Tired, hungry and angry were three emotions that I currently felt as I crouched behind a dilapidated Humvee. I need time to think, to catch my breath and just mourn those that I have lost. The group I had been traveling with for the past year... every single one of them were dead. Murdered in their sleep or woken to the grotesque sounds of their comrades dying only to meet their own demise. I had been spared only by pure luck. After having been woken by my trusty four legged companion German Shepherd; Bandit had needed to use the restroom and being the dutiful human I am I took him out and returned to our compound only to find everything either coated in blood or caught on fire. I had traveled too far away to have heard the screams, was it luck or had Bandit led me away to keep me safe? I couldn't say for certain but one thing I was sure of, it wasn't the cannibals that had done the compound in. Normally the cannibals just came for the meat, targeting only survivors and leaving supplies and foundations alone. No, this had to have been the work of another survivor group. I was frustrated, everything had been ransacked, there was barely anything left when I snuck back into the room that had been mine and Bandit's in the old abandoned school. Only having enough time to pull out my backpack from it's hiding place. Either the looters weren't in a hurry or they weren't smart and just didn't think to check in the ceiling of the old school. The tile dropped to the floor and Bandit let out a low growl alerting me to someone coming. Swearing under my breath I swung my backpack over my shoulder and looked around the barren room. . (edited)

Where to hide? Seeing no other option I nudged Bandit's rear before jumping out the broken window of the classroom, my trusty dog following behind with one monumental leap. With my back against the brick wall I tried my best to steady my breathing. I had my supplies but no current weapon save for the bat sticking out of the worn out backpack and I wasn't sure how many of the raiders were left, or what sort of weapons they were using. Shit, fuck, shit. Mentally swearing I listened as I heard the sound of shuffling feet against the tile floor. Please just leave. I shut my eyes as I debated if I should make a beeline for the line of pine trees or just wait it out where I currently was. Glancing up I saw the beam of a flashlight and I stilled, my heart hammering wildly in my chest. (edited)

I am only focusing on two things at the moment, my breathing, and surroundings. The feel of the old metal somewhat comforting in my gloved hands as is the snug fit of the gasmask straps against my skull. The lenses, portals into the dreary interior of this wretched scene. The occasional wrecked housing or body only tightening my grip on the shotgun in my hands. Every breath able to be heard as the mask filters the air around me I slowly step through the abandoned settlement, having seen the fires burning in the previous night. My breathing steady yet heavy as the mounted flashlight shows the floating ash of the hallway, the beam flickering occasionally with the old bulb. My head and muzzle snap to the direction of a clattering noise in the depths of the school building, I begin to walk in that direction. Every room I pass by being either closed off or destroyed before I see one of the final doorways. Heading inside I can see a tile having been destroyed when it fell, my eyes sweep the room, seeing nothing at the moment but my guard remains Eventually I call out in some heavily accented english "Raiders... I know you're here, come out and I'll make your deaths quick, unlike what you did to these poor people." My eyes lock onto the nearby broken window, steps getting closer and closer "If you don't then I'll make sure what you did is nothing in comparison"

Eyes wide, I weigh my options as I hear the voice call out. Tree line, or to announce my already compromised position. I bite down on my cheek as I hear the footsteps growing ever closer and I quickly shoot my hands up above the window frame. "D-don't shoot!" On week knees I push myself up, the windowsill stopping just below my chin and only revealing my head. "I'm not-" I take a step back as I see the shotgun. Bandit whimpers at my side but I lower a hand to quiet him lest the gun get aimed at him. "I'm not a raider. This was-" My voice cracks as the lump in my throat aches at the faces that flash before my eyes. "-was my home." Be it temporary or not I had grown close to the people here, having made memories that I'd cherish. Now what was I to do, with some unknown stranger with a gun pointed in my direction. Would he believe me or was I just as damned as those I had just lost? Only time would tell and once again I was in a position in which I was too tired to care if I were to live or die. Bandit growled at the figure behind the light, his body taking up a defensive position in front of me, his hackles rose and his teeth bared to show that he didn't take kindly to his human being threatened. The fear for my companion outweighed the threat of my own person as I hissed and lowered my arms. "Bandit, at ease." He didn't really seem to listen, his teeth still showing to the man in the window. Stressed I glance up at the window. @LoneWaffle

My scrap armored gas mask leaves no bit of humanity to be seen, the glint of sunrise reflecting off of its lenses. The shotgun looking to be a well kept relic, a model 1897 with a long, sword bayonet fixed to the end, and a small flashlight duct-taped to it. My body is covered in an old greatcoat, boots, fatigues and gloves, not a single bit of skin uncovered. A scav, plain and simple "So you're from this settlement then?" I keep my weapon trained on this new girl, the fear evident in your voice making me thing you're actually telling the truth... Oh curse my bleeding heart. I lower my gun, keeping it ready, but not aiming it at you anymore "Come back in here, girl. I won't like being exposed out there" I step back inside, clearing the rest of the room before sitting down on a desk and waiting. Taking off my pack, I pull out a two cans of stew and a cooking stand. I stab the two cans in the top with the bayonet before setting them on the stand over a nearby small fire, still burning. @EnchantedNymph

As the gun is lowered and the light is no longer shining in my eyes I can tell that the newcomer is a scavenger and relief floods my system, even Bandit seemed to relax as the gun no longer pointed at me. Sure scavs could be just as dangerous as raiders depending on the situation but this was promising. "Bandit, come." I move the old box over to the window and hoist myself up, careful to avoid the scattered bits of glass and swing myself back into the room. Bandit himself ran and jumped from the box into the room with more ease and grace than I had. He placed himself between you and I and I can't blame him, even if there wasn't a gun pointed at us you were still unknown. At the sight of the cooking stand and the smell of the stew as it slowly began to heat my stomach rumbled in protest. When had I last had a decent meal? Here at the compound everyone had been responsible for their own food and I survived merely on rations of dry meat I had bartered for as well as some wild grown onions I had found on one of my excursions. I swallowed and took my bag off my shoulders and placed it in an empty chair a bit away. I pull out a large waterskin and plop down in my chair. "So ah, thanks...for not shooting me." @LoneWaffle

As you step inside, I stare at you, obviously still not fully trusting of you. The flickering light of the fire reflecting again in my eyepieces. The only sound I make besides heavy muffled breathing is a light "Mhmmm" I look back down to the cooking stew, silently. The crackle of the fire and warming stew... Man I'm bad with social interaction... maybe that's why I'm a scav? She's probably still scared shitless after the death of all her friends.. I take the stew off from the stand, peeling off the top and pulling a spork from my pack, sticking it into the can before handing it to you. "Eat, you're obviously hungry" After handing you the stew, I get to opening the second can, holding it out for bandit. "Here Bandit...." As I hold out the food, I look back up to you "What is your name?"

