The knock at the door barely registered before it opened, her familiar steps echoing in the room.
“Pondering life again, Sir?” V’s voice carried a teasing edge as she approached, uniform crisp as ever.
I didn’t look at her. “Something like that. Not much else to do when you’re this… protected.”
Her footsteps stopped just behind me, close enough to remind me she was always there, whether I liked it or not.
“You must curse your luck, V,” I muttered, glancing over my shoulder with a faint smirk. “The king’s best knight, reduced to babysitting me. Was this the grand destiny you dreamed of?”
I leaned back against the railing, watching her for a reaction I knew she wouldn’t give. She never cracked. Not for me, anyway.
