Cold. Chills gnawed at her spine as a cold breeze pushed past her. Alea had never liked the cold. It didn't help that she didn't have clothes warm enough to protect her from the harsh breeze though. Things like that were only afforded to those of class Optimum, those who were considered worth protecting from nature's forces. After all, they were high stock goods whereas those from Medietas were nothing more than normal stock. A sigh pushed through her lips, her gaze idly watching as her breath grew cold in the air. Somehow it only made it feel colder when she could see the vapors condensing in front of her eyes. Her fingers felt frozen as she looked down to the shovel in her hands, her knuckles almost blue from having been out there so long. Shifts felt longer in the winter. After all, they didn't allow breaks very often and that meant that work seemed to drag even longer when it was cold. She wasn't the only one who was cold. That certainly was clear. Her gaze softened as she scanned over the field. It was almost comedic that they were being forced to plow the fields at such a time. She wondered if the vampires knew the winter would kill any crop that they planted anyway. She was sure they didn't care. After all, they didn't eat such foods. The food that they were planting was intended for class Medietas and lower. Not even class optimum would bother with such food, as the vegetables that they would eat would be stored through the winter while the lower classes remained without such nutrients for many winters. Alea's gaze fell to a younger girl, one who was probably only seven or eight, her arms shivering as the light jacket she wore seemingly struggled to hold up against the harsh breeze of winter. She paused and walked over to her, kneeling down and taking her own coat off, wrapping it around the girl's shoulders. "They'll yell if you stop working... we only get four shifts a week. Best bet is to rest when you can to save up your energy." She said soft

ly, placing her hand on the child's head and ruffling her hair. "Go on then, don't let them know that you're cold." She smiled, ignoring the breeze that now brushed at her bare arms. With a bold smile, Alea returned her hands to her shovel and began to work again, the sweat that dripped down her arms and neck only making it colder as she pushed herself to remain moving. Moving was the only way to stave off cold like this. If you didn't you would end up overwhelmed by it. It would win without doubt. The cold was ruthless and refused to show any pity. And it certainly didn't seem to care that Alea had been doing a child a favor. "Why do you do stuff like that?" A man nearby questioned, his gaze flicking over to her as he continued to shovel away the dirt. "You'll freeze your ass off in a shirt like that..." He scoffed, shaking his head, "No one else gets special treatment anyway. You'll just soften her up by treating her all nice." "So be it." She noted softly, pushing her hair out of her eyes as she worked. "Everyone needs a hand sometimes... I promise to offer you mine in your time of need as well." She softened, her green eyes lifting towards the man. "She's only been on shift for a week... Apparently she used to be class optimum... blood quality can change as you get older." She explained, ignoring the breeze as it harassed her. "It must be a hard transition." "Even more reason as to not treat her kindly. You'll spoil her." Alea frowned and looked at the man, "As I said, so be it. It's not your decision what I do..." She sighed, her gaze softening as she glanced towards the lower level vampires who were on guard at the moment. "They're watching... better not step your toe out of line." She warned. "I'll do what the hell I want! I'm sick of this! You show everyone else respect, why not me!?" "Respect is earned. What I give is kindness, wait your turn."
12:37
Perhaps she had pushed too far because before she knew it, he was barreling towards her, full steam ahead. He was several years older than her and his stature was much taller, her eyes widening as she tumbled into the dirty. It was mere seconds before a fist met with her stomach, forcing air out of her breath as the man ruthlessly began to pound down on her, shoving punch after punch into her body. So much for kindness. It was long before the guards were running towards him, pulling him off of her and yanking her to her feet. "What the hell is going on here?" They questioned, though Alea herself was far too dizzy to respond. "You trying to kill her?" He scolded the man, "You'll be visiting the praecepta after your shift! NOW GET BACK TO WORK!" He yelled, his voice demanding and clear as it seemingly bit through the cold, echoing in everyone's ears. "Oi... Stand up on your own." The other guard poked at her, ignoring the blood dripping from her nose and mouth. "Fuck.." He sighed, "I'll bring this one to the infirmary..." He noted to the other guard, sighing as he lifted her into his arms and began to walk. When she awoke, Alea was staring up at a white ceiling, her eyes still blurry. "What the hell happened--" She muttered under her breath, blinking the fuzziness from her eyes before sitting up, her gaze falling on the only other person within the infirmary. "Uhmmm... who're you?"