I wasn't the type to look a gift horse in the mouth and eagerly accepted the can of stew. I was actually surprised even more so by the offer of the other can for Bandit, most people either steer clear of him or treated him like dirt instead of a valued being. "Ah, thanks..." I watch as Bandit doesn't even wait, his nose going deep into the can hungrily. Animal companions were not that common in the world today, most animals were just feral beasts that were hunted for food... However, to me Bandit was like a brother. "Ah, most folks call me Mercy." If you could call it a name. If I had ever actually had a legitimate name I don't remember but it wasn't like we were close enough to share that kind of baggage after having just met. "Yours?" I ask as I lift a heaping spoonful to my mouth. It was so good, the warmth and flavor of the meat and potatoes had my eyes tearing up. I try my best to enjoy the taste but my hunger wins out and before I realize it the can is empty. With a sigh I set the can down and watch as Bandit still works on his own can, the sound of the fire the only companion to the sound of the can clinking against the floor as he licked it spotless. Feeling like I need to compensate for the food I dig around in my bag for a few moments before I pull out about four small bottles of whiskey and hold them out to you. "For the food." I hold out two of the four and wait for you to take them. @LoneWaffle

I smile underneath my mask, the dog eating eagerly, almost with as much gusto as the girl herself... Mercy, a strange name but not the strangest I've heard. I look back to you as you offer me the whiskey, I take two of the bottles pushing the other two back to you, storing the bottles away for later looking forward to testing them out... hmm I'll just need to find some gasoline and Ive got all I need. Am I a pyromaniac?... probably, oh well "My name? You can call me Volk" The muffled voice from underneath my mask is deep and very russian. I finally sling my shotgun, putting it away fully for the moment before going back to staring at you. "Do you... have anywhere to go?" This place seemed pretty permanent settlement, most people don't have any backups planned because there are so few options... maybe I should bring her back to my camp. She's a decent person, and it's not like I can't sustain another person for a while "What do you plan on doing now? Any other places you can go?"
Avatar
"Volk." I test saying it a moment and nod my head once. There was just something about putting a name to a person, be it there name or not that just made things more relaxed and I instantly feel more at ease. Hearing your question I can't help but blink a few times as I think about it. Truth was I hadn't stopped to even consider what I was going to do yet. After a few moments of silence I let out a humorless laugh. "No, not really." I place the bottles I had remaining in my hand back into my bag. Bandit had finished with his can and moved to curl up at my feet, his head resting against my boot as he let out an audible huff. "We can rough it out until we find somewhere more permanent... Bandit and I are familiar with it and have done it before." I rest my elbows on the desk and hold my hands together. "I have a map of several settlements I can check out." Though I don't think I will, the thought of being in those larger places were that you risked raiders and other unpleasant kind of incidents and I just want a break. Shrugging my shoulders I glance at you and the mask. "You sound different than most folks..." @LoneWaffle

I chuckle, that being muffled huffs of breath beneath my mask "Da, I would sound different." I think back to the family, I'm due to report back within the next year... It will be nice to be among them again... I begin to pack up my things again, deep in thought. My hands being kept busy as I start fiddling with my shotgun, idly wiping it down and cleaning it up. "Well, where I come from, we all sound like this" I look back to you, my head tilted to the side, similar to how a dog would. As if I were contemplating something about you "...hmm, do you want to come with me?" I take the bayonet off, sharpening it on a small whetstone hooked onto my bag, it seems my hands don't like to stay idle "I have a camp set up nearby, it wouldn't be a problem to have you stay for a bit while I travel, plus I could use a partner to scavenge with" I plug the bayonet back in, undoing the flashlight and fishing in my bag for fresh batteries

I think about asking where you come from, but with the state of the world now I'm not quite sure if asking that would even matter. "Go with you?" I arch a brow at the offer being extended. I knew I should probably say no, to go it alone with just Bandit so that I wouldn't grow attached again... how many times now had it been that I had lost people I'd grown attached?" I stare down at my hands, the calloused dirt covered fingers showed just how hard I'd worked to stay alive. "Mm, and where exactly..." I look back up to see you go about sharpening your weapon and curious I watch on. "Ah." I scratch my chin and take a deep breath before leaning back and resting the back of my head in my hands. "I guess...yeah, sure. We'd like to. Right, Bandit?" I ask the dozing pooch at my feet who lifts his head and stares at me before giving a soft bark in response. "There you have it. You just got yourself two companions." Let's hope none of us come to regret it... @LoneWaffle

I nod silently, looking down at my arm as I flip up the lid to a compass strapped there "Hmm... It should be a day to the northwest" shuffling through a pocket on the inside of my coat, I bring out a map, opening and perusing it "Once we get there, we can get your gear sorted"I stand up, dusting myself off with all the ash in the air having settled finally... Her and bandit should be useful for future scavving. Leaning down, I pat bandit lightly on the head before turning to pick up my shotgun, checking the chamber... hmm She'll probably need some body armor... a new weapon.. I might be able to get her a working mask if we need to... My head turns to you "I look forward to our partnership" Well... at least I didn't run into a raider, it's nice to actually meet regular people every once in a while... especially ones that won't try to kill me, or eat me

