He walked through the doors of his job like he has dozens of times before. Oversized photos of lingerie models plastered on every wall. He didn’t know when he was desensitized to it all but knew it was at least some time ago. Was it the choice of decor or the models that come in every now and again to familiarize the team with the product. It could always be the fact he was one of three men in the entire building and the only one that wasn’t involved with IT. Either way it was just another day at work. Waving hello to Rachel. Giving a polite smile to Jackie. Then the best part of his day; seeing Amelia. They’d started around the same time and like any person with common sense wondered if he was gay or a creep. Fortunately it never took anyone long to realize he was just here to do his job. He liked what he saw like any man with a pulse would, just never made a big deal about it all. But there was always something about Amelia. Everything about her drew him to her. And it’s not like he went through any efforts to hide it. At least no less effort than would send him to HR for breaking the “no dating policyl”. But still, he wanted to at least try for somethings. He walked up to her and stopped just short of what may be interpreted as “inappropriate”. He looked her deep in the eye and gave the soft smile he’d perfected long ago and just said, “Good morning Amelia.” @Deleted User

"Here's that grande vanilla latte, Miss Jackie." Amelia places the hot cup with a cardboard holder on the desk in front of her supervisor. She was working on becoming one of the company's next designers, and if that was what she wanted, she knew she would have to play assistant to Jackie. Jackie was a middle aged woman, stern, but she had her moments of kindness. Amelia thought, that if she could run errands for her, she would be allowed to submit her best work from her portfolio that she has worked on since college. The company only sought out new designers once a year, at the beginning of fall. Right now, Amelia was just an order assistant who called and emailed supply chains all day. One day, she thought, maybe one day she would get that promotion and see her work on these walls. She hears the friendly voice of her coworker, Jaylyn. "Good morning!" She replies, and rolls up the sleeves of her white button up to her elbows. She eyes him, smiles, and then looks back at the carrier she had in her hands. "I didn't know your order, but I grabbed you a coffee just in case you didn't have time to stop for one this morning."

He’d been taken aback by her kindness. Always thinking of others she was. “I’ve no doubt it’ll be perfect.” He winked in hopes she noticed. A coffee drinker he was not but he wasn’t going ruin this rare chance with her like that. “So what do you think the big meeting is about? They don’t usually call in both the marketing and the order team together. And who knows maybe if you’re lucky they’ll be looking for a new designer.” These meetings were few and far between and he knew how much this dream meant to Amelia. He wanted this for her almost as much as she did. @Deleted User

“Carry on, you two.” Jackie states and looks at them with furrowed brows. Amelia immediately stops leaning against the desk and begins to walk away with her coworker, down the hall. Each hallway had different offices for different departments. “Hopefully it’s not to fire anyone, I don’t think that we can afford to lose any more people.” Amelia was nervous, as her position of just ordering products was becoming more automated by a computer system and she feared that they would one day no longer have a need for her help, because why would they have a person do it when the computer can do it alone? She finally gets to her office, which was three down and to the left. She sets her pink tote bag purse on the coat hanger on her wall and glances at her mostly surviving succulent plants lined up on the window. Scattered across her desk was her laptop, and multiple journals full of her drawings and other random written passages. Note to self, start bringing those journals home so no one steals them. Not that anyone would, she hopes. @Xoxo, Marcus

“Even if they were going to fire anyone, which I doubt, you’d be the last person they’d let go. You’re too valuable to the company. Everyone knows how often you stay late and pick up extra work in other departments.” He remembered the times when she’d helped him meet his own deadlines. “You’re great at what you do. And no one can do it as well as you do. Keep that in mind, we‘ll talk later.” He stepped out of her office and walked down to his own. Noticing a new picture of a lingerie outside his door with a striking resemblance to Amelia. Great as if it wasn’t hard enough to talk to her. He shook of his very explicit thoughts and opened his laptop. How to get people to buy more lingerie was something he’d been more than familiar with. And he thought he had an idea that was worth approaching in the next meeting if the chance was given. @Deleted User

