathing slowed down to normal, and as Alejandro introduced himself, she nodded slowly. She laid her head back on the pillow, the sterile paper crinkling under her. Her blonde hair splayed out underneath her. "M-My...My name is...T-Taylor. Taylor...M-Mc...Allister." She said, coughing between several words. God she was in so much pain. Her pants were ruined, her shirt was destroyed, and now... her house was gone. The sirens were audible inside the ambulance, but they were muffled thankfully. Taylor looked at Alejandro and her eyes met his. "You...You saved... my life." She took his hand in hers, squeezing it as new tears ran down her cheeks. "Thank...Thank you." "Keep taking deep breaths from that mask, Miss. We don't want you passing out back here." Nathaniel said gently. @Himbo Tie

Alejandro nodded when Nathaniel told him the dosage of morphine that had been administered, his hands moving fast to add it to the information on the patient. The information would be given to the hospital personnel when they arrived there, and it was where he would put her name and age as he got them from the patient. Looking down at her as she gasped for air in the mask, Alejandro was reminded of the times in training that he would be forced to remove his gear to learn how to fight through the pain and discomfort of the fire. His eyes moved over her features a moment longer in the safety of the ambulance and Alejandro could not help but feel slightly stunned at how attractive she was. The effects of her tears in the soot were not missed on him, but he had to chew the inside of his lip fiercely to get his mind back on a professional track. There was no excuse for being in an inappropriate state of mind when he was administering aid to someone he had just rescued. Listening to her as she stated her name, Alejandro nodded and smiled as he spoke, adding her name to her information, “Thank you Taylor, I need you to focus on breathing in the mask for me. It will help with your coughing, trust me.” Looking into the woman’s eyes, Alejandro felt his stomach drop as he thought about how bad her situation had just become. He had no idea if she had anywhere that she could crash, but her home was completely ruined. He didn’t doubt his fellow firefighters’ ability to do their jobs, but he had been doing it long enough that he knew when a structure was not salvageable. With the about of supports and struts that he had seen on the ground or had heard cracking above him, Alejandro knew that her home was going to be a total loss if it hadn’t already fallen to the ground now. What if she had nowhere to sleep once she was discharged from the hospital? .
13:03
Feeling Taylor take his hand and squeeze it as tears ran through the soot on her cheeks, Alejandro smiled and nodded slowly to show that he recognized the sentiment and the thankfulness in her expression. Glancing up at Nathaniel as he spoke, Alejandro watched as he turned around to look at the information that was printed out, detailing her personal information as well as medical data. Looking down at Taylor and smiling, Alejandro lifted his free hand and wiped one of her tears gently before speaking in a gentle tone, “You’re welcome, Taylor. I couldn’t leave you in there; it was getting a little warm for my taste.” Smiling as he looked over her slowly, he brought his eyes to the front of the vehicle. Staring into the distance for a moment, he gauged the vehicle’s speed and adjusted his center of balance for a wide, slow turn. Knowing where that meant they were, he nodded and looked down at Taylor and spoke in a warm tone, “We’ll be getting to the hospital soon, and they’ll get you cleaned up and fix your leg. Do you have a relative or anyone you can stay with? Someone we can call to come and pick you up?” @Super Sonic Vava