Bandit didn't so much as even twitch as you reach down to pat his head, though as soon as I move to stand he is up and alert, his tail lightly wagging from side to side as he waited to see what I was going to do. I zip my bag and sling it back over my shoulder. "Ditto." I sling my bag over my shoulder and look around. "I just need to do one thing before we leave...alright?" I tap Bandit lightly on the head as I head for the door. "I'll be back in a minute." There had been something that had become a sort of ritual for me each time something tragic like this happened. Generally it was over one loss, but the fact that everyone in the compound had died... Twenty-three people no longer gracing this fucked up world with their presence all thanks to peoples greed ... I pull the bandana off of the loop on my pants and fold it around my nose and mouth to prevent any particles from being inhaled and make my way through the dark hallways. I don't really need much light, having traveled these halls so many times throughout these last few years and eventually I come to the cafeteria where everyone had used to gather. I pause in the entry way and my hands ball into fists, my nails digging into my palms as I see bodies strewn about. I go towards the podium that had been brought in for when the group used to have meetings and sat my bag down on the ground before pulling out a small wax candle. I light it and set it in the center of the podium before I kneel in front of it. I'm not really religious in any shape or form, but if there was some sort of afterlife I pray that those that have gone find peace and after a few minutes of silence I rise and make my way back to the room. "Alright, if you lead the way we'll follow." @LoneWaffle

I nod as you walk out, packing up the rest of my supplies silently thinking about all the tasks I'll have to do to make the camp better suited for two people and a dog...Well first would be either getting a larger tent, or another one of the same size, I'll need to get my extra sleeping roll out too... As I pack, I look out the window to see the sun set on the day, finally bringing me into my territory, the night, every scav's home. When you get back to the room I'm all packed up and ready to go, my shotgun out, flashlight off. "Understood, let's go" I walk out of the room with you and bandit behind me, making my way out of the schoolbuilding, and the settlement as a whole before heading into the surrounding forest. The only light we have is the light of the moon passing from between the branches of each of the trees, occasionally glinting off my gear. "So..." hmmm, I can't think of anything to actually talk about... yup, I'm definitely socially inept after years of scavving alone

I focus on the crunching sounds as my boots tread through the burnt items scattered along the ground. I keep my eyes trained in a straight line, the smell of burnt flesh and wood permeated the air and I felt sick, though thankfully it eventually subsided and I relaxed, finally feeling it safe to raise my head. The smell of the trees and earth was definitely an approvement. Once we are deep enough in the forest Bandit takes off at a running pace though he stays just within eyesight, his tail wagging as he sniffs around. I glance from where he had run to you and wait for you to finish whatever it was you had been about to say. After a few moments though, I realize you probably aren't and take a deep breath. "So..." I repeat, my hands gripping tight onto the straps of my backpack. "It just you at that camp of yours?" @LoneWaffle

I don't look back at the question, keeping my focus on the faint game trail ahead of us as we walk "Da, I've been alone for... 6 years now?..." damn, has it really been that long since I was sent out? I'll have to check in soon I slow down a bit, letting you catch up to me as I watch not only the way forward but bandit obviously enjoying himself tremendously "And what about you? Has it just been you and bandit for very long? besides the settlement i mean" I know it's a rather blunt question, but I need to gauge your abilities, not wanting to shove you in a situation you're not ready for. She's rather young still, didn't react too harshly to the loss of her settlement so she probably didn't have anyone she was incredibly attached to, poor girl "Apologies if it's insensitive, but I'm not really used to... people after all this time" @EnchantedNymph
Avatar
"Only been at the settlement for a little over a year but-" I try my best to keep up, my shorter legs and exhaustion slowing me down. "Yeah, Bandit and I have been on our own besides a few...stops here and there. Being alone seems to be what we were good at." Though in truth I hated it, being alive during times like these were hard enough, but being a kid that had been abandoned added a whole other level to the travesty that was life in the after. Of course, I'd heard stories from those that were alive in the before, or who had known someone who'd been alive when society had been whole. "You didn't offend me, no need to apologize." I can tell you've slowed down for me and for that I'm thankful. Bandit had run even further ahead until he realized I wasn't close and he came bounding back towards us and once he's at my side he stays there. I get the feeling there's to the question than you spoke so I add on. "I'm not particularly skilled at combat, but I'm like a cockroach, hard to squash." @LoneWaffle

I finally look back at you, a small chuckle reverbing through my mask like heavier huffy of breath...it won't do to have her die needlessly... where else will I find some actual human company rather than chatting with my tools... and Brenda... "Well we'll just have to get you sorted out in that department. You'll be a fighter in no time" I think back to when I was younger, my own training being the grueling hell that it was. Having left the compound years ago I've only over the more recent years become adept at the craft if killing. I finally end up beside you as we walk, my lenses still studying you curiously.

I'm sure I should say something in this moment but nothing really came to mind that didn't make me feel worse than I already did. I couldn't easily speak of the ones I'd lost in the compound... Memories flashed before my eyes; George who was the grumpy old man that everyone loved to tease but really deep down he had been a softy. Or his son, Parker who had taught me how to appropriately swing a baseball bat enough to hurt. Images of past trips out of the compound with a group of six or so to scavenge for supplies... and my best friend Darcy who had been the sweetest kid I'd met in all my years of living. All of them were now gone and I was once again feeling the heavy losses in my heart. Just how many times does one have to suffer? Is happiness just something out of reach? I don't like where my thoughts are going, already I can feel the tears threatening to fall in the corner of my eyes but I won't let it. "So uh...." A try and think of a topic to distract myself. I try my best to ignore the waver in my voice as I say the first thing that comes to my mind. "What brings someone like you to what used to be the states?" I'd heard stories of the before, of the different continents but no one knew exactly what the status of them were, especially with technology being scarce and extremely hard to come by. I screw my eyebrows as a look at you, with you underneath the mask I'm not sure of your age or anything really. @LoneWaffle