"Doll." He murmured quietly. It was almost inaudible, like he was trying to whisper so softly just to himself, but she quickly looked up, biting the inner corner of her cheek. His crimson eyes were colder then the storm raging around them as he glanced down at her, "What do you see?" He asked, gesturing outwardly to the field surrounding the area. Crownless anxiously glanced up at him. He smiled wickedly, his sharp teeth showing off as he did so, "Good girl. You may speak." Now, it took her a moment to clear her throat, she parted her lips as anxiety spread throughout her body, the adrenaline coursing. "A um Field, Sir?" She asked, looking up at him with eyes full of worry. He simply nodded, placing his hand on her waist gripping it tightly. "Mhm, and do you know what kind of humans work here?" He asked, his voice soft. She shook her head. "It's where the Meditas work, wasting away as they hopelessly plant seeds into frozen soil, waiting on a miracle to sprout up from the ground to keep themselves alive." She opened her mouth to speak, but before air could even enter her lungs a tight pull snapped her back. "You weren't trying to speak were you doll," It was phrased as a question, but the venomous anger in his voice told her otherwise. She quickly shook her head, and before he could say anything else, in the distance there was yelling. Both if their heads turned towards it, watching as a guard yanked a man off of someone. Her eyes widened once more, as she tugged onto his sleeve. He shot a glare at her, "What." He spat, standing at his full height. 7'5. God, it was terrifying especially with her short stature. "Do you want to be a Medietas? I mean I could make it to where you a Vilis, if I really wanted to." He threatened, moving closer to her causing her to flinch away.*

But before she felt a sudden hit, which she expected, a hand ran itself through her hair, causing her to peek from her defensive pose. He was suddenly looking at her softly, continuing to run his sharp claws through her hair. Holding her closer to him. "Alright, love. Come along." He began to walk, and she quickly followed behind. It wasn't difficult getting past all of the security given Horrid was known in the vampire relam. And with a name like that, it wasn't too hard to figure out why. Once they arrived, he did most of the talking, just occasionally petting her hair, before they guided them to the room. "Alright, I have to get some things sorted, you can go say hi." As he walked away, she listened for his footsteps to grow further and further- *Once they were out of ear shot she sighed, opening the door, letting the light from the hall trickle in as she stepped into the room, turning on one of the lights. Alea's voice startled her, as she quickly glanced up, feeling that adrenaline coursing before letting out a sigh. The blonde made her way over, sitting in one of the little chair by the bed, as she glanced around the room, then at the door, before looking back at Alea. Her panicked expression softened as she smiled. "I'm sorry for the intrusion um-" She scanned the room again, letting out a sigh, "My name is Crownless, what's yours?" She asked softly, so softly it was barely a whisper. Her blue eyes now focused on Alea's face as she stood up, tilting her head slightly, "I saw what happened, well- part of it at least. Does that always happen here? Do-" She paused trying to think of the right words. "Do you always get hurt like this?" Her mind was racing with thoughts, she'd never actually been able to /talk/ to any of these people, only ever look from a far, and thank Horrid everyday for not making her just like them. (edited)
14:13
But talking to one, being able to see just how tired, just how desperate they looked it broke her heart.* It was hard to even fathom that they treated humans this poorly, she knew why but it still wasn't right. "I'm sorry..." She muttered, the whole time her voice was quiet. Really quiet, but with that last statement you would almost think she hadn't meant to say it aloud.