Taylor pressed the mask against her mouth and nose as Alejandro instructed her to continue doing so. She felt the stinging in her lungs slowly dissipating, and in its place, her lungs just started to throb. She leaned back, her eyes fluttering a little as she regained her breathing. It was slow, but she managed to get her breathing back to a normal rhythm. She hoped the pain would stop soon. As she worked on her breathing, her eyes drifted to Alejandro. Wow... he was really handsome. Was it the smoke inhalation? Or had she gotten the hottest firefighter to be the one to rescue her? Taylor chuckled a little at his joke. "Me...too." She said quietly, her voice crackling from the excessive coughing and the smoke. Thankfully, her lungs no longer stung, and the throbbing was slowly starting to calm down. Just enough to allow her to speak. The only sound that was audible was the beeping of the machines, the whirring of the wheels and the occasional horn blast from the ambulance. Alejandro's voice shook her from the mechanical sounds and ask he asked his questions, Taylor felt her stomach form into knots. Taylor's family did not live locally, and many of them were not around anyway, physically nor emotionally. Taylor moved her gaze to the roof of the ambulance, more tears streaking their way down her cheeks. Her reddened cheeks were now visible under the soot. "I...I don't have... anyone. I tend to... keep to myself. My family is not... local. Or even on... speaking terms with me." She said. "I...I take it my house isn't saved?" He wouldn't be asking about others if it was, but she had to know. "What am I going to do?" She asked, and as she spoke, her voice cracked once again, the tears coming even faster.
15:01
However, there wasn't much time to speak, as the ambulance flew into the hospital ambulance bay. Once the vehicle stopped (rather abruptly), Nathaniel threw the doors open and several nurses and doctors were waiting. "Adult female in her early twenties, smoke inhalation and possible fracture to the lower leg and ankle. Two milligrams of morphine already administered in route." Taylor saw all the doctors and instead of relief, she felt terror. She reached for Alejandro's hand. "P-Please don't go! Please...Please don't leave me alone..." She begged, her voice shaking with fear. @Himbo Tie

How do you tell someone that their house is going to be nothing but an empty carcass, filled with their belongings that have been reduced to nothing but unrecognizable ash? This wasn’t something they trained us for, hell we’re supposed to avoid the topic in general. Leave that for the insurance company you handle. Alejandro glanced down at the tears streaming down Taylor’s cheeks as he thought to himself, weighing his options on what he could or should say. Settling on a more positive outlook, he brought his hand back up and wiped some of the tears from her cheek before resting his hand on the pillow beside her head. Gently taking the mask away as it was not necessarily needed, he spoke in a gentle tone, “What is important is that you made it out alive Taylor. You are here, and you can pick back up.” Smiling kindly as he glanced back towards the door when it opened, Alejandro was shocked slightly when he felt Taylor’s hand grab his. Looking back to her as she spoke, he felt his throat tighten in sorrow and regret for the young woman before him. He had never experienced a loss like this, and he could not imagine the fear and stress running through her mind now that the pain had begun to subside. Looking down at her hand and holding onto it tightly, he swallowed before speaking with a nod, “I’m not going anywhere. I’ll get you inside and then I’ll wait to get you sorted afterwards.” Keeping his hand in hers, Alejandro picked up on the side of the stretcher with his other hand to help Nathaniel with wheeling her out of the back of the ambulance. Walking quickly with the nurses and doctor already commenting to each other on how they were going to handle the patient, Alejandro kept his thumb working in a slow circle on the back of Taylor’s hand to try to keep her calm. He looked down and smiled at her as they walked, trying to keep her calm and not worrying about things. .
22:02
As they got past the automatic doors of the hospital, Alejandro saw a waiting stretcher with a couple of nurses at it that were ready to transfer Taylor to the hospital’s stretcher. As they got in position beside the stretcher, he moved his hand out of Taylor’s in order to pick her up gingerly by her shoulders and move her into the other bed. Looking down at her, he spoke in a calm voice, “Taylor, they’re going to take care of you. I’ll be here when they’re done, and we’ll get everything sorted, trust me.” Squeezing her shoulders gently before the stretcher was wheeled away, Alejandro took a few steps after them before stopping as the ER door closed behind the doctor and nurses. Looking at Nathaniel, he shook his head and placed his hands on the side of the stretcher. Alejandro leaned forward against it and looked down at the soot on the surface before speaking, “I’m going to stay to help her out, need me to grab my shit from the truck?” Nathaniel shook his head before patting him on the shoulder, his words coming next, “You know you can’t do that brother. You gotta come back to the station and get everything situated for the next shift.” Nodding slowly, Alejandro pushed off of the stretcher before walking over to one of the nurses that had greeted them at the ambulance. Smiling as he got to her, Alejandro slipped his hands in his pockets before speaking, “The head nurse will have our number, please give the station a call when Taylor McAllister is getting done in the ER. I promised her I’d help her out, so do me that favor please.” Seeing the nurse nod, Alejandro offered her a kind smile before helping Nathaniel with pushing the stretcher back out to the ambulance. @Super Sonic Vava