She's trying hard to keep it together, thankfully we'll be getting to the camp soon I continue to walk through the light brush, I bump your shoulder with my own, silent but trying to be at least somewhat comforting. "I was actually born here, but we retain our language and traditions from the old country, whether it still exists or not. Дети России будут жить дальше" I say the rather practiced phrase, one that has been repeated for generations in the family "We're getting close, not much farther" I hold up my hand for both of us to stop, thinking about the safe path into the camp motioning for you to follow me "Make sure to keep bandit close, I don't want him to get hurt, there are a few defenses I have here" Carefully I make my way through the final stretch of heavy woods, taking care of where I step and making sure you follow me exactly @EnchantedNymph

I hadn't been expecting any sort of comfort, so when my shoulder got bumped with your own I look up in surprise. My throat tightened for a moment, a knot forming. I wouldn't cry, I've lost people before...in this world one has to be used to it nothing came from mourning but distraction. "Oh...what's that mean?" My eyebrows scrunch up. "Sounds cool though." "Oh, really?" I glance at you before looking back ahead, the grip on my straps tightening. I let out a low short whistle, one indicating to Bandit to stay at my heel and the dog does and I relax just a bit. "What kind of traps, if you don't mind me asking?" It's not the first time a base has had boobytraps and it wouldn't be the last. I'd always been fascinated with them but never really good at making them myself. I take it slow as I step carefully along the safe path, making sure to watch where I place my feet "The saying... it means 'the sons of Russia will live on' it was a country of the old world. We carry on many Russian traditions and even the language" I look back at you and bandit, making sure you're walking safely before turning back... Alright, almost through, should be seeing the site soon... "and as for the traps, I was lucky enough to find some shaped charges from an old mining site, they're set to blow facing away from my camp... so watch your step" @EnchantedNymph

You wouldn't have to tell me twice, just the mention of them had already set me on edge. My attention on the ground beneath my feet and around me. Bandit stuck close to my side and I'm thankful he is such a good listener, if I'd lost him- I couldn't even think about that right now... the other losses still fresh in my mind. "That's cool... to have something to belong to, I mean." I say, my thoughts wondering what kind of country Russia had been during the before and what it was like now after. "I don't really belong anywhere or know anything like that... just know the language I've picked up as I grew. I barely can even read honestly." I was rambling, perhaps because I was on edge, the idea of the traps made me anxious. "Though nondamaged books are hard to come by." A sigh escaped me and I place a hand on Bandit for a moment, my hand scratching behind his ear. "There was this old man, George..." My voice broke for a moment. "He'd been trying to teach me. Said it was a skill that could be useful." I shake my head. Guess that's the end of that... My throat tightened and I felt like I'd cry again. "Anyway- how much further?" @LoneWaffle

My own throat constricts in a bit or rage, those raiders have much to answer for. "Well.. I've a few books to use, I'd be happy to tutor you in reading it's a good skill, especially when scavenging" scavenging or not, I can't imagine what I would do without my books to entertain me... *I would probably become a full time arsonist psychopath instead of part time "We're through the blast zone now" I spot the marked tree saying it's safe, before we come into a clearing, a brick pre-fall cottage in tye center of it, a small garage padlocks to the side as well as a small greenhouse, my own little sanctuary "welcome to my home" @EnchantedNymph

I visibly relax at hearing we made it through and when I finally look up the site before me actually has me surprised. To see a building in as good a condition as this one was rare, and the fact that it was what you called home had me filling with excitement. "Wait, this is your camp?" I point at the cottage, it was almost picturesque. "This is..." For once I'm lost for words and I shuffle on my feet as Bandit barks and runs forward clearly about to go and mark his territory like most animals tended to do. "Wow." I step forward as I take it all in. "You even have a greenhouse?!" I'd only ever seen one other one and it's condition had been less than this. "Do you...grow your own food? How even-" @LoneWaffle

I let out a small smile under my mask, the sight of home after all the shit from the raid helps bring me into a better place mentally hmm, I guess using the guest room as an extra workshop won't do for now "Da, this is home. I've lived here for the past 9 years, it's taken that long to make the garage and finish the greenhouse, but the house itself has been here for much longer" Pointing at the greenhouse "I've just started growing my own vegetables and fruits too, I was able to find a small abandoned gardening shop in a city a few days away, time for the first harvest draws near" I start on my way towards the main house, shrugging off my hood to reveal dark steel hair and the pale skin of my neck @EnchantedNymph

I stare in amazement at the greenhouse, my interest highly peaked by the prospect of learning how to grow food. I'd never been good at that kind of thing, never in one place long enough to even try the idea out. My talents and skills were in other things though how helpful those things were had been put up for debate before. "That's so cool." Seeing you start to head towards the house I follow behind, letting out a whistle for Bandit to come back to my side. "I can help with that if you want? I mean...with the risk of cannibals and raiders... an extra set of hands and eyes could only heighten the chances of success, right?" I chuckle but stop when I see your hair. I'd been wondering what you looked like underneath all of that. "I mean... I should hold my weight and all." @LoneWaffle