Amelia sighed quietly as she listened to him talking. Every time she picked up that extra work and stayed late, the more she felt as though she were at a dead-end job. She just smiled and nodded, “Thank you. I’ll definitely be around if you want to talk later.” She closes the door behind him after he leaves, and sits down to open her notebook. The cover was plum purple leather and everything she wrote was in ink. She had sketches of designs, and she had the ideas to work with softer color and fabrics than some of the other artists in the building. For a brief moment, she kept thinking about her coworker. Why was he so nice to her? Was there a reason he lingered? She shook those thoughts away. There was a loud knock on her door. Amelia stands up, closes the book and drops it on her desk before answering it. Behind the open door was one of the other managers, Layla. “Meet in room 3A for our meeting, in 5 minutes please.” @Xoxo, Marcus

Jaylyn checked his watch. It’s about that time. He headed down to 3A and everyone that he’d ever met in the company. I guess this was a big deal after all, he thought. Everyone murdered to the person next them as he felt a bump to his left. “Nice of you to join us princess.”, he joked to Amelia. Quickly pushing aside the mental images of her in the lingerie that’s now outside of his office. In that moment the loud clicking of heels filled the room that only CEO could carry. Steph held a room together tighter than any knot and that’s probably why she got promoted so quickly. She dug into her usual echoing about how she was thankful we could join her and blah blah blah. He’d heard it dozens of times before. He just wanted to know why exactly they were here. And his wish was granted. “Now for the reason you’re all here. Angel’s Kiss is looking for new ideas and new directions. Now I don’t want to limit these ideas to any one person or group so I wanted to hear any ideas that you all had. And just like that his chance had come. “Ma’am, I actually had an idea that I’d been wanting to bring to your attention.” Dozens of eyes fell on him. All women and this was not something he was used to but he continued. “For the past few years our marketing as been towards the sensuality and femininity of the lingerie. Let’s flip it on it’s head. Instead of marketing it as “for special occasions for him” let’s go for the empowerment of women. Make the moment about them and how sexy and powerful they look in it. As a matter of fact, Amelia has sketches that fit exactly what I have in mind.” He didn’t mean to talk so much and the stunned silence in the room echoed that, but he hoped that this was a Hail Mary that turned out well. @Deleted User

Princess? Amelia thought to herself, but otherwise decided it was probably just a joke. So she played it off and pretended like she didn’t care. “Yeah, of course I would be here. Why wouldn’t I?” She asked and sat down in the chair. They all had wheels on the bottom. There was quiet chatter among some of the crowd, but it quickly ceased once there was talk from the manager. For some extra cash to her checks, Amelia had begun modeling for the company over the last couple weeks. She was sort of insecure about it but at least it paid her well. Amelia’s cheeks flushed and she felt as if her heart and stomach dropped when the room went silent. All of the eyes were now on her. “I- Um, yeah. I do have some sketches. They’re in my office.” she stated, quietly but the high ceilings carried an echo. The manager nods, so she continues to talk about it. Someone was whispering to the person sitting next to them and Amelia couldn’t help but feel embarrassed. “So, um, like Jaylyn was saying, I think it’s a great idea to promote a new campaign that the base idea is women’s confidence and empowerment. We want her, the consumer, to feel good in her own skin. Think wireless, comfortable, softer fabrics and less harsh designs. Maybe even some loungewear. Maybe some neutrals. Sleek yet still sexy.” Amelia swallows. Hopefully this wasn’t a terrible idea. Most of the product sold was strappy, lace-covered and featured push-up designs in the bras. Bold colors and patterns like leopard, or flaming reds. Of course Amelia purchased from this line but it was time to think of something new for a change. @Xoxo, Marcus

He never said a word to her about his idea but she knew exactly what he had in mind. Change how we look at sex. It doesn’t need to be a grand statement. But it can be a powerful one. The look on everyone in the room’s face was a mixture of confusion, impressed, and intrigued. If he was going to be the only male representative, he may as well try and use his perspective to help his company. At the end of the day Steph was the only one they had to convince. She closed her eyes, taking in what they had to say. “Alright. I’ll give you a month. Two weeks to make the designs, to get them made into reality. If we like what you do, we’ll talk about turning into a permanent line and potential raises for you both. Meeting adjourned.” @Deleted User