Taylor felt instant relief as Alejandro stated that he would be right there with her. He wouldn't leave her. Though she just met him, she felt like she needed some kind of support person right now. His thumb began to circle the back of her hand as she was brought into the emergency room. Nurses surrounded her and she heard them rattling off tests and and orders for specific medications. She had no idea what everyone was saying, but all she heard was Alejandro tell her that he would be waiting for her. She squeezed his hand once more before she was wheeled into the back of the emergency room. Nurses read off her chart and confirmed her date of birth, her medical history, and what had happened. They made sure to question on whether this was intentional, or accidental. Thankfully they let the idea go that she had started the fire. She knew that she was going to have such a hard time with her insurance company, but she would call them later. She just needed to get her ankle fixed. The pain in her ankle was agonizing and she whimpered as one of the nurses touched her ankle. "Grab Dr. Michaels. He'll want to examine this." The nurse said to another nurse who nodded and scurried out. The nurse who touched her ankle smiled sadly. "Don't worry. We'll give you some medicine to help the pain, okay?" Taylor nodded, letting out a soft sigh. "This sucks..." "I bet... It looks painful. You're doing great! Dr. Michaels knows his stuff. He'll make sure your ankle is taken care of." Dr. Michaels came in and did a gentle exam, his fingers carefully pressing on certain spots. "We'll do a quick x-ray, but I think your ankle is only slightly fractured, rather than completely broken." He said. He gave Taylor a smile, trying to be reassuring. One x-ray later, and it was confirmed that she had a small hairline fracture on the ankle bone and all she needed was a hard cast for a few weeks.
14:49
With that, Taylor was wheeled into a room to rest and relax until morning. She would be discharged in the morning, but, where would she go... Taylor felt so uncomfortable, and alone. She wondered if Alejandro was still here. He said he would be... She pressed the call button for the nurses, and a few minutes later a short brunette woman came in. "Yes, hun?" "Is...Is a gentleman, dressed as a firefighter, named Alejandro out in the waiting room? He...He said he would be waiting." "Oh...I didn't see anyone, but, I can check!" Taylor felt her heart sink. He had said he would be waiting... But, then again, he was working. He wasn't hers, and he barely knew her. She sighed softly and laid back in bed. As the brunette woman left Taylor's room, the head nurse that Alejandro grabbed pulled her aside and gave her the number Alejandro left. "Give him a call and let him know she's awake and ready for visitors." The brunette nodded and dialed Alejandro's number. @Himbo Tie