Pale unblemished skin makes itself known before I turn to you, the Grey blue of my eyes gazing at you while my thin lips curl upwards into a small smile "I would be glad for the help mercy, Spaciba" Turning back to the house, I pull out a key unlocking the door "But before all that, I should show you your room, and get all this gear off" I hope she likes the accommodations the mattress on the floor should be alright... right? My interest is peaked as I watch you remove the mask you'd been wearing ever since you had pointed the shotgun at me and truth be told I'm taken by surprise. Out of all the things I could have seen underneath that mask, your looks were a very delightful shock. My cheeks flushed slightly and I looked away for a brief moment using Bandit as the reason, my hand moving to scratch the top of his head. "N-no need to mention it, least I can do anyway..." "I get...my own room?" My eyebrows shot up in surprise. Before in the compound and even the other two settlements I had lived in I'd had to share a room with at least two or three other people, sometimes more depending on the influx of incoming survivor groups. The door opened and Bandit zoomed forward. "Bandit! Wait!" I glance at you for a moment. "I-is it okay if he goes inside? I know some people don't really like dogs inside, them being close to wild or not..." I bite my lip. "Ah, I mean, he's trained, I promise." I look to you with a chuckle, this not being covered by the mask is rather deep and rich rather than muffled huffing "Da, you'll have your own room. A beautiful young lady should have her privacy after all. Of course, if you need me and I'm in my own room please knock" inside the small 2 story home is a small den with a patched up leather loveseat and a comfy either chair in front of a fireplace. The kitchen sits open to the side with a gas stove, a sink a pantry and fridge, not humming with life however. Then there is a staircase going both up and down from the main floor as well as what you might assume to be a bathroom behind a closed door. I unbutton and shrug off my great coat, showing some somewhat worn fatigues and boots after hanging the coat up along with my mask. I also open a small closet, depositing my shotgun inside alongside some other older firearms of different makes and models. "This is my home, please keep it clean, if you would" I then see bandit bound past me and start lounging in front of the big comfy chair and I don't even register your words before a warn smile crosses my features at the adorable sight heh, it's been too long since I've seen a non-rabid dog... it's nice. Not to mention... shes rather cute when she blushes like that... all timid and nervous... I finally look back to you. "He's no bother at all mercy, I can't think of a better sight than a lively and lived in home, and bandit is helping with that" I smile gently placing a hand on your shoulder "this place is home now, for as long as you need it. I don't see many decent people nowadays... you're worth helping out" @EnchantedNymph

"Won't even realize I'm here." I say holding up both hands, eyes wide. "I don't have much to make a mess with anyway so..." I wasn't expecting the pat on the shoulder and our heigh difference is obvious as I look up at you. Why do I feel so small now of all times? I swallow the knot in my throat, the compliment you've given me makes my cheeks flush even more so. "Ah...thanks Volk, you're more than decent yourself" I break eye contact for a moment and hold up the bat between us. "Where should I uh, store my things?" Can you be more obvious? Inwardly I groan at myself. It had been different when we had been outdoors, less of an intimate setting than an actual home and I can't help but shake the feeling that I'm out of place. Hopefully with time it will pass but for now I'm just exhausted and flustered for some unknown reason. "Thanks again...for letting us stay." @LoneWaffle

I being a scav for 9 years, have very little social skills and have no clue about people besides the little exposure I did as a child, I do notice the blush however She's rather cute when she blushes The stray thought floats through my head, but I try to ignore it before motioning to the stairs heading up. Your own compliment making it through the haze of my mind. "Well, I'll take you to your room." I turn around hiding the smallest of blushes coming to my cheeks, being rather obvious against my pale complexion. "You're welcome by the way, for letting you stay here, but not for the compliment, its true after all" Heading up the wooden steps, my boots making very light thuds as I make my way to the second floor. Once there, we both can see a small hallway, doors on either side and one on the end. Opening the door on the right, reveals a cozy bedroom with a weathered but clean mattress on top of a homemade bedframe, the floor of the room has multiple large rugs of different varieties sprawled across it. A desk lays in the corner of the room, simple but sturdy. "It's small, but I hope you can get comfortable in here. I can bring some blankets and pillows out, for you and bandit as well" @EnchantedNymph

I barely catch the flush of the cheeks and for a minute I think my eyes are playing a trick on me but I decide to let it sit. I beam a smile and follow behind, Bandit perking up as we head up the stairs but there is no indication that he will get up anytime soon. My footfalls are more quiet, and my steps keep in tune with your own as we stop in front of the door. I peek in as you open it, it's more than I'd ever had to call my own and I suck in a breath. "Oh. A bed!" I rush forward, careful not to bump into you as I plop my things near the foot of the bed before plopping my own butt on the mattress. The springs lightly protest underneath me but to me it's all amazing. Eyes sparkling I turn towards the doorframe. "I've never had an actual bed before..." I clear my throat and grin. "This is by no means small, thank you. It's very...homey." The offer of blankets and a pillow make me nod. "I'd appreciate it, I don't have a lot of meat on these bones so I get cold easily...though normally I cuddle Bandit. But it seems he didn't want to move from his spot down there." I bite my lip for a second. "Um, Volk?" I mull over the question in my mind for a minute before I ultimately cave and ask. "Do you uh, have anywhere I can freshin up?" My face flushes. "At the compound we collected rain water and took turns on different days because of how many of us there were...so ah." I scratch my cheek and look away sheepishly. "Yeah..." Way to put up a sign, 'hey i'm dirty' "If not...that's okay. I can figure something out tomorrow." @LoneWaffle

I can't help but chuckle a bit at the downright, adorable display of you bouncing a bit on the bed. She's... very cute. I'll be sure to get enough of those blankets... she's quite slight, I don't want her getting cold... "I'm glad you like it, I'll be sure to get you a bundle before the sunset." My eyebrows raise a bit in recognition from the question "Oh, I've got a bathroom downstairs, it has a bathtub that you can fill though I'll have to turn on one of the generators for it to be warm water" Hmmm... this is rather strange... It feels weird for her to call me Volk in my own home "Hmm... You can call me Mikhail, it feels strange to have you call me my codename" I sit in the chair by the desk, letting my hand tap idly against the wood. "If you want, I can head back downstairs and get some food ready for us both, I've still got some good meat chilling in the icebox... I hope you like Venison" I stand back up, heading to the door and back down the stairs

I caught myself almost saying thank you again so instead I bit my tongue and watch you sit down at the desk. My heart skipped a beat as I hear your name and I nod. "Alright, Mikhail it is." The blush on my cheeks is probably still there but there isn't much more I can do about it right at the moment. I didn't have to worry long as you offered to cook us some food. "I can eat pretty much anything...unless it's kale." I scrunch up my face and crinkle my nose to show my distaste as you head for the door. "Someone from the compound had traded another settlement for some and that stuff is..." My body shivers just remembering the green plant and how it tasted. "But meats? Can't go wrong with any animal meats. Um...while you cook do you mind if I shower?" I ask hopping off the bed and following you back down the stairs. @LoneWaffle