Crownless. A fitting name for one who was noble and yet lived a life of a slave. Royal and yet without a crown. Alea had never known one with a name like that. It was an indicator of class in reality, having names like such. She had heard about it vaguely when she went for feedings. Vampires who talked of their pets while feasting on them, vampires who dreamed of having a pet of their own one day. They named them silly names like Faith or Love or even Princess. Names that Alea found were alone enough to demoralize her. She assumed it must be demoralizing to live with a name as silly as that, heart breaking in many ways. She paused softly, her gaze connecting with that of the white hair girls. Or perhaps you would call it blonde. She looked like a pet, her hair too fluffy and soft in appearance for her to be of the same class. Most of the medietas were clean and yet their lives weren't necessarily easy like that of an Optimum. They worked hard and yet at night they were allowed to return home to apartments where they would rest for hours on end. While it was little to enjoy, their lives weren't torturous in comparison to the vilis who lived the lives of slaves, mere work horses that weren't even used for feeding. Many vilis didn't make it to the age of 10, dying early from the harsh strain of work that they were forced to do. At least in the case of the medietas, their work was reasonable, while hard. Hard work. Despite the fact that it wasn't easy, Alea knew it was idiotic to take advantage of the rank that she held. It wouldn't take much to lower her quality of blood, after all, that would be the only way to force one to another rank. She assumed that was what had happened to the young girl. It wasn't necessarily a rare occurrence but it never lasted very long. Usually their punishments and time in medietas was a brief punishment to teach them to respect their place and to truly understand the point of it. It was easy to say that after a brief time in medi

etas, most of their pets quickly returned to their masters with a renewed love for their place. Alea paused and rubbed the back of her neck, her head still pounding from the pounding that she had received. She felt dizzy in a way she had not felt in a long time, her head spinning as she sat up and looked towards the girl, unsure of why she was apologizing for her. It wasn't as if she owned the place. It indeed wasn't her first visit and yet she well understood the fact that it wouldn't be the last. She paused and shook her head, almost laughing at her, "Not always." She giggled, red hair falling in her eyes as she looked at the girl. While the girl may have been looking down on her, Alea was relatively pretty. Pretty enough to be considered a pet of her own despite the lower quality of her blood. She had stunning red hair that fell down her back in a cascade of waves and green eyes that were a startling shade of green. And her smile along seemed to brighten up as she looked at the naive girl, not necessarily seeming all that pitiful. "Only when I start a fight." She noted, shrugging slightly. "What're you apologizing for?" She asked with a slight tilt of her head. "Don't look at me like that... It's not like one of the vampires did it to me." She sighed, running a hand through her hair. "I'm not as pitiful as you seem to think, I'd prefer you don't think of it as such..." She frowned, not enjoying the look that the girl was looking at her with. It was too easy to read, to read the way that she was pitying her, the way she was worried for her. Alea wasn't one to accept those kinds of stares. She would much rather be hated than pitied. She lived life the way she wanted and wouldn't accept such feelings. @Crownless

Crownless paused as she felt Alea's eyes study her. Her copper cheeks beginning to grow a darker shade. She wasn't one for being stared at, due to how vampire and people alike already stared, having a one on one and being stared at felt- weirder. Though it was true most pets got their name from their masters, but she had a name before that, they all did. Now being forbidden to ever say it or use it, less they get a punishment deserving of it, like removing your tongue, or getting your new name branded on you. One of the only things she knows from not only witnessing it, but experiencing it. Regardless, she leaned closer, watching Alea curiously as she moved, tilting her head. The injuries weren't too bad, but still being hurt at all is less then favorable, so she couldn't help but worry. She moved her head back a bit, eyes widening slightly when Alea- giggled? She actually laughed? That was certainly new. Whenever Crownless did see a Medietas they certainly didn't smile, and definitely weren't laughing. Her eyes seemed to light up at Alea's next words. "Medietas fight too?" She questioned softly, tilting her head. Her curiosity was getting the better of her, it was heartbreaking but still so fascinating to actually be able to talk like this with someone, another human who wasn't hopelessly brainwashed. She then realized she was staring and quickly shook her head, "Sorry, I just- I mean where I'm from humans don't ever fight. So it's just-" She paused, it looked like she wanted to say more, but something was holding her back.