The next few hours of his shift flew by as Alejandro and Nathaniel returned to the scene of the fire, the Hispanic man already wearing his fire-resistant gear again when he climbed out of the back of the ambulance. Giving Nathaniel a thumbs up as he jogged away from the ambulance, he looked around him and saw that there were no victims being rushed out of the building anymore. The fires had been put out, and the fire hoses had been pulled back from the charred remains of the homes that earlier in the day had supported people’s hopes and dreams. Walking across the grass to stand beside Melinda and a few other fire fighters, Alejandro bumped his fist against her upper arm before speaking, “I see you did as well as we can hope from a volunteer.” Melinda turned to look at him with a grin, her gray-green eyes taking in the smile on his face before she shrugged. Rolling her eyes in a playful manner, she punched his arm softly before replying with a smirk, “A lot better than a career can do it would seem. Mister ‘I’m going to run away from the fire.’” Alejandro shook his head and laughed softly, knowing that there was no reason to defend himself by saying that he had been put on paramedic duty. Melinda already knew that and was merely busting his balls, much like any of the others in the fire station would do to each other in order to keep their spirits up. Nothing could curb the pain that could be seen on the faces of the survivors, so the fire fighters and other first responders resorted to humor to try to keep from feeling the pain and dread. Each of those burnt-out husks held memories and important documents that were now nothing more than ash. It hurt to acknowledge that fact and watch the people look upon the wreckage, so they distracted each other. .
02:33
Bumping his hand against Melinda’s shoulder before stepping back, Alejandro whistled softly to get the attention of three other junior fire fighters that were standing and looking at the charred wood. Seeing them turn slowly to look at him, he nodded slowly before gesturing to them to follow him as he turned and started to walk back towards the trucks. Alejandro picked up one of the various fire hoses and started to roll it up in his hands. Looking at each of them for a moment, he smiled before speaking in a friendly tone, “It sucks, I know. I wish we could get here early enough to save every building or home we get called to, but that’s not always our reality. Our reality is doing our best and training so that it doesn’t happen again. Help me clean up, and I’ll make you all forget this with some good food.” Food was a tool that men and women on the force used just like humor – a device that could distract you from the moment and bring a sense of comfort to a miserable situation. The fire fighters moved quickly to help him pack up their equipment, Melinda standing particularly close to him as she wound up another hose. He couldn’t help but glance over and smirk as he saw her handling it with perfect precision, working the thick hose like it weighed nothing and wanted to listen to her like an obedient pet. He shouldn’t have let his eyes wander, for as soon as he finished his and stood, Alejandro was aware of the grin and glance that Melinda gave him from under the brim of her hat. Walking with a warm fuzz in his stomach, he loaded up the truck alongside the others before climbing into the front to sit next to the driver. It did not take them long to return to the station, at which point the garage duty fire fighters organized the trucks while he and others undressed and moved back into the living quarters. Having returned to wearing only his work pants, T-shirt, and boots, Alejandro was the first one to the kitchen where he found the rice cooker waiting for him.

Starting up a batch of rice with some tomatoes and seasoning poured into the rice, Alejandro started preparing the ingredients needed for his quesadillas. It took about thirty minutes for it all to get finished, and as he turned to the counter with plates of food, he smirked when he saw the others in the station filing into a line for food. The meal was well received by the others, as he knew it would be. Not only because they were all hungry from a few repeat calls, but because he had made a name for himself as being a good cook when he felt like it. The remainder of the shift was spent cleaning up the firehouse and trucks, some of the staff talking about meeting up for drinks to celebrate having the weekend off. Alejandro was walking out to his personal vehicle, a red Jeep Wrangler on off-road wheels, after showering and changing clothes, when his phone started to buzz in his pocket. Reaching in and grabbing his phone, he answered it quickly and waved the others past him as he turned towards his vehicle to muffle some of their words in order to hear the other person better. Recognizing them as the nurse, Alejandro smiled and thanked her for the update on Taylor before promising to be there soon. Slipping his phone back into his pocket, Alejandro turned to the others with a sheepish grin before shaking his head and walking around his Jeep. Ignoring their complaints and jeers at him for never having any fun, Alejandro smirked and opened the door to climb in. As he was pulling the door shut, he heard a knock on his passenger side window. Looking over and seeing Melinda standing with a smirk, Alejandro rolled down the window after starting the engine. Raising an eyebrow at her with a grin, he shrugged before speaking, “Anything I can help you with Mindy? The others are going for drinks if you want to join, but I’ve got something I have to take care of.” .