Closing the door behind me, I let out a small sigh "damn... I need to get ahold of myself... she's too cute" walking downstairs I head into the kitchen, washing my hands before starting on the food. "Do I even have decent clean clothes?" I groan dumping the contents of my bag out on the bed. Miscellaneous items fall out as well as a couple of sets of clothing. "Mm, not this one...nope..." A sigh escapes me shortly following a groan. "What am I even doing?" Rolling my eyes I grab another tank top, though this one dirtied or covered in bits of ash and blood. The shorts I grab are a little worse for wear but they're loose and comfortable, about one of the only pairs I slept in. Scratching my chin I sigh as I wrap my underwear in the shirt and head down the stairs. "Generator?" I ask as I pop my head into the kitchen. "I've operated one before...if it's similar I should be able to do it myself." Bandit finally moved from his resting spot and sniffed at the air as he came into the kitchen, right beside where you were cooking. He didn't beg, but he definitely seemed to think this was the spot to be and it made me chuckle slightly. After you point me in the right direction I head on my way and get everything going. The set up in the designated bathroom was one that I was not too familiar with. Actual showers and tubs were something that were few and far between and the ones I had come across were makeshift things that someone had made from scavenged junk. Those worked well enough but this... this tub was fancy compared to all the others. The fact that you even had generators to heat the water... I definitely needed to somehow pull my weight in the future. .
14:29
I probably spend way longer in the shower than I normally would, but I don't think I'd be blamed for it... true hot water was a commodity and it was the best I'd felt in a really long time. Stepping out of the shower I wrap a towel around me and try my best to untangle my hair before I dry off and get dressed. By the time I leave the bathroom I can already smell the delicious scents of dinner wafting through the house. Towel draped around my neck as I dry my hair I follow the mouthwatering smells. "Smells good." @LoneWaffle

after pointing you in the direction of the generator, I go back to cooking before I feel a small nudge on my thigh. Looking down I find the honestly adorable face of bandit staring directly at me as I cook. Smirking, I lean down to give him a scratch under the chin, taking a bit of the leftover meat and holding it in front of him. "it's alright bandit, this one's yours" as he takes the chunk of venison from my hand I smile "you're both just adorable, huh?" I think I'm going to enjoy my company... When I hear the water running I continue cooking, letting the meat sear evenly before sticking the pan into the oven, letting it cook the rest of the way as I get the rest of the food ready. I take out a can of mashed potatoes and peas beginning to heat that as well on the stove top before getting the plates out. At the sound of your voice I turn around ready to thank you for the compliment before I my eyes widen at your... sleeping attire... a blush comes to my cheeks before I steer my eyes to yours trying to remain the gentleman as I speak "T-thank you mercy, it should be finished soon if you'd put the silverware on the table" I point to the drawer before turning back to the food trying to hide my blush, ineffectively @EnchantedNymph

"Alrighty." AlreadyI was in a much better mood, for once in a long time my skin felt cleaner than it had been in a long while. Not only that but seeing the blush on your cheeks made me feel good for some reason. I head into the kitchen, a pep in my step as I do. I notice Bandit chomping away on a piece of meat, his tail thumping happily against the floor. I open the indicated drawer and pull out the silverware. I move over to the table and set down each piece haphazardly on the table, never one to really sit at a table to eat and more often times than not using my hands I'm not too familiar with what went where. "Cups for drink?" I ask, turning back towards the cabinets. I look around trying to see if I can reach them in the cabinet. Thankfully with the help of my tip of my toes I reach them just fine and bring them down. I fill both with water before moving to place them beside each plate. "There." I nod my head in satisfaction at having helped, even if a little. "Need help bringing the food in here too?" @LoneWaffle

As I finish up the food, opening the oven to pull out the skillet with our sizzling cuts of meat and setting it on the stove to cool for a bit. I point to the cupboard with the glasses before turning to look at the table and seeing the rather roughly set silverware... and no napkins or cloths either... she was never taught this stuff... not that I should be surprised but perhaps I'll give her a few lessons on tablemanners. I don't want to be rude though... Turning back to the food I plate our meals and head to the table with them grabbing two cloths on the way "nyet, everything else is done. You can sit down with me though If you don't mind I'd like to do something before we eat" Setting down the plates at each of our spots, you would see both a steak of seared and roasted venison alongside a steaming mound of mashed potatoes and peas. Sitting down in my chair I put the cloth in my lap and set the other near you before putting my hands together, murmuring something in Russian under my breath with closed eyes. After I open them again I look to you with a small smile "thank you. You can eat now if you'd like" I start to cut into my own steak slowly, keeping my usual relaxed pace of eating as I would have a book with me most of the time during my meals. @EnchantedNymph

My mouth is watering as we take our seats and I eye you curiously as you put a napkin in your lap. I mimic your actions and place my own in my lap and as you close your eyes to what I assume is to give thanks to the meal I wait patiently though I'm not much one to do that myself but I respect it. "Oh, yeah... Thanks for the food." I smile and pick up a fork and knife as I eye the steak. As I begin to cut it I pause for a moment and place the silverware down so that I can remove the towel from around my neck. I place it on the back of the chair before righting myself again. Once again I pick up the fork and knife and begin to dig in. Unlike how I had placed the silverware I am more neat as I eat. Smaller bites of each thing rotating so that I can enjoy the taste of all the food. After swallowing a bite of the venison I glance at you. "Ran out of kale?" I ask playfully, a smile on my lips. "Such a shame. But I have to give compliments to the chef. It truly is the best meal I've had in a very long time." @LoneWaffle

