The redheaded cavalry, it seemed, was not coming to rescue him. "Thank you for doing this sir, you really didn't have to, but I appreciate it." It was clear that Lana's dad had something to say to him, but whatever it was, he kept Matt guessing, Releasing his hand, he said suggestively, "Have fun tonight, and remember it's not all about you." Matt was confused, but he smiled, nodding, "Thank you for the advice." The colonel was still very sharp, playful even, and although Matt had never really felt intimidated by him, he'd never really gotten a read on him either.
He felt a bit odd leaving the encounter, and made his way around the room, accepting handshakes and hugs, smiling as graciously as he knew he was supposed to and slipping into the mode of easy detached charm that had come so naturally to him in his youth. It was a mask that almost didn't fit these days, but no one else, apart from Lana had really noticed yet.
There are too many people here. He wasn't hungry, but he wanted to sit down, and concentrate on eating, or something simple, he wanted to be close to Lana, hold her hand again, continue the task of making amends. Seeing everyone around only one word came to his mind. Family. and Lana was the only one he had, and the only one he wanted.
Matt spotted his mother as she made her way over to him, and he embraced her as soon as he could. Her greeting was muffled by his chest. She held onto him as if she might never let go. This was ritual every time he came home, but somehow this time he didn't mind so much. "I love you too Mom." he responded, "But seriously, what's going on? you said just family."