Melinda grinned before shaking her head and speaking in a lower tone, obviously working to mimic his tone, “Oh, is Taylor doing okay? Thank you so much, I’ll be there as soon as I can.” Rolling his eyes as Melinda laughed and turned to walk away, Alejandro sighed before rolling the window back up and pulling out of the parking lot. It was a short drive from the station to the hospital, and he was able to make his way in quickly after finding a fortunate parking spot near the front. Walking up to the front desk, he identified himself and was directed to the correct room. Knocking on the door gently, Alejandro waited to be greeted and allowed entry. He was wearing a pair of gray cargo shorts and a light blue T-shirt, as well as a pair of black converses. It was a stark difference from his fire gear, but he hoped that Taylor would still recognize him from before. @Super Sonic Vava

Taylor waited in her room for a bit. She clicked through the channels on the remote control for the TV, which was just a rather small and chunky old TV, but it got the job done well enough. She settled on watching an old game show for a while. Laying back in the hospital bed, she shut her eyes and just rested for a bit. She was still in shock from the day's events, and she just... she couldn't process things right now. She was so tired from the medicine and the pain that she just felt too weak to even begin to think about her situation. She didn't know when she fell asleep, but she was unable to actually sleep well. She tossed and turned and when she finally did get to sleep, she was plagued with nightmares. Her biggest one involved her in her living room, but this time, she was unable to smell the fire. She suddenly felt hot, really, hot... then pain began to spread through her entire body. She looked down and she saw her body ablaze with fire, the flames burning her skin. Her skin turned black and peeled away, the stinging pain spreading to her entire body. She screamed, but the smoke burned her lungs so badly that she was unable to scream more than once. She dropped to the ground, unable to scream, and all she felt... was unrelenting agony... She shot up from her bed, gasping and shaking. She was covered in sweat and she immediately wrapped her arms around herself, one hand covering her mouth as she sobbed, her shoulders shaking as she struggled to breathe properly. That nightmare had been far too real, and perhaps it was what could have happened... had she not been saved. She jumped when she heard a knock on her door. She called for whoever was there to entire and when she saw it was Alejandro, she felt almost a sense of safety. "You...You came!" She said, her eyes wide, but red from crying. She did recognize him, but he did look a little different without his uniform. He was still handsome, and she wouldn't deny that.
16:27
She couldn't get up from her bed, especially since she was attached to numerous machines, but she waved him over. "I...I didn't know if you were going to be able to come visit... I wanted to thank you again for saving me, Alejandro." She rubbed her arm, her skin goose pimpled from her nightmare. She was still terrified from her dream and she knew she wasn't going to be able to calm down anytime soon. @Himbo Tie

Hearing Taylor’s voice calling for him to come into her room, Alejandro felt a warmth buzz through his stomach for a moment before he was able to control it. Why was he feeling something like this for someone he had just met? Was there something wrong with him? It didn’t feel appropriate to have this flutter of happiness from hearing a stranger’s voice, but he didn’t take the time to dwell on it. Placing his hand on the door handle, he eased the door open as he stepped in. His eyes immediately took in the multitude of machines that Taylor was attached to, but he knew that they all had to be for some purpose or another. They wouldn’t have her hooked up to something she didn’t need. Hearing her words of surprise, Alejandro grinned and chuckled softly before nodding. He could see the surprise in her eyes, evidenced by how wide they were at seeing him, but he could also easily see the way her eyes were red and tearing up. Something had been bothering her, and Alejandro felt an immediate flare of protectiveness wash over his being. Looking around quickly to try to find what might have upset her that was in the room, he breathed out deeply before smiling and stepping deeper into the room. Seeing a chair to the side, he grabbed it and pulled it over before sitting down beside the hospital bed. “Of course, I came; I told you I would, didn’t I?” Grinning slightly as she thanked him again for saving her, Alejandro nodded before leaning forward in the chair slightly. Resting his arms on the side of the bed and clasping his hands together, he glanced up at Taylor’s arms which carried goose bumps up them. Narrowing his eyes for a moment as he glanced up at the ceiling, Alejandro looked for an air conditioning vent that may have been blowing down on her and chilling her in the bed. Seeing nothing and then glancing into her red eyes, he nodded slowly as he recognized that it must be from fear or some other extreme emotion that she was feeling. .
12:57
Smiling kindly as he lowered his left hand to rest over her forearm gently, Alejandro nodded at her words and closed his eyes before opening them again to look up at her. It was a silent response of recognizing her thanks, but he realized that she may want an actual answer in a moment like this. Squeezing her arm gently, Alejandro smiled and spoke in a kind tone, “I had to finish my shift, but I wasn’t going to leave you alone here, Taylor. I didn’t carry you out of that building just to leave you on your lonesome.” Alejandro winked as he finished speaking, his cheeks drawing up as his lips split into a grin. Glancing at the machines that she was attached to, he noted her heart rate and oxygen levels before nodding. They were all within safe regions, so her care here would be coming to an end. That was good for the sake of her getting to leave the hospital, but he couldn’t help the nagging thought at the back of his mind. She didn’t have a home to go to, and she didn’t have any family that she could call up. Clearing his throat softly, Alejandro looked up into Taylor’s eyes as he spoke, “If you don’t...you know...have anywhere to stay, I have a spare bedroom in my house if you would be comfortable staying there until you can get a settlement from your insurance. I understand if you don’t want to, and I’m not meaning anything sideways with this. I just remember you saying you don’t have anywhere to go, and your apartment isn’t suitable for you to return to tonight.” @Super Sonic Vava