"Ah, it's a habit." She replied, only to furrow her eyebrows at Alea's next statement. "What? No, no, no I'm not- Sorry um I'm not like this because of anything you did it's just... I have to listen out. I'm sorry." She tried to explain, but Crownless didn't want to scare her by revealing her master was Horrid, his presence, no his name sent Shockwaves through everyone a lasting ripple effect that made even Vampire with their own pets tip-toe. *Pitiful..? Her eyes widened as she vigorously shook her head, "It's not pity, so much as... empathy? I think that's the right word. I'm not looking down at you, I know a lot of Optimum's might, but-" She sighed, once again trying to find her words, but it seemed no matter what she was going to trip over them. "I'm-" She paused catching herself, "S-" She let out an annoyed huff clearly frustrated with herself. The girl was meek, very timid and weak looking more like a doll, dainty and porcelain, easily broken, but there definitely was more there. Especially with that huff she let out. "I can't seem to break that habit, but I was wondering. What happened out there? What do Medietas do all day? I know that's probably a silly question to you, but I just- what's it like to be able to decide things like what to eat, how to interact with others, who you'll fight with next?" *Crownless stopped, she was sitting in the chair again, rhythmically tapping her foot on the ground as her leg bounced, "I'm sorry, I'm making it sound like you're free, but... I just- it's hard to explain the questions I have, and you don't have to answer them I just know I'll probably never get a chance like this again." Her blue eyes were glued to the ground, as her mind continued to wander, so many questions with so little time. And with Horrid being not too far if he heard he would- Without realizing it she shook her head as if trying to shake those thoughts away.

Alea Maroun BOT 28-Feb-23 09:20 AM
Fluffy. It was the best word that Alea could use to describe the girl who stood in front of her. She looked as if she were a porcelain doll, her skin pale and unblemished, of course, excluding her neck. After all, most wore collars of bruises, necklaces of skin stained with the puncture marks. Even Alea, did. Her neck was stained with the marks, black and blue from where they had puncture into her skin with their sharp teeth. Yet everyone in Medietas wore other kinds of scars too. Alea had them all over her body. On her knees from falling, on her back for attempting to run away, on shoulders and even the backs of her thighs. Of course, most from punishments. But she knew she was not the only one who bore these scars, bore scars as if they were things to be proud of. Scars. Alea paused and looked at the girl, wondering if she would crack if she toppled her over. She looked as if she would. As if she were made of glass. As if she were fragile and quiet, as if she needed to be protected. Of course, that didn't mean that Alea thought that she had it entirely easy. After all, being a doll could be a prison in it's own sense. Alea liked her freedom. Freedom. She knew that she had only tasted a brief hint of it, and that was what kept her running, kept her pushing towards a new goal each day. One day, she knew that her fighting would pay off. One day, they would find a reality where humans wouldn't exist as livestock. One day, she believed they could live freely once more. She paused and looked at the girl, smirking, "Wanna find out?" She stood up, though she quickly found out that her head was not yet ready for another fight. She had seemingly gotten hit in the head harder than she had thought. She rubbed her forehead and let herself fall back into bed, sighing slightly, "Yeah course we do. When we gotta." She noted, "Fight with one another, with them too. Don't want them to think we're afraid of them." She grinned, "After all, if they were gonna kill me they

woulda already done it." She shrugged, talking in a way that made it clear that while beautiful, she was unrefined. She didn't even talk in the same way that an Optimum would, her language less graceful and refined. She paused and looked at the girl, "Oh really?" She raised an eyebrow, "Why not?" She asked, stretching her arms above her head. Alea knew plenty of Optimum's, or at least she had met many during their brief punishments in Medietas. She found it funny the way they ran back to their master's without question. As if the way that the Medietas lived was too dirty or hard on them. Their skin was too thin, that was Alea thought. "Well cut it out." She glared slightly. "I don't give a shit about your empathy. I never wanted to be some asshole's pet anyway. And even if one did want me, I'd spit in their face and get sent right back. Don't empathize with me. I'm surviving just fine. I'm going to make it here whether they like it or not... I'll get out of this hell hole and leave you all behind. Words like this were considered treason. Alea knew such. It didn't stop her from claiming it. She could handle another whipping. Add to the scars. What didn't kill her would make her stronger, right? A frown curled along her lips at the girl's fretting and questioning. It must've been interesting to her. A fun little field trip. Alea couldn't humor it, her gaze sharpening in frustration . "What do we do all day?" She frowned , "Gods... I guess they really do cultivate you not to have brains in your heads." She growled in annoyance, rolling her eyes. "Who we decide who to fight with next? You think this is a fight ring? I'm no fight dog, puppy." She teased, almost insulting the girl.