She has manners, I guess I shouldn't judge... I cut into the steak, taking a piece of the meat and enjoying it with relish. "I'll have to admit, I don't usually make something this nice for every dinner. A new person here makes a special occasion however." A chuckle reverbates from my chest as I chew. "Of course, I'll try to make food you enjoy, not like I'll go out of my way to starve you" I'll have to break out more than old russian dishes for her, maybe I can find a cookbook... "Anything in particular you enjoy eating?" I continue to eat, enjoying not only the meat but potatoes and the peas as I savor the food as a whole. I wonder... maybe she likes sweets.. I might be able to get some sugarcane ready... or maybe scavenge some, i don't think it goes bad... "Or anything... besides kale that you don't like. I personally despise pickles and other vinegar based foods" @EnchantedNymph

I cut a small piece of the meat and pop it into my mouth and chew it thoroughly before swallowing it. "It's pretty hard to starve me over the taste of food. As long as it isn't spoiled I'll eat it...unless it's kale." I say very seriously and glance at you. So this is a special occasion type of thing... I flush a little at the thought, my hand moving to pick up the glass of water and take a sip. "Hmm... favorite foods..." I mull the question in my mind a minute as I scoop up some of the potatoes and peas. After swallowing that bite I finally respond. "Pancakes." Pretty soon all the veggies are off my plate and I'm just left with the remaining half of my steak. It's the most I'd eaten all day and already I was beginning to feel stuffed. "It's the closest thing I've ever had to a cake before was pancakes a couple months back. We only all got one each but it was the best thing I'd tasted. It was like eating a cloud." One final bite of meet and I glance at you curiously. "What about you, what's your favorite food?" @LoneWaffle

I take my final bite of steak with bit of relish. My lips curling into a small smile with the enjoyment of a filling meal. Looking back to you I can't help but chuckle at the rather cute answer. I will definitely be looking for some sugar, I might actually find some maple trees in the forest here... "I'll keep that in mind, though there will have to be some scavenging to find ingredients" Finishing my plate, I take a sip of water. "Hmm favorite food... I can't say I've ever really thought about it..." thinking back to all the meals I eat, usually it tastes fine or good, but nothing jumps out to me until... "My mother's pirozkhis... warm and doughy..." a warm smile lights up my face. "Definitely those..." @EnchantedNymph

"Piro-" I arch an eyebrow and try again at pronouncing it, already thinking I'd butcher it. "What's a pirozkhis?" I glance down at my plate and there's still half my steak on my plate. "Mind if I give this to Bandit?" I frown slightly. "As much as it was delicious there is no more room left in my stomach for another bite, and I'd hate for it to go to waste." Not to mention I was feeling a little guilty that I got to enjoy a decent meal for once and he had gone so long without decent food for dogs. "I rise then and begin to gather the plates. "I can clean the dishes since you were nice enough to cook for me." @LoneWaffle

"Heh, perhaps we'll be working on some russian as well while you're here, they're pastries, dough wrapped around savory meats or sweet fruit filling." My eye flick to bandit at your question, a bit more warmth visible in them. "Of course, he deserves a good meal doesn't he?" she's very loving to him. I'm glad there are at least some who see the value in animal companionship As you get up and take the plates I lean back in my chair a moment before getting up as well, walking over to the counter with a small smirk. "I'll dry, unless of course you've already figured out where everything is meant to go?" My teasing apparent. @EnchantedNymph

"I wouldn't mind learning some if I'm honest, I love learning. A friend of mine who was young in the before times had said that there was an organized education set in place... He taught us what he could remember with the things he found and I was really grateful for him..." I was glad you didn't mind me feeding the leftovers to Bandit and I move over with the plate, giving him the half of steak that had remained on my plate. Bandit happily gobbled it down, licking his chops when he was done. "Oh, no...I'm not a mind reader though I suppose it would be pretty easy to figure it out where to put them..." A small smile plays on my lips as you take up residence beside me. While washing the dishes I can't help but steal glances your way. I really had been taken by surprise by what had been underneath the mask you'd been wearing. "Tomorrow...are you going to go and scavenge some more? Bandit and I can tag along, or if there's work to do around here..." I glance at you as I hand you one of the cups I'd just washed, or fingers brushing against each other for just a moment. "Any way I can be of help please let me know." Part of keeping myself busy meant I didn't have to dwell on the losses I'd just experienced yet again, the other was wanting to repay the kindness you'd extended. "I discovered a pet store that might still have supplies a few miles from my old settlement... I had planned to go and check it out in the next few days before everything..." My words drop off and I stare at the plate in my hand, the rag in my hand slowly making circular motions, a frown on my lips. Yeah, keeping busy was the best course of action. @LoneWaffle

I can't help but smile at our wonderfully playful banter, it having been years since I've been able to simply chat with someone. The fact of youre rather lovely personality only making this all the better. whenever our hands touch I can't help but blush just the tiniest bit, not having much contact with.. well.. anyone for so long. "I was planning on doing my last scav run tomorrow but I'm glad to have a destination now, I'd be happy for you to join me, the company would be a pleasure." As the conversation turns darker, I look over to you, hearing your rather abrupt cutoff. Damn... she's trying to work through her emotions... literally... ugh, I'm going to feel damn stupid if this doesn't work.. giving the inside of my cheek a bit, I lean over wrapping my arm around your shoulder in a hug. Hearing that I'd actually be able to kill two birds with one stone made me feel slightly better. I just hoped that we would also be able to get some things that hadn't gone bad yet for Bandit. Though I wasn't sure how much we'd find that would be useful for the two of us humans, though if I remembered correctly the pet store was supposedly next to a bunch of others. A shopping mall, but more than likely most of those had been looted to the bare bones. I had been lost in my mixed thoughts so when I the arm wrap around me I had been taken by surprise. I inhaled deeply out of shock and just held my breath as we stood there. The warmth of your skin against my shoulder seeped through and I felt a flush spreading across my own face. My heartbeat growing slightly off kilter the longer your arm is wrapped around me. "Ah-" I clear my throat and bite my lip nodding my head, my thoughts even more of a mixture of chaos. My own blush deepens as you stop washing, trying not to look at the rather... adorable expression on your face. Damn it Mik, she's just lost everyone she cares about, she doesn't need your puppy love as another problem... Yet even as I think this to myself, I unconciously rub your shoulder lightly with my thumb, idly comforting you as I battle with my own thoughts. My hands are strong and firm yet still gentle when it comes to touching you, fingers skilled with intricate detail work as Ive done for many years. Eventually, I give your shoulder a rather awkward 'Friendly pat' before releasing you from the hug, blush slowly lessening as I get back to my task. Drying dishes... totally didn't just do that to the cutest girl Ive seen in years... the only girl Ive seen in years... damn I really need to get out more. I try pushing my thoughts away from the obvious elephant in the room that I had just caused. @EnchantedNymph (sorry for the long wait)