Taylor smiled as Alejandro sat down beside her, his hands coming to rest on her forearm. The air conditioner was running and she reached over and grabbed the tiny remote and she turned it off. "Whew, it was cold in here..." She said, feeling a shiver run down her back. The hospital room was natural cold, and this could be due to the cold feeling of being stuck in the hospital, or perhaps the air conditioner. Who knows. As Alejandro said that he was going to leave her on her lonesome, she couldn't help the small tears that ran down her cheeks. "Thank you..." She whispered, squeezing his hand lightly. "I was... I was really scared, Alejandro. If.. If you hadn't been there then I..." She stopped, not wanting to think about it further. It hurt to even consider what could have happened. The more she thought about it, the nurses and doctors had told her that she was stable and was only here for observation for a day or two. After that, she was going to be discharged. But, if she was discharged, where would she go? Her chest tightened as she came to the total realization that her home was gone! Taylor wasn't close with any of her family, and the only family that she did talk to lived across the country. She leaned back in the bed, her eyes shutting as she struggled to not breakdown. What was she going to do? She didn't have enough money to live in a hotel for months while the insurance handled the payments and then finding a new place to live. Tears ran down her cheeks and she gripped the blanket, her fingers shaking. However, as if by magic, or by some miracle, Alejandro suddenly offered for her to stay in his spare bedroom. Her eyes widened. She looked at him, her eyes meeting his. "A-Alejandro? Are you serious? I...I could never ask you to do that!" She said, her voice soft and completely filled with shock. Why would he offer a stranger a room in his house? What if she was a murderer? Not that she was!

"I...I would pay for utilities and groceries and I'd definitely help with the cleaning and cooking. I wouldn't be able to accept this unless you let me help contribute. I-If you...If you'd accept that then, I...I would be grateful to accept your offer." She reached for his hand and she squeezed it, her eyes full of hope, fear, and excitement. This horrible event was possibly going to turn around! @Himbo Tie