"No you're making it sound like you're an idiot. Continue on. Prattle on, little one." She frowned, "Isn't your visit at the zoo about over?" She glared, her gaze almost venomous. She had clearly struck a nerve with the red head, her anger quite evident as she glared with that dagger sharp gaze, ready to pounce at any second should she need to.

Crownless stared at Alea, her blue eyes seeming to sparkle with excitement. "You-" She began, tripping over her words before continuing, "You fight them?" She asked, almost in awe. From the stories she'd been told if a human so much as looked at a Vampire the wrong way they'd be mutilated, killed- It was an insane thought to think that Medietas would fight. When she first became an Optimum, given her name by Horrid, it called out how brash she acted. How she would fight him, fight other Vampires in his group, even giving one of them a bloody nose. So this girl, this firey red-head in a way reminded her of how she was before everything. Even the way she spoke, she longed to go back to being unafraid, so unabashedly her instead of this prissy pet who was scared of the slightest noise. The blonde simply shook her head, "Optimum's usually have to stay by their masters when visiting another estate. It's for safety, at least that's what I was told." She paused, thinking for a moment. Did Medietas not know what Optimum's went through, or did they think it was just fine clothes and the occasional humiliation? Regardless Crownless continued, "When Optimum's get into a fight, it's usually not very long. I've seen a fair share dragged away. Sometimes an Optimum getting too mouthy with another. I've even seen two Optimum's with the same master fighting for his attention." Thinking back on those moments she shuttered, "Pretty Gross honestly." She let out a dry laugh, her eyes dulling as she continued to think back to everything. God it felt hopeless. God she felt so...weak. But that's how they wanted her to feel. Some toy to be used, something that only held value if someone wanted her, and even then that same person who 'saved' her could throw her away if they grew tired.
Avatar
Alea's voice startled her. The sudden irritation was surprising. Had she phrased it that poorly? Her eyebrows furrowed, "Empathy isn't sympathy or pity, it's like a mutual understanding, at least that's what I thought it meant." She mumbled that last part trying to rack her brain for how to remedy the situation. Her eyes went from soft, clearly worried to anger in an instant, "Nobody chooses to be a pet." She cut through Alea's words, her voice sharp. The loudest she's been in a while and it was just her speaking normally. Crownless let out a sigh, glancing at the ground then back to Alea, "I'm sure you are. I hadn't meant-" Silence quickly fell over the room. If someone heard that, if *anyone heard it they would be killed. After everything she's had to do, if this is what kills her it would be a slap in the face. Unlike Alea, Crownless learned long ago that there's worse things then death.* "Shut up." She quietly hissed, glancing back at the door. Her heart pounding so loud it felt like it was ringing in her ears. Her voice softened, as she bit the inner corner of her lip, "I don't mean that... I just-" She sighed, leaning back in the chair as she pinched the bridge if her nose. "I get that Optimum's are spoiled usually, but I meant besides what they force you to do. Like what's your home like? Friends? Family? I wanted to know things about you as a person. I do not want to be some Optimum asking a Medietas questions foe amusement or some sick fun. I want to talk to you because you're the first person in a while that isn't all-" "My master is amazing, you really should be more grateful." She said mockingly, giving her voice an up-pitch. Crownless narrowed her eyes. Puppy? What the hell? "I'm not some obedient dog. And I certainly don't think of your fights are planned out like boxing. I just wanted to know how you went about it. Like do you watch out for guards? The thought process, not just how you attack them.-
11:17
-That's tasteless." With Alea's remark she frowned. It hurt to think that this girl thought Crownless was looking at her like some exhibit. As if she was a clown in a circus when it was nothing like that. "I don't think you're a zoo animal! What do you think all Optimum's are the same?!" Her voice was soft but her words had bite behind them.
