The cool night breeze blew in through the open windows, the curtains blowing gently in the mostly empty room. Charlotte was sitting at the back of the room, her face showered in the blue light of her computer. She had been working late that night, as she often did. She was exhausted. Her plain black suit was crumbled and wrinkled from the long day.
Charlotte sighed deeply before leaning back in her seat. She closed her eyes for moment before looking at the time in the corner of the screen. 2:29am. She sighed once more as she stood, digging in her pocket to grab a small metal lighter and a pack of cigarettes. She quickly pulled one from the pack before the crimson flame burned the tip. Before she could inhale, her phone violently buzzed in her other pocket. Charlotte groaned as she fetched her phone, the bright screen burning her eyes. She squinted as she tapped the large green button to answer the call, bringing it to her ear.
Her fiancé's soft voice filled her ears, causing Charlotte to raise an eye brow. They had been distant lately so it was odd to get a call from the woman. As the other spoke, Charlotte found herself sighing and shaking her head. "I'll be there shortly." Was all she said before abruptly hanging up, pocketing the device. Charlotte then put out her cigarette on the balcony's ash tray before leaving the office.