As we part I clear my throat, not thinking much of the awkward pat on my shoulder. As the task at hand resumes the silence that has fallen between us isn't one that bothers me in the least. The sounds of the water and the dishes clanking as they are handed off to be dried almost becoming a rhythm. By the time we are done I'm once again calm for the moment. "Thanks for letting me help. I think Bandit and I might retire for the night now... it's been a really long day." I run a hand through my hair as I look up at you, the flush that had been in my cheeks pretty much gone now. "Bandit." I snap my finger and he gets up from where he had been laying, coming to stand at my side. "See you in the morning then..." We head towards the stairs and take them one at a time, the events of the day truly catching up with me. I pause on the top step and look down towards the rest of the house. Once Bandit and I are in our room... our own, the word made me feel lots of things as I shut the door behind me. I look around the darkened room, the light of the moon providing just enough light that I can see my surroundings and my throat restricts. Bandit wasted no time and hopped on the bed, claiming the foot of the bed for himself. "Good boy..." The words are met with a whine as I move and pet his head and I know he's picking up on my feelings right now, he's always been able to tell when my mood is dark. "Shhh." I scratch behind his ear before I slip into the bed, my feet meeting resistance as I stretched my legs but I don't press any further, I am used to sharing a sleeping space with Bandit. My legs instantly bend so as not to disturb my trusty pooch. "We'll be okay, things-" My words are cut off as I yawned and I rub my eyes, pulling the blanket up to my chin. "will get better...have to." Next morning Waking up I open my eyes and have a mini panic attack. The unfamiliar surroundings take me a moment to register, but once I do I calm down quickly. I sit up, glancing around before I notice Bandit pacing at the door. He whined letting me know he needed to go and I get out of bed quickly. "Let me get dressed bud..." I yawn and stretch before going through my bag and grabbing an outfit. We're supposed to go scavenging today so I grab dark colors. My shirt and cargo pants both a muted black but finding decent clothes in an apocalypse beggars can't be choosers . The shirt clings to my curves while my pants do the opposite, plenty of room to maneuver in. "Alright, let's go." I slip on my shoes and we both head out of the room and down the stairs. @LoneWaffle

After that, I get dressed into some boots, cargo pants, and a long sleeve shirt. "Hahhh... a good morning." Walking out of my room, I give out a yawn as I pass by your room, stepping downstairs. I stretch and yawn, rubbing at my eyes as I come down the stairs. Bandit goes straight for the door, a whine escaping him though his tail wags excitedly. He prances in his spot as I come down and I give a short wave. "Good morning, I slept better than I have in a long time, thank you." I feel like I'll probably say thank you so much you'd grow tired of it but it's a habit I've stuck to and I'm unsure how to break it. Being thankful had been ingrained in me at an early age after my parents had died. "Hope you slept well too?" I reach for the door knob and open the door and I barely manage to call out "Stay close" before Bandit bounds out the door. He must have really had to go and I sigh, watching as he frantically sniffs for the perfect place to use the bathroom. After he's done he come running back in, zooming past me and heading right to you and I shake my head. Already Bandit has accepted you into the fold and I can't blame him after being given the kind of food he had last night. I shut the door and follow him with about a quarter as much energy and rub my neck. "What's for breakfast?" @LoneWaffle

They were looted from an old farmhouse a few months back" She looks cute today... I suppose she looked cute yesterday as well I shew away the stray thought before taking another bite of my bagel. I chew on my bagel slowly, watching you let out bandit. I should probably get to business "So, before we head out today, I wanted to get an idea on your combat or scavenging experience. Anything you don't know I'd be glad to give you some help on, but learning on the job is best." I think through the list of weaponry and gear in the house... and the shed for that matter. Ruffling a hand through my hair I take a seat at the table and look at the spread trying to figure out what exactly I wanted. Instantly moving to look at the different flavors of jams as I spread some cream cheese on a bagel. "Ah... I'm used to my bat. I was getting lessons before on how to use a gun but I don't really have a comfortable feeling when using them and hardly know anything about them. A bow though, I can use but my old one was looted with the rest of the weapons from camp." I take a bite out of my bagel and close my eyes as the flavors spread over my tongue and I nearly moan from just how good it was. My sweet tooth very thoroughly happy right now. Holding the bagel in my mouth I use my hands to go ahead and load up another but with a different kind of jam with the cream cheese. Setting it down before me I glance at you. I take the bagel out of my mouth and lick at my lips before I speak again. "It's got a bit more life left in it..." I state. I take another bite and swallow it down before continuing. "Though honestly probably not much." I glance your way with a sheepish look on my face. "I suppose while we are out I will keep my eyes open for one. If I could find a metal one that would be ideal, but a crowbar works just about the same." The conversation stayed much the same throughout breakfast, and to my surprise I'd been offered training at a later date on how to properly shoot a gun. After both bagels and a healthy glass of fresh juice Bandit and I were ready to head out for the scavenging hunt. I was a bit hesitant, while I was use to working in groups we were both unfamiliar with each other and I couldn't help but wonder if I would truly be a help or a hinder and those thoughts only continued to swirl in my mind as we headed through the boobytrapped path towards the city. We walked quiet for awhile, the only sounds were of the nature around us or me having to call Bandit back before he strayed too far. Eventually though I tried to strike up a conversation in hopes to understand my new companion better. "So... What's the weirdest thing you've ever found while on a scavenge?" @LoneWaffle