Alejandro let his eyes move slowly over Taylor’s face as she laid her head back on the pillow, her mind obviously in its own realm of distress and worry that he could see from the way her eyes glazed over as she stared into the distance. He knew how her sentence would have ended: if he hadn’t been there to get her, she would have died in that fire. Swallowing thickly as he lowered his gaze to where his hand rested on her arm, Alejandro moved his other hand to join his current one and held gently to her. It was always a real possibility that he had to keep in mind when he was running into the inferno of a house fire: the residents could be dead or beyond saving. He could to this day remember the first death he had seen on the job. A faulty wire of a sound system in the basement had sparked a fire within the walls of the house, wrecking the stability of the house before any visual signs of a fire could be seen. The family had been watching TV with each other and eating dinner when suddenly the picture on the TV started to glow strangely. Out of nowhere, the wall behind the TV exploded into fire and shattered the TV and the family’s peace. While going through the house to clear out the residents, Alejandro had found the father pinned against the burning couch with a chunk of the TV lodged in his head. Letting his mind fall back into the present, Alejandro smiled as his gaze met Taylor’s widened eyes. Nodding to answer her question, he squeezed her arm gently before speaking with a grin, “Yeah, of course I’m serious. I know I just met you, but I can’t just leave you here without some kind of roof over your head. I couldn’t sleep at night with myself knowing that you were here not knowing what you were going to do. As you’re not some kind of murderer or somebody that likes to run on the treadmill while others are sleeping, I’ve got no reason not to offer you this help.” .
10:35
Hearing her offering to help around the house and with the utility payments, Alejandro smiled and nodded slowly as his hands held onto her forearm. He had had a roommate before, and what she was offering was part of what he would expect from a roommate again. Squeezing her hand back gently when she held onto his, Alejandro spoke in a soothing voice, “That sounds perfect to me. I work enough and make enough that you don’t need to pay any kind of rent or anything, but I would definitely appreciate the help around the house. Unless you eat like a racehorse or take thirteen showers a day, I’ll still cover the utilities and groceries. Honestly, having you help with the cleaning and cooking is enough for me to agree to this.” Offering her a warm smile, he nodded quickly before glancing up at the machine panels again. There wasn’t much that he believed would need to be checked on, so it had to be close to the time that she would get discharged. Looking back down to her, he grinned before speaking, “I’ll go ask the nurse how close you are to being able to leave if you want? I know how uncomfortable hospital beds can be.” @Super Sonic Vava

Taylor was so surprised by Alejandro's kindness. No one had ever just offered her a place to live, especially after such a traumatic event like her condo burning to the ground around her. Taylor squeezed Alejandro's hand once more, completely touched. He was pleased with her offering of cleaning and cooking. "I don't run on a treadmill when people sleep, and I promise not to waste the water or your food." She laughed, shaking her head. He was far too kind, and it was so sweet of him to let her stay with him! She would start making a plan once she saw his home on how to keep it as clean as possible. She already had several recipes that she could make, and even bring to lunch! She knew he worked, so, maybe having some homemade lunches (if he didn't make them himself) would be better than eating out. Taylor didn't know what Alejandro did. But she wanted to learn. As Alejandro spoke about leaning to go see when she could leave, the door opened up. A tall nurse with dark curly brown hair came in. She wore a pair of navy blue scrubs and a clip board was in her hand. Another individual came in after her, a tall male doctor with shoulder length blonde hair and piercing green eyes smiled at them both. "Hello, I'm Dr. Tristan Manning. This is my nurse, Ashley." He pressed the dispenser for some hand sanitizer and he rubbed his hands together as he approached Taylor's bedside. "Hi, Taylor. It's nice to meet you. I couldn't help but over hear your friend here wondering when you could leave. You can actually leave first thing tomorrow morning. Your bloodwork and scans all came back clean, but I'd like to monitor you overnight just to make sure the smoke hasn't done any damage that's just... hiding." He said. "Plus, I need to order you some pain medicine and a brace for that ankle. Thankfully it isn't broken, but it's definitely sprained pretty bad." He moved the blanket and gentle touched her bruised ankle. "There is a very small hairline fracture, and while it doesn't re

quire surgery, you will need a walking boot and a brace to ensure it doesn't jostle around and turn into a break." He said, giving her a reassuring smile. "But, in a few months, you'll be right as rain!" He looked at Alejandro, giving him the same smile. Once Dr. Manning confirmed that she could go home in the morning, Taylor felt relieved. Ashley took her vitals and administered some more pain medicine and antibiotics. Then, the two departed once more. Taylor looked at Alejandro, blushing a little with nervousness. "Should I get a taxi for tomorrow? If you want to leave your address I can have them bring me. I-I...I don't want to bother you anymore than I already have." @Himbo Tie