Amelia felt a wave of relief. She didn’t like all of the room’s attention being on her. A month, she thought. A month to make this happen. That’s enough time, right? Everyone at the meeting gathers their belongings and departs, leaving the room pretty much empty. Amelia stands up and without a word makes her way back to her office on the opposite side of the building. She closes her door and sits on her chair, immediately reaching for a pen and clicks it open just to stare blankly at the paper in front of her. How were they going to make this work? @Xoxo, Marcus

He couldn’t wait to get back to his office. This was his chance to make a move in his career. A potential raise and promotion would be amazing. He grabbed his bag and his laptop and froze in the door. That model looking back at him and he could feel himself getting red. Walking back to Amelia’s office he could wait to share in her excitement. He was going to be able to help her live her dream. Maybe score a few brownie points on the way. He knocked on her door and could see the look her face. She’s overwhelmed and it’s probably more than likely his fault. “Hey Amelia, I was thinking after we head leave, we could maybe grab dinner. Talk about the project? I did draft you into to this so it’s my treat of course.” He hoped that maybe her realizing that he had he back would make her life easier. Maybe, @Deleted User

Amelia let out a sigh, someone was knocking on her door already? Her social battery felt to be drained down to zero. She stands up once again, tucking her pen into the top paper of her journal. “Hi Jaylyn. Dinner? You mean tonight?” She replies, and when he nods she bites her upper lip. “Yeah, I suppose that would be okay- I don’t have anything else going on.” That was a lie. She wanted nothing more than to curl up in a hoodie and plush blanket, sit by her TV and watch a rom-com with a cold glass of sangria. “You tell me when and where, mister, and I’ll meet you there.” Amelia smiles and tries to hide her introvert-ness to not come off as rude. Sometimes, after a long work week, she just felt like she didn’t have it in her to be more social. But this project seemed pretty important so it wasn’t something she wanted to put off exactly. Especially when the two only had a month. @Xoxo, Marcus

He was elated upon her acceptance. Knowing maybe he could take this first step. And more importantly maybe she just needed to have some fun. “Tell you what meet me at Jake’s Diner at 7. It’s a Friday but I’ll call him ahead. He owes me a favor so I’ll see if we can get something quiet.” This project felt like the beginning of something new, something special. He was determined to get everything out of it that he could. @Deleted User

Amelia nods at the request. “I’ll be there,” she answers and checks the time on her laptop screen. 4:51. It was just about time to wrap up for the day and leave, which was perfect. After Jaylyn leaves the room, Amelia grabs her tote bag and shoves as much of her paperwork and notebooks as she can inside and fishes through the side pocket for her car keys. Upon arriving at home, she unlocks the door to her apartment and is greeted by her fluffy-tailed dog. Her dog follows to the bedroom where she pulls open the creaky wooden closet door, beginning to rummage through it all to find something nice to wear. Amelia settled on a pair of black heels, a forest green dress that went to just above her knees, and she leaves her hair as it was the same back at the office. Her heart began pounding and she chalked it up to stressing about impressing her bosses with her project work. Upon arriving at the diner, she steps out of her car and makes her way to the front door. @Xoxo, Marcus

He left her office in a hurry. Did he just ask her out a date? Did she think this was a date? Either way he’d figured a step in a direction was better than being stagnant. He grabbed his laptop and charger and did his best to ignore the large poster that will be haunting him for the foreseeable future. Anyone who cared to check would know that his efforts were in vain. He rushed home to change. Out of his khakis and button down shirt. Into a crimson v neck, black jeans and shoes. His tigers eye pendant for the finishing touch. Got to make a good second, first impression, right? Once arriving at the diner, he realized he’d beaten Amelia there, moments later she’d followed him in. She was breathtaking. That green dress looked like it was made for her. For just a second, it felt like she was the only person in the room. Lost in this moment that surely lasted only a second but felt like hours, he only snapped out of it upon hearing his name. Snapping back into the real world, he gave her a hug and they followed the hostess to their table. Away from all the other patrons just like he’d ask. Feeling as if he definitely owed Pete a favor for this. @Deleted User

