To learn that a whole group of gods wanted her gone all because Mitus loved her was a revelation to Melisande. She never felt as though she controlled her husband. If he was upset, she calmed him. If he was unsure of something, she helped him work it out.
She looked at Cass and took a deep breath. Despite her spouse being so angry, she approached the other goddess. “I think you’re misunderstanding my relationship with Mitus and the love we share for one another. I’m not at all controlling Mitus. If he wants to he could kill you, even if I don’t want him to. He left it up to me because you’re attacking me. I don’t want you dead, because unlike you, I’ve lived with the mortals when a deity is taken away. And I’ve felt the power high you’re on. I promise you, that high will get to be too much. It’ll start to hurt and drive you insane. So no. I don’t want you dead. We’re all important. We all need each other. If we start killing each other, it’ll be a short war and end in absolute nothingness.”
She offered Cass her hand to help her stand. “I don’t want you dead, but I’m not letting you off the hook either. You see you will never be loved. By anyone. At all. I also added love to your heart so you will love someone, but they won’t even be attracted to you. Not even your silly tricks will get that person to even look at you. I’ll take it all away after you learn the pain I suffered being in the mortal realm alone. At least I’m sparing you the horrors of having Sol torment you.”