Taylor’s laugh was something that Alejandro quickly decided he needed to hear as often as possible. It was a beautiful sound for one, but it was also a good sign that no matter the traumatic event she had just suffered through, she was willing to try and see the humor in life. Grinning and nodding slowly, Alejandro looked over her face slowly before glancing up at the ceiling. Pursing his lips and holding them to the side in an exaggerated face as if he were deep in thought, he chuckled softly as he glanced down at her before speaking, “Sounds like a plan then. I’ll get you settled in at my house as soon as we can. I’ve got the next couple days off, so we’ll have time to work out some kind of schedule or arrangements if you’d like.” Grinning to try and reassure her that he was serious about the offer, Alejandro realized that he would also really enjoy having company again. He had been living alone for a while now, and he was not going to lie to himself anymore – living alone was lonely and sucked. He was about to push up from his place in the chair beside the bed when he heard the door starting to open. Settling back down and resting his left hand on the bed beside Taylor’s arm, Alejandro placed his right hand on his thigh and pushed against it to turn and face the door to see who was coming in. Seeing the doctor and nurse coming in, Alejandro scooted over with the chair to move closer to the head of the bed. He didn’t want to get in the way of the doctor coming to check on Taylor, and he knew that her main concerning injury was on her ankle. It wouldn’t do any good for him to sit in their way and not let them check on her. He listened quietly as Tristan introduced himself, nodding as a form of silent recognition and reception of his introduction before paying attention to the medical talk. It made sense to hold her for review after the smoke inhalation she had suffered, so Alejandro had no comments there. .
03:54
One big surprise, though, was the fact that Taylor’s ankle was not broken. He had moved the beam off her himself and knew how heavy it was, but she must have just been very lucky. Meeting her gaze, he offered her a wink and grin while nodding towards her ankle. Alejandro watched the doctor lift the blanket before gingerly touching Taylor’s injury. He felt an immediate need to tell him to be careful, but he had to trust the other medical professional to know what he was doing. Turning his attention back to Taylor, he offered her another smile while waiting for the nurse and doctor to leave. Once they had and she spoke, Alejandro tilted his head back and forth in thought slowly before speaking, “I don’t mind coming down here and picking you up, Taylor. I don’t have any plans, but if you’d rather use a taxi or riding service, I understand. Whichever way you feel better, I just don’t want you having to spend any more money.” Shrugging as he finished, Alejandro leaned to the right in his chair while reaching his left hand down to grab his wallet from his back pocket. Opening it quickly, he pulled out a white business card with the fire station’s symbol on it and several names written on it. In the middle was the name Alejandro Ramirez with his phone number. The back of the card held his address on it as well as the address of the fire station. It was a card used to get information after a witness had had some time to think and had been able to recall what they forgot on the scene of the emergency. @Super Sonic Vava

"If you don't mind coming to pick me up, that would be wonderful! I just didn't want to put you out anymore than I have already." She explained. She didn't want to over use his kindness by asking for him to do ever more like picking her up from the hospital. Alejandro's kindness was unlike anyone she had ever met. He was calm, gentle, and sweet, and they had only met several hours ago. It should be strange. He shouldn't be here right now, looking after her and caring for her as if they had been friends for decades. But, here he was. She reached over and took the business card. "Thank you, Alejandro." She smiled, setting the card on top of her bedside table. "I am so grateful to you, Alejandro. Truly. I will make sure that I make this up to you, or at least help out so that you're not taking care of some invalid." She was completely against being just some lazy bum while she recovered. She was going to clean, cook, and ensure that if she could work, she would so that she could pay for some bills. It was getting late, and the medications that Taylor was on for pain started to make her feel sleepy. She let out a yawn and she covered her mouth. "Oh wow. Those medicines are really making me sleepy." She said quietly, laying back on the bed. The pillow wasn't comfortable, but she didn't really care. "I'll give you a call in the morning when they start to discharge me?" She said, her eyes meeting his. "Does that sound okay?" @Himbo Tie