Amelia smiled at the sight of her friendly coworker, Jaylyn. She had put some thought into this before, but she definitely picked up on the fact that it appeared that he had made an effort to look good on this very night. Was that just a coincidence? She runs her fingers through her auburn hair and takes a couple steps toward him, and feels the imminent grasp of the hug. Her cheeks prickle with heat and undoubtedly turn a warm shade of pink. The two had never hugged before. Amelia, damn it, let go before you make this awkward! She hugged him back lightly and steps away, now focusing her attention onto the hostess. “Table for two?” The hostess asks cheerfully and picks up two large laminated menus from a shelf and leads them to a table towards the back, isolated from the bumbling noises of the family-filled tables toward the front. Amelia takes a seat on the comfy leather booth seat and picks up the menu. “I’d just like a water to start, please.” Amelia replies to the hostess after she had asked them for their drink of choice. Since she wasn’t sure if this were a date, she didn’t want to go for wine or anything right away. @Xoxo, Marcus

“I’ll take a sprite. Can we also get two glasses of Chardonnay? We’re celebrating some great news.” The hostess smiled as she took down their drink orders and walked away. “If you don’t want to drink, I’ll be fine to. But at the least I’d like to make a toast for our new fortune.” He couldn’t look away from her. She was gorgeous in every way. But he couldn’t spend all night just staring at her could he? He looked at the menu as if he didn’t already know what he wanted. “So you’re future designer, don’t say otherwise we both know it, have the cutest dog in the world. Tell me more about the soon to be famous Amelia Gray. This was as good a chance has he’d ever have to know what makes this woman tick and he was going to do whatever possible to learn everything. @Deleted User

Chardonnay.. that was certainly a lot fancier than the water she just ordered. Amelia just smiled and nodded in agreement, she didn’t want to turn down the idea to seem rude. “That’s quite alright, I’ll have a drink. Thank you for ordering that.” She listened to what he had to say, and laughed a bit. “Certainly, there’s no way I’m going to become famous. I think we can pull this off, but I wouldn’t want to step too far ahead.” Amelia takes a sip of the wine once it is brought to the table and poured into her glass. She thanks the water and places her order, a pasta dish with chicken. “Well, I enjoy writing, reading, spending time comfortably at home,” she began, and popped open the straw wrapper to drink that in her water glass. “Why don’t you tell me a bit more about yourself, mister mysterious?” @Xoxo, Marcus

He rolled his eyes at her moments. Of course she could be famous, that is if she wanted to. There’s probably only five people that know the company better than she had. He felt simple in his ordering a burger and fries, but it fit his mood. “Mister Mysterious? That’s a bit much I think. I just like simple. If things get too complicated it’s just too much for me. I like looking out at the stars, enjoying a good concert, music, poetry. I just want to enjoy life as much as possible. I mean, we only have so much time in this world. Why not do the things we love with the people we love….” His voice trailed off as he looked deep into Amelia’s eyes. @Deleted User

Amelia just shrugged at his comment about the nickname she had given for him, “You know, the reason that I called you that is because we’ve been working together for so long- and don’t get me wrong, you’re very polite- but we hadn’t really dove into deeper conversation until recently.” The waitress returns with their steaming dishes, and everything looked wonderful. Amelia thanks her and continues to listen to Jaylyn, making eye contact but that was sort of overwhelming to her. “I like that. The simplicity, I mean. It’s rare to come by someone genuine these days that isn’t materialistic.” Amelia takes another sip from the ice cold glass of wine in front of her. Unlike her sister and mother. ‘Marry rich’, her mother would always say. ‘Get a master’s degree!’ In her eyes, working your life away and not truly enjoying it wasn’t something that she wanted for herself. Of course, having a job was important, but her identity was so much more than just an everyday 9-5. She wanted more. He was right, time is limited and there’s nothing you can do about it. “So tell me, Jaylyn, what sparked your sudden interest on this project?” @Xoxo, Marcus

He laughed to himself. It wasn’t through lack of trying. He took every effort possible to try and talk to the woman. Nerves just got the best of him sometimes. “Well you know. Working in different departments kind of makes things a bit difficult. Different meeting times and all that. Besides it can be kind of hard to get some time with you with all the charity work you do for the office.” His admiration for her filling his voice. She was something special to him and he didn’t know how long he could hold it in. He took a sip of his wine. Half of out nervousness, half out of fear that he’d been talking too much. His self consciousness not something he ever felt able to push aside. He took her words carefully. Thankful that she didn’t think he was being pretentious. “Well I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being materialistic either. I mean we all just wanna live our best comfortable lives. We all just live that a bit differently sometimes.” A sentence that rang a bit too true for him. He never really felt like he fit in places that he should. As if no matter where he went, he’d always be an outsider. Maybe that’s why he applied to work at a lingerie company. If he’s going to be an outsider, he may as well decide that for others. I don’t know what sparked my interest in this project, maybe it’s because I’m madly in love with you? “Well, I guess it’s a few things. One is that looking at all the posters in the building, I feel like it’s all the same. The same type of model, the same type of lingerie. It’s all so…..repetitive. And our marketing towards our demographics is so archaic. It’s like we never left the 60’s. But most importantly, I….I saw an opportunity to help you with your dream and I wanted to say I helped get you there.” He smiled softly at her, his hand outstretched to her side of the table. @Deleted User

Amelia bit her bottom lip, and thought again about what he said. He did provide a good point in the fact that most of what the company provided was repetitive. She was looking to move them forward and make some kind of change, but deep down she didn’t know if she were capable of making such a big difference. Amelia thought of herself as an outsider that just did everyone’s slack work for them. Is this why everyone always asks her for favors? She glanced at his hand outstretching and pondered if this meant he wanted to hold her hand over the top of the table. She kept them down in her lap out of being nervous. “I appreciate it, Jaylyn. I really do. But, what about your dreams too? Tell me about it. I’d like to know what yours is.” Amelia shifted the focus of the conversation away from herself. Her purse had some of the journals with her lingerie sketches inside and was stuffed with assorted pens and colored pencils. She never seemed to catch a break and leave her work behind even when she wasn’t in that building. For a little bit she wanted a break. “Well, if you want to see.. I do have some pictures here of the visions I had. That is only if you’d like to talk about it.” A waitress walks past and drops another basket of fresh soft bread on their table and didn’t really say anything, just quickly shuffling away to attend to the next table. @Xoxo, Marcus

Jaylyn: He looked at her in complete admiration of her mind and beauty. When he noticed her biting her lip, it was was if he lost a minute in time. Nor did he care that she didn't take his hand. She was beautiful and perfect in a way that he didn't even feel capable of expressing. Jaylyn took in her words. Appreciative and surprised that someone asked for his opinions and dreams. Since they began working at the company, he became used to being ignored if not spoken to with partial apathy. Only a few of their coworkers treated him like a person with respect; Amelia more than any. "Well, I guess I just want to leave my mark. For something that I've been involved with to stand the test of time and mean something. Even if it's nothing as grandiose as designing a building for the New York skyline, I want to be remembered, even if not by name." He felt a bit self conscious as the words left his lips. He'd never been so open with his dreams and ideals before, but he always felt different with Amelia. Safe. Comfortable. She just brought things out of him that even he wasn't entirely aware of. He beamed at her words. The happiness brought on by the chance to see her work again was like nothing else. He knew how passionate she was about the industry and was happy that he could help her achieve her dream. He didn't even notice the waitress or the bread she was dropping off. All he knew was that he couldn't have agreed more to see what she'd been working on. @Deleted User (edited)
